| Walle Egeli on 15:55 - Apr 20 by Herbivore | This thread is symptomatic of how f***ed modern outlooks and culture have become. If something or someone isn't an instant success then they're a failure. If we lose a game we're terrible, even if we've been on a good run before then. People demand perfection, they demand instant gratification, and when they don't get it the toys end up all over the floor. Walle Egeli is 19, FFS. He won't be hitting his peak for another 7 or 8 years still. He's had a tough first season but one in which he's still chipped in with 6 goal involvements at a rate of one every 246 minutes played. That's not bad for a wide right player in our system. As a comparison, Wes made a goal contribution every 240 minutes in our last promotion season. Wes was 29 and playing the best football of his career, Walle Egeli is 19 and adapting to a new country and playing at a higher level than he's ever played at before. |
I don't disagree. I think the issue though is he has signed for £18m for a Championship football team and broke the transfer record for the division. It's the sort of deal Brighton would do, he gets loaned out for a season or two and nobody bats an eyelid. But he has come in here and at this level and this price you sort of need/want an instant impact. Or you at least hope you get a season like Omari had whereby he builds his way into it and ends the season being one of the best players in the league. I think he obviously has a lot of talent and could well be a good long term buy for us but it's not been a good use of resources for us in the here and now in a position that we've been lacking in this season.

| Walle Egeli on 15:07 - Apr 20 by SomethingBlue | A good comparison would be with Andreas Schjelderup of Benfica – came from same club at same age, similar fee, similar position on pitch, took him a couple of years to do anything and now he's having a cracking season in Portugal & winning man of the match against Real Madrid. It takes time. Sindre will be fine. |
That's not the point. I think Walle may well make a player. However, spunking £18m on a store player was a ridiculous decision for a Championship club. Of course, if Akpom hadn't turned out to be such a dud & we were cruising to automatic promotion, there wouldn't be so much criticism. But he is NOT a right winger. All the opponents have worked out that he won't beat his man on the outside & he looks to cut in & get the ball on his favoured left foot.

But we had the luxury with Omari of being able to build him up over the season because Burns and Chaplin were playing well and that allowed us to give Omari minutes from the bench and occasional starts. Because Burns has been injured and until recently McAteer has been badly out of form, Walle Egeli got thrown into the team very well and played more minutes than would be ideal when looking to build up a young player. If McAteer had been playing in October the way he's playing now, Walle Egeli could have dipped in and out a bit more which probably would have been better for his development. I agree it's an odd signing in some ways as Championship sides don't usually spend that kind of money on long term prospects. That's not his fault though. And we can't go back in time, we've signed him and he's still a top prospect. 19 years old and 6 goal involvements despite not fully hitting the heights is not a bad effort and he'll be a lot better for his exposure to the Championship this season.

| Walle Egeli on 20:15 - Apr 19 by jas0999 | I really like him. But looks like an expensive punt, which hasn’t worked in a season where promotion is the only acceptable outcome |
My view on that is KM is looking for players who will be good enough for the Premier League and Walle Egeli has that potential. Of course, we have to get there and stay there for him to realise that potential with us.

| Walle Egeli on 20:34 - Apr 19 by NthQldITFC | I'd have been bringing him on in the central 10 position, or even as the 9 after Azon had worked them for 70 minutes today. Needs to be somewhere where his touch can get him a yard of space in either direction, then push off and run with the ball. At the moment he just gets stuck against the line, receives it, waits for a marker to close him then loses it. He needs the extra degree of freedom that playing in the middle would give him, that's the only way we'll get much out of him this season now. |
When we were 2.0 down play him in middle or upfront as he does at u21 -?? Akpom? Mehmeti has gone backwards JP isn’t up to speed

It's more symptomatic of the club breaking the championship transfer record for him, if you ask me. Had he been a 3 or 4m punt I think everyone would generally be satisfied.

Sure, but you don't generally get 19 year old prospects rated as highly as him for £3m unfortunately.

It wasn't a jibe, we're all lay people compared to McKenna, his staff and the staff of the various other clubs who were after Walle Egeli.
