We're not that small, we're about the tenth biggest country in Europe by area but above us are the Scandi countries that have large areas that are not really habitable and have far smaller populations as a result. Only really France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Poland are major central European countries that are bigger than us. France, Italy, Germany, and Spain all take more asylum applications than us. By population size, we rank around 16th or 17th in Europe for the number of asylum seekers we take so the idea we're somehow shouldering more of the burden than everyone else is just factually incorrect.

It depends which country you are talking about but, presuming you are taking the four nations of the United Kingdom as a whole, we rank eleventh in Europe by land area after Russia, Ukraine, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Finland, Poland and Italy...in that order of magnitude. There are thirty nine smaller nations plus a few micro states. This stuff is really easy to look up, you know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

No. They need an ETA. Not sure what your point is. They still can't "buy a one way ticket for the said £100". Well they could. But as stated before, they will not be getting past check-in and, most likely, will be detained at the airport. Question. Are you being willfully ignorant? I would have thought a better way to "stop the boats" would be to set up a processing center in mainland Europe where they can claim asylum. Will it stop all of them? Of course not, it may make a dent though. But the argument "You can only apply for asylum when entering the country" followed by "There are no legal ways that you can enter the country" has, I would suggest, only one real outcome. We are looking at it. [Post edited 9 Apr 16:57]

| Great result. Ashton out! (n/t) on 10:02 - Apr 7 by ITFCson | I wouldn’t say happy. It was naive on his part and I wish he didn’t do it. But it didn’t offend me personally and regardless he’s apologized. I’d much rather now fully focus on the football. Writing Ashton out isn’t going to make any difference to if he actually goes or not, however it may help the divide and negativity linger so it seems counter productive to come and write the same thing after every game. |
Only just catching up on this thread and so won't get into reading and replying to everything but will to this comment. How was it naive? Do you really think Ashton is that incompetent he didn't realise what he was doing? He invited the leader of Reform and his media team into the club and allowed him to take footage and use it. He also gifted him promotional shirts with a political message on them. What has Ashton actually said sorry for? He hasn't apologised for anything. That is why he should go. Maybe it won't achieve anything but I won't keep silent until he is gone. Someone said that will be another 5 years or more. If that's what it is, I will be posting it another couple of hundred times but I hope he is gone sooner than that. The division and negativity is on Ashton. He caused it. He can solve it by going. I still find these things are dismissed but never explained. "Stop being a plonker, the club has not endorsed racism." I then post a clear explanation of how the club, through its CEO/Chairman, has done exactly that and silence. I will not ignore this issue because, to me, it matters. Ashton out!

Aye, it matters to a lot of people, but the “tWeLvE W0kE UsERS on TWtD” lot have won this and we just have to accept it, or divorce ourselves from our football club until Ashton is gone. It’s an issue that transcends beyond Ipswich Town, but lying is normalised, the passive acceptance of quasi fascist values and rhetoric is normalised and there are men out here talking about complex issues with their whole chest, with almost zero understanding of the facts of the matter or any inclination to seek knowledge. F*** those people, f*** Mark Ashton, f*** Nigel Farage and f*** the techno-feudalists for leading us to this point. Anyway, it was only the one quasi fascist that Mark invited to lunch and he only lied about it until he was caught out and he’s unreservedly sorry and is hurting.

I hate to side with MrTown, but as I said earlier in the thread, I don't think allowing Farage to use the club to promote his party explicitly means the club endorses racism. Yes Farage is a racist. In terms of "It has promoted Farage" - no, not really. Farage promoted Farage, the club just allowed it. A stupid, stupid error of judgement, but that in itself doesn't mean the club endorses racism or any of Farage's foul views. By your logic the club now endorses every one of Farage's views. So for example it hates Albanians? And yet we employ an Albanian and pay him vast sums of money. I get your anger. I'm angry too. But I don't think it's necessary to exaggerate to this degree to make the point that the club made a very bad mistake (and then compounded it by trying to cover it up). If Ipswich Town Football Club genuinely endorsed racism then I wouldn't step foot in it again.

Is gifting him six shirts with Farage 10 on the back - clearly a reference to him becoming PM - not an endorsement? Is allowing him to display those shirts in our dressing room and holding one up by the pitch and allowing those pictures to be used to promote him and his party not an endorsement? You can say you don't think it is but you'll need to show your workings.

I explained my view on whether ITFC endorses racism to Nthsuffolkblue as he said "I still find these things are dismissed but never explained." Again, specifically about racism. As to your question, no, I don't think those shirts necessarily endorse Farage as PM. For starters, it's clearly a bit of a joke. Allowing "Farage 10" on a shirt doesn't automatically say we want Farage as Prime Minister. Then you actually have to ask how it actually played out. There's a world of difference between the club saying "We want farage as PM, give him 6 "Farage 10" shirts so he can highlight this on social media" to Farage and his team being where the shirts are printed and asking the spotty teen assistant to put Farage 10 on them. Again, it's a mistake. But it's a business gift. Businesses gift things all the time, to all sorts of people, usually to curry favour or appease in some way. I don't think any kind of gift is an endorsement of Farage as PM or an endorsement of racism. [Post edited 10 Apr 9:39]

The club allowed full access of our stadium to Farage and his media team. We also presented him with 6 "Farage 10" shirts and allowed him and his media team to use those shirts in promotional shots in the dressing room and on the pitch, which were used on a political website and social media.

Have to agree to disagree on this one. Welcoming Farage to the club, gifting him shirts with Farage 10 on the back, allowing him to deck out our changing room in said shirts as a photo op, allowing him to pose with said shirt like a new signing, then allowing those materials to be used to promote Farage and Reform. For me it takes a fair bit of mental gymnastics or a healthy dose of cognitive dissonance to explain that away as not endorsing him. Not necessarily endorsing him to be next PM, but certainly endorsing Farage.

You asked me to show my workings and I have. Not a huge surprise you were going to disagree with them. But there are no mental gymnastics there, it's all perfectly logically laid out. I think the mental gymnastics are from those saying this episode means the club endorses racism. In fact I think it's batshit mental to suggest the club endorses racism.

The club's actions that day, seemingly under the direction of Ashton, amounted to an endorsement of the political ambitions of a known racist. That's an act endorsing racism. An ongoing failure to denounce that act makes it a continuing endorsement. Ergo, the club endorses racism.

No, I disagree. As I said above, by that logic the club presumably also hates Albanians? If the club hosting Farage means they endorse racism, then they must agree with everything he's ever said or done. You can't just pick and choose a view they are therefore endorsing above all others. So the club now hates Albanians as well, despite employing one and paying him a huge wage?
