Very sensible move by Starmer.. Burnham has a tough fight on his hands.

I had hoped he'd get a Liverpool seat.

As an Evertonian who has done an awful lot on Hillsborough, it would have been a canter. And Reform seems much less of a thing than in parts of Greater Manchester.

Still, if Burnham can't win in Makefield, Labour might as well concede to Reform now.

As usual, Andrew Neil sums up the absurdity of the who situation.

There absolutely is a need in the national interest if we look a mere three years into the future.

Sorry, mistaken upvote. He must have been living under a rock if he doesn’t know why they’re doing this. Or maybe in the South of France where he’s so divorced from normal Brits he hasn’t go a clue what he’s talking about

Poll: Escaped Goat of the day. Who’s it going to be?

So Andy Burnham is the only member of the entire Labour party who can stop Reform winning a General Election?

An elected Labour government with three years left in power, and a massive majority can only be saved by one man?

I think people are losing their minds tbh.

The Guardian is suggesting 18 June as the most likely day.

I can't think of anything that says more about the dreadful state we are in than the fact that a Blairite who lost two previous leadership elections and is more of the same neoliberal consensus is seen as the great hope.

Reminds me of all the hype about Finchy in " The Office"

I always felt that Burnham would have a lot more credibility if he hadn't been such a Blairite

And he cut back on the Just 4 Men hair dye

And he looked a bit less like a sock puppet

It was always the case that the Labour party was much too loyal to leaders who weren't cutting it. That was never the case with the Tories.

But things changed with Corbyn in 2016 when the PLP tried to bring him down

Then it was differences of policy. This time I think it is the case that many MPs fear for their seats, having by all accounts had appalling feedback about Starmer.

The problem it seems to me is that there is a complete lack of good alternatives in PLP. This is indicative of the fact that the calibre of MPs is much lower than in the days of old when political giants were two a penny.

That really does only leave Andy Burnham who could be said to represent a new broom, as well having a lack of involvement in the failed political project.

Burnham didn't win those last two leadership elections for a reason. He's a Blairite. And not the answer.

We've become obsessed with personalities. Where are the IDEAS?

What was needed was a real debate and exchange of ideas. Instead we're going to get a coronation.

The day after England’s opening match in the World Cup then.

I’d take the state of the country under Blair every day of the week compared to the decline we’ve had since 2010.

- Minimum wage
- Massive reductions in poverty, child poverty and pensioner poverty
- Sure Start programme with the largest boost to early years support on record
- Support for higher education for all irrespective of wealth
- Large reductions in NHS waiting lists (a tiny fraction of what they are now)
- Huge leaps in human rights protects (same sec relationships, adoption of ECHR)
- Improvement in employment rights for workers

Just to mention a few headlines. No government has done more for normal people in my lifetime. Of course they weren’t perfect, but we don’t get to choose perfect. We can only choose the best of what’s offered to us. If they install Burnham as leader, it comes down to whether you’d prefer him or Farage.

Indeed, I am absolutely no Blair fan but any stretch of the imagination- but actually it would be a marked improvement to return to those values, instead of whatever *this* is.

And he caused the illegal immigration problem in this country because of his illegal war

The massive increase in small boats was caused by Nigel Farage’s Brexit taking us out of the Dublin Agreement. If an asylum seeker has their application rejected, they can’t try again in another EU country. Now we’re out, we’re the obvious place for people to have a second bite of the cherry.

Also worth noting the number of asylum hotels is down by half on its peak from 2023 and there was a 42% reduction in boat crossings in the first four months of the year, compared to the same period in 2025.
