Do the owners have no shame. Does the CEO have no shame. Obviously not. It’s money that matters. They may as well rob a bank. At least it’s a more honest redistribution of wealth.

Thanks for enlightening me. I don’t usually rant, but it just goes to show that ranting can indicate emotion surpassing education on a subject.

P&O cruises aren’t much better. Voyage contracts are the norm since the pandemic. Another thing like the pandemic or even a massive economic downturn and they’ll be able to get rid of crew without issue. They’re not the only ones at it. It’s all the shipping companies doing it. There are very few permanent contracts on offer.

Presumably one of our main sponsors, MSC, who operate hundreds of ships, far more than just a handful of cruise ships, have similar employment practices.

P&O was originally the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Company and whilst owned by them bought Princess cruises. P&O had purchased a ship called the Kungsholm which was originally used for Atlantic crossings. But once the Jumbo jet came into service ships were not required. P&O renamed the Kungsholm Sea Princess. When they purchased Princess cruises as they had a Sea Princess they renamed their ship Victoria. This sailed until 2002 and then was sold to a German Company who called it the Mona Lisa. Many of the older ships ran on heavy fuel oil, but the newer ones like Arvia and Iona run on Liquified Natural Gas.

As far as I am aware contracts of 9 months have been going for a long time. Many of the staff are from Goa and once they finish their contract they are flown home. They then, if they so wish to apply for another contract and have a refresher course before returning to a ship. Most gratuities are now included in a passengers fare, although if you wish you can still tip. They do work long hours, but have their accommodation on the ship and normally have their own canteen. I believe the gratuities were included in the fare because of a few reasons. Mainly that certain staff would get all the tips like your cabin steward or main dining room waiters, whereas bar staff and cleaners etc wouldn't get anything. The other thing was that certain passengers when it was the last night before disembarkation wouldn't turn up at their table as they didn't want to tip. Which whilst an individual choice and I don't believe in the American system of tipping for everything, seemed a bit mean to me.

Well I've heard that Southampton have just changed their club sponsor to MI5. Free pair of binoculars for every season ticket holder next season regardless of league, apparently. :)

Yeah 9 month contracts are the norm for some ratings. Most of the time they aren’t flown home, they’re flown to the city of employment. So for our Filipino guys they get flown to Manila or Cebu and have to make their own way home. For our Indian guys it’s one of 5 cities. There isn’t a refresher course between contracts, just standard 5 yearly refreshers. The Filipinos have to have a rather invasive pre embarkation medical exam before every contract. I’ve had guys complaining that they’ve done a 9 month contract and been told they have their next ship 6 weeks later and if they refuse they get put to the back of the list and end up struggling financially. I’ve sailed with quite a few ex cruise guys, they seem to prefer the cargo ships. I don’t think the Mrs would like it if I went over to the cruise ships…
