I am against the monarchy. I object that these people are supposed to be better than me due to marriage or an accident of birth. The only problem is that I don't know what you could have instead, as picking an Irish style President would never be agreed upon.

But that said, if Charles was to tell Trump a few home truths, I would buy every commerativ commemorative plate going.

Better than you? In what way does being king mean they are better than you?

When did you last get several palaces or a golden carriage to ride in? The British state tells you that he's better than you.

There are a lot of legacy issues with the monarchy, it's true and it can make us look somewhat Ruritanian on the World stage. However, the King. like our Member of Parliament or Member of the Scottish Parliament, is there to represent us but unlike our MP or MSP they will not be voted out...or get to retire gracefully. So I am prepared to cut him a little slack, especially if he can rationalise the entitled family down in numbers to a Norwegian level.

I think the requirement to bow before them kind of (wrongly) implies that.

Eh? Nobody is born better than you. Full stop.

The accident of who your mother or father happens to be tells you precisely nothing about a person’s worth, intelligence, or character.

When people bow or show deference, they’re acknowledging the office, the institution, the history it represents, not the actual human standing in front of them. The monarchy is a construct, the person wearing it is just a person.

The moment you start believing the title makes the individual genuinely “better than you”, you’ve crossed from respecting tradition into the idea that some people matter more than others by birthright. They don’t, and I don’t understand people who think they do.

Respect the role if that’s your thing but don’t confuse it with the individual deserving it, there are plenty of idiots born into power and sadly plenty more elected into it.

That I am supposed to offer them greater respect than I would do others just because who they are.

Outside of a basic level which you should give everyone, you damn well earn respect, you don't expect it as a right.

It's like those who say people should respect their elders. Complete twaddle. I'm 53 in a couple of weeks. I don't expect the younger folk I work with to respect me more just because I'm 20 or 30 years older than them. I've had to earn their respect.

And after decades dealing with the public, I've always had the most disrespect shown to me by those older than I am now.

Not sure if you've misunderstood my post or not, but, I agree with you, no one should bow to anyone else simply because of who their parents were. You say people bow for the position, not the person; I don't think you would agree with the history of the monarchy where they believed they were chosen by God.

Meanwhile Trump is blubbing about his ballroom.

Trump: "What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE. It cannot be built fast enough!"

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2026-04-26T14:38:14.092Z

Yes, because the White House is a notoriously security free zone with the only protection being an Anderson shelter hidden out by the swimming pool.

All those guns in America and they can’t find one that can hit the target.

I jokingly said this to my mates earlier (not that I want it to happen). You would think these people would be a good aim.

I wish people would stop trying to kill him. He'd only be replaced by someone worse if it were successful and if it isn't then his popularity goes up. It's such a counterproductive thing to do as it'll just give Trump and go more reason to clamp down on those who don't agree with them and will likely just prolong the agony. We need to let democracy take its course (hoping it's allowed to under this administration) and hope that next time the Americans wholeheartedly reject this course and that we have an adult running the US again at the earliest possible opportunity.

'In 1973, the young Donald Trump, after pointing out various wealthy people to his date, meets Roy Cohn, notorious at the time as former chief counsel to Joseph McCarthy, at a New York City social club. Trump complains that the federal government is investigating his real-estate mogul father, Fred Trump, for discrimination against African-American tenants; Cohn offers to help.

After Cohn blackmails the lead prosecutor with photos of him with a cabana boy, the prosecutor settles the case for little, despite evidence of racial discrimination. Trump eventually descends further into Cohn's orbit, seeing him as a better mentor than his father. Cohn teaches Trump about dressing well and media relations, and offers his "three rules": always attack, never admit wrongdoing, and always claim victory, even if defeated. Trump attends a decadent Cohn party, where he walks in on Cohn (whose homosexuality is an open secret) having an orgy.

Trump wants to develop the derelict midtown Commodore Hotel, near Grand Central Terminal, into a Hyatt. Cohn, using blackmail audiotapes of officials, helps Trump obtain a $160 million tax abatement for the project, outraging advocates for the poor. Trump does not ask Fred, with whom he has a tense relationship, for permission to build.

Trump develops the luxurious Trump Tower, belittling Fred's smaller achievements, and the media begins to treat him as a successful mogul. Cohn criticizes unions and welfare queens, presenting himself as a guardian of the American spirit, while attacking rules, morals, and truth. Against Cohn's advice, Trump proceeds with some real estate developments, such as the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, causing losses. During the Reagan era, Trump says the United States needs to be stronger instead of disrespected by foreign nations. Trump and Roger Stone approve of one of Reagan's slogans, "Let's Make America Great Again".'

Good post - everyone should really know the history of Trump as it explains everying about where the USA is at the moment - also, I think Sarah Churchwell and David Olusoga covered the period from McCarthy to Trump (featuring Roy Cohn) on their Journey Through Time podcast recently...

And interestingly, Woody Guthrie lived in, and wrote lyrics about, one of Fred Trump's racist housing blocks.
