My uncle told me about the Everton thing.

Just makes you realise how special BR and the Cobbolds were.

Ashton not fit to even lace their boots!

Great article - met a French neighbour for the first time the other day. As things often do we got on to football and he asked if I watched the PSG v Bayern game. I said nope, was watching Ipswich v Southampton. He then smiled and spoke at length about the great St Etienne team of that era and the beating they took af the hands of town (slightly before my time). Nice coincidence to see it pop up again in the article.

Also didn't know David Walsh was Suffolk based either.

Why bring Ashton into this , the guys done remarkably well since , it’s no good comparing with other eras totally different times and circumstances.

Ashton has none.

Excellent article from someone who’s obviously been paying attention to us. The headline is a bit unfortunate considering the unfortunate event that definitely didn’t reflect our values, but I’ll say no more about that lol

As a pensioner who has watched Town all his life this was a great article and brought back memories of the great era of Sir Bobby. Minor pedantic point, Mick Mills was not from Suffolk, he was born in Godalming near Guildford, was a youth team player at Portsmouth. The Portsmouth youth team scheme fell apart so Mick signed for Town as a 17 year old in 1966. Great servant to the club and was eventually awarded an MBE - the only Town player to be a recipient of such an award.

Having never seen him play (long before my time) I always get the impression that someone 'knows what they are talking about' when they mention the Beat.

'The Truly great Kevin Beattie' Held in such high regard by those that saw him!

Totally agree re ‘The Beat’. Had the privilege to watch him play many times including, sadly, his last appearance in the 1981 FA Cup Semi Final at Villa Park against City where he broke his arm.
I met Mick Mills at the 1981 EUFA Cup reunion in 2022 at the Corn Exchange. Brilliant night that was too. Interestingly, only me and one other guy on our table of 8 were at the final!!! Great days

Minor gripes - Pedants Corner time

Mills not from Suffolk, but Butcher "is"
SBR also courted by Barcelona

Nonetheless nice article

Kevin Beattie had an aura about him. When young, he was prone to being caught on the turn and sometimes out of position, but his pace, size and athleticism compensated while he was learning the game. Add in his brilliant CH partner Hunter (underrated) and you had the perfect partnership. Robson called them bacon and eggs, they went that well together.

In an age of how can I put it, ‘aggressive’ football, nobody took liberties with those two. You just wouldn’t unless you fancied time on the treatment table. Beattie could really play. He tackled like Rubber Duck’s truck (nod to Convoy), could jump as high as a house, could pass and had a hell of a shot on him. Just check out his goal in the 7-0 WBA rout. I swear the keeper ducked.

When he got the ball at started to run with it the crowd held its breath and the tartan rug seat brigade stood up. He had presence. He was one of those players even opposition supporters who saw him play remember. It was such a shame injury cut his career short. I’ll never forget his and Hunter’s performances in the 78 Final. They both carried injuries, but they ate Malcolm McDonald and his fellow forwards alive.

I wonder what he’d be worth in his prime now? A heck of a lot.

It was my privilege to see Kevin play, along with a good number of others from that time.

John Cobbold was a man of his era - he was no angel from all accounts.

But I dont think he blatentently lied to the fans to protect himself.
