| And today, Zack will be……. on 14:49 - May 11 by Ryorry | So ZP didn’t get his refuse collected from the houseboat/bungalow address, and wouldn’t have made use of local fire/police services (+ driving a car on local roads, if he/his partner had one) if he needed them? Every household that fails to pay their council tax but uses the council for such services drives the cost up for everyone else, who then end up paying more. It’s not just illegal/antisocial, it’s selfishly cheating your neighbours. Doesn’t exactly endorse his “caring about others” image does it. |
Don't disagree Ryorry and it's why I acknowledged that we couldn't all opt out of conventional living or chaos would ensue (albeit I'm unsure of specific council arrangements with the houseboat mooring company re waste etc.). I don't know if Polanksi was paying council tax on his official, vacant residence or what financial / societal contributions he was making during that time, if any. It did appear as though the author was weighing the heft of potential offences and deciding which would make the more impactful story, however, to me anyway. Based on information provided in the article, that contractual agreements didn't permit the houseboat to be a main residence, I'm unsure how applying for council tax wouldn't simultaneously have resulted in an eviction or cease-and-desist notice. It seems plausible that he was part of a little community there, sharing a postal address, stretching the bounds of their ownership / lease agreements to embark on an alternative lifestyle, one which most of us wouldn't elect to follow. I'd be more critical personally if he was avoiding council tax on a legitimate home. without condoning behaviour that falls foul of acceptable* whichever way you frame it. *and of the law of course lol [Post edited 12 May 13:52]

| And today, Zack will be……. on 11:43 - May 12 by grow_our_own | Saying Zack Polanski neglected to pay his taxes isn't a smear. Telling the truth isn't a smear. It's extremely relevant information about someone who calls for higher tax. Especially someone who calls for taxes that, in reality, people won't actually pay (just like him). Yet he plans spending as if they will. |
It's now emerged he did pay council tax, at another property. So to say "Zack Polanski neglected to pay his taxes" is not the full story. And the rules around canal boats aren't straightforward. It also appears this came to light as he was selling the boat and described it as "our home". If it was his home then council tax was due, but that phrase was clearly used in order to make it sound more attractive, not necessarily because it was his main residence. As I said earlier, I look/wait for the detail, as these things never seem to be cut and dried. Especially when a politically-opposed journalist is on the case.

Most people I know on house boats do not pay council tax because it does not easily marry with council forms and processes, and the councils are generally very aware of this, knowing that the residents pay other associated fees (mooring, services etc) that cover their place of residence. Frankly, i coudn't really care less about silly CV embellishments. In many instances it is right wing media overstating simple mistakes or non-normative processes such as this and making it sound like deep corruption. In other instances he was clearly a fool and either spun his history or just said things in ways that he new regrets. I am not a huge Zack Polanski fan, though recognise his energy and profile has hugely helped the party. That said, I couldn't really care about such minor, insignificant details about one person when there are countless actual racists, anti-Semites, homophobes, transphobes and overtly corrupt people on a larger scale now running councils and in positions of real power. In my mind any press or people that repeatedly focus on Zack's CV and not on nefarious CVs, histories, social media evidence, statements, and financial irregularities from other parties - especially Reform - are not doing any of it in good faith and, frankly, it's a tiring death rattle of old-school media trying to still control a politics it has done for many decades but no longer really can. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No. I just think actual fascism is a more important thing to look at, and I read those who disagree - such as yourself and the Telegraph - as being disingenuous and I presume supporting of the right wing things going on.

I imagine it's similar to living on halting sites in some ways. It's a bit if a grey area, some sites yer expected to pay council tax ( mainly official sites with full amenities). Other unofficial sites without basic lighting etc yer don't generally pay council tax and families 'on the road' aren't generally asked for council tax as yer often not receiving many of the services associated with Council tax. More worryingly the issue of wether this bloke as paid his council tax appears more important/newsworthy then the fact that multiple members of the political party favourites to win the next election have been saying stuff like the holocaust was a hoax or that Nigerians should be melted down to fill pot holes or that all Muslims are pure scum and should be blasted off the earth. How is Dan Neidle, who broke this story, "politically-opposed" to Polanski/Greens? He writes about politicians of all colours, right, left, and centre. Has no skin in the game. Eg, he forced the resignation of the Tory chancellor in 2022 (Zahawi). So Polanski told journalists narrowboat was his main residence, neighbours say it was his main residence, but you're saying it might not be because he might have been lying to journalists? Hardly much of a defence of Polanski's character if so. I tend to believe the neighbours. Fact is, for someone who claims to place high importance in increasing tax revenue, to (at best) not bother looking up what tax he should be paying himself stinks of hypocrisy. At worst, he's a criminal tax evader. [Post edited 12 May 17:27]

I just think it's important for us to be able to trust *all* politicians as sound, decent, law-abiding individuals with integrity, irrespective of party (I know, a pipe dream ...). Angela Rayner, Labour's deputy prime minister resigned following the finding that she'd breached the ministerial code in relation to her failure to pay the correct amount of tax on one of her properties. I know ZP's not an MP, but he should be held to the same standards as other party leaders.

Again, I was talking in general terms about the (mostly) right wing press, not this specific journalist or story. It's very clear you're against The Greens/Polanski and aren't looking at this story objectively. If he were a criminal tax evader he'd have been arrested.

Only one journalist is responsible for us having this conversation about Polanski's neglect (at best) to pay tax: Dan Neidle. He's hardly GB news. [Post edited 13 May 11:21]
