Ashton - a few truths 19:07 - Apr 2 with 5562 viewsSouperJim

He's objectively and demonstrably an excellent chairman. He's overseen the most rapid period of growth in the history of the club. Our success throughout the gamechanger era to date is as much down to him as it is McKenna, arguably more so.

Some folk on here have doubted him and disliked him from the start. I've seen endless references to his Brent-esque communication style over the last 5 years, references to his performance at Bristol City etc.

Yes, he's clearly dropped a stinker with this Farage business and doubled down on it by being economic with the truth. But I would suggest the strength of feeling on here about this sorry episode are not representative of the wider fanbase. One or two of you have just been waiting for the opportunity to get your knives out.

Anybody encouraging protests and chanting is an absolute numptard in my book. In the words of bignose, be on the inside piddling out, not on the outside piddling in. If the amount of energy being expended on this negativity instead went on getting behind the team, we might actually find ourselves promoted come the end of the season.

I said **major** signings. Ie ones carrying a significant transfer fee. Most of them are not in the first team either because they're benched or banished on loan. Either way they've not been good enough. That's mostly on Ashton.

Let's say > ~5m

Egeli,
McAteer,
Greaves,
Muric,
Ogbene
Szmodics

That's over 70m worth.
[Post edited 3 Apr 17:05]

Egeli is 19 and has huge potential

McAteer features regularly

Greaves features regularly and can point to Kipre's good form as a reason he hasn't played as much. Also rarely lets us down as LB cover.

Muric was unfortunate. A few errors and the fans gave up on him. Likely to recoup most of the fee for him.

Ogbene was a bit of a stange one

Szmodics was for non footballing reasons. I doubt you were disappointed with that signing at the time.

So £70m on paper.

He is objectively and demonstrably a very good CEO. I think this whole episode shows clearly he is not to be trusted as a chairman one bit. Mike O'Leary was objectively and demonstrably an excellent chairman. Whilst O'Leary presided over Ashton we had success.

I never doubted Ashton and took no notice of those Bristol City fans. I apologise to them. I was wrong. I actually admire them all the more for not having come on here saying "we did warn you!" Even with recognising his success, you cannot ignore he is the master of soundbites which is where the Brent analogy comes from.

Not only has he dropped a stinker, he has acted in complete opposition to the values and integrity that the club has built its recent success around. He has made his position untenable. I have been 100% supportive of him and the whole direction of the club until he did this. I have never felt so bad about my club. But the club is far bigger than an individual. I have gone from 100% support to 100% he absolutely must go in a few days.

I get why people would protest. I won't be. If the club continue to fail to take appropriate action I probably will. I am very disappointed it is taking so long for the club to act. We need a chairman. We need to remove and replace Ashton. Those all need to happen with as much haste as is possible. He has become a stain on our club.

Great post NSB.

Ashton - a few truths on 11:05 - Apr 3 by Leaky

Who appointed Kieron?

He did. Also paid him more than the best managers in Europe, that hasn’t aged well.., great appointment in context though.

The problem though, is levels!

Lincoln City, they currently have a better points per game record than us in league one, do you think their manager, CEO, players are world class??

Day they worked a miracle, promotion next season too - would that make them all elite and world class, worth spending £220 million on new players, worth paying their coach a salary to rival the best in the premier league?

Or does football just have levels - there’s a reason 95% of our players, managers, chairmen etc never got a chance for success at that level - they were always too good to be at that level.

The right people, at the right time, doesn’t equal elite and world class though, and the investment has been world class, that’s the challenge we face - they just don’t warrant that status.

Or maybe Lincoln are world class. There’s a thought (that was a really poor Plymouth side too, time has already proven that).., we got carried away with relative success.

I think McKenna will be far more succesful when he had someone much better than Ashton above him, and can build a structure to mitigate his obvious weaknesses.

I don’t think that’s with us, unless Mark leaves - as a due, nothing to do with recent events, they simply don’t work at the elite level, we know that now.

I'm trying to wrap my head around what people are actually upset about, to the degree that they would call for Ashton's head. It just seems disproportionate to me. You have no issue with Farage's visit or anything the club did, you are solely put out by the explanation and subsequent apology?

He lied, and he didn't say sorry for it. That's my problem wiith it.

Nothing to do with R=Farage as a person or his party - though I loath the both. It;s just that he and the club lied and lied and lied - and haven;t admitted it. THAT is what makes me so, so, so disappointed.

As we've been told from several sources that the team are just as angry at Ashton as many of us fans are, "suggesting the team would be encouraged by negative, angry chanting against Ashton" is no more than logical, and it's yourself who's being "fairly ridiculous" in denying it.

Look at the down and upvotes for this thread - about 20 for each. Which just illustrates what a divisive subject it is. But one thing surely everyone can agree on is the most important thing about a football club is the football. Come match day we all want the same thing - an Ipswich win. And I am sure everyone can agree that any negative chanting can only have a detriment effect on the team/result.

And this also shows what a monumental screw up Ashton is responsible for.

For those of you that don't have a problem and want to just move on... Does it not make you pause that such a large number of fans are still unhappy? You can berate and blame us for still being angry about what has happened, but that frustration is misplaced. It should be at Ashton for creating this situation out of nothing in the first place.

The fans are divided (sowing division is exactly what Farage does best). The common ground is that everyone seems keen to make a good atmosphere during the match on Monday - great. But for those of us that are unhappy that Ashton is still in a job, we're not going to just shut up and meekly let him forget this when the final whistle goes.

It's also ironic that so many of our fans have spent the season moaning after every small set back. This season has been toxic well before Ashton made it worse. There's actually something to be legitimately unhappy about now, and we're now being told to suck it up. I've spent all season trying to be positive, despite frustration at times, and during games I will be 100% behind the players and supporting them as I do every match I go to. But I'm not going to pretend that I'm appalled at the arrogant distain Ashton has showed the local press and therefore the fans by lying and trying to cover up his idiotic actions, giving a nothing 'apology' and then going missing. It's rubbish that Kieran was the one who had to answer the questions at the press conference yesterday. Of course he was classy and dealt with it well. But where was Ashton? This is his mess. Makes a mockery of 'running from adversity'.

"utterly clueless crap"

Sad that you regard players' and others' views in such a disrespectful way just because they hold a different opininion to your own.

Major signings are intended to be first-choice. None of those players are. We won't miss Ashton.

I hold your view that chanting Ashton out would encourage the players in a disrespectful way because it's some of the most utterly absurd moronic crap I've ever read on TWTD. I obviously missed the press conference where you were unveiled as spokesperson for the players, was it going on at the same time as the one where McKenna said he hoped the supporters would get right behind the team?

And with that abuse + wilful refusal to even look at (and/or denial of) the facts, evidence & logic stemming from two well-respected, fact-checked, lawyered-up newspapers, + info from those actually behind the scenes at PR, you've lost the argument.

I'm out, it's as pointless debating this with you as it is with someone who still claims that the earth is flat.

Another numptard just looking to "win" an arguement, complete with declaring yourself the winner as you flounce off into the sunset because not everyone shares your opinion.

I look forward to all the roars of "Ashton out" spurring the team to victory on Monday. I don't know why we didn't just take up vocally vilifying our chairman years ago, we could be champions league by now.

Do people expect the Club ( Gamechanger) to actually act re Ashton now? I ask because so much time has now elapsed and other than Ashtons non apology, if any action was to happen, I think it would have done so by now, surely?

I hope you never make a serious error

Who hasn’t invited a quasi fascist round for lunch, lied to everyone that it wasn’t an official visit, then had to apologise when it turned out everyone knew he was lying?

Common error- and anyway, it was just the one quasi fascist and Marl is unreservedly sorry and is hurting too.
