I don't imagine Mark Ashton has ever been particularly involved in talent ID anyway. Assume it'll be the scouts and recruitment analysts under the Director of Recruitment who'll present options, then targets will be agreed with McKenna (on the playing side) and Ashton (on the financial side) later.

If all the failed signings are Ashton’s fault, who are we crediting with all the successes? I assume someone completely different?

As I said to the other poster, im happy for you to disagree, I feel we took to long to get our recruitment set up going and will always stand by that.
I didn't really say anything above about the recruitment being crap itself, it;s been mixed like most clubs. But for the prem it needs to be a different bag to what we did last time here, that i feel we all agree and for that to happen it needs to be elite level recruitment. |
Mate it's so silly to say we've had 5 years (in the context of it should be elite ready). We've massively overachieved. The decisions that were made around recruitment and how to implement it in a phased manner have been proven correct. We got to the prem crazy early. It wasn't anyone expectation that what we did was possible so quickly really. Rightly so we have carefully invested and built growth step by step for the club with many and different priorities.
The prem first time turbo charged our recruitment infrastructure spend and it has kicked on but we are still going to be a way off having everything we want and need. But it should function much better now. | |

You forgot about spending £200 million for our worst season in the clubs history.
I’d say that’s at least equally as instructive for success in the premier league as finishing 1 point ahead of Millwall and behind Plymouth.
Much more instructive .., McKenna is a great coach, Ashton loves a deal and recruited McKenna - I’m not sure how much evidence you need after £200 million spent that neither are elite at talent id.
But their own measure they spent £70 million on wide right oakhers not good enough.
Everyone can see we might have ONE player good enough and through that recruitment, our competition, Leeds, Sunderland, Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth - they all signed world class talent for less investment.
Brighton reserves are better than us, West Han are TWO levels above us, that’s where we are.
Name the players that you know are premier league - I have only one, and that’s not certain, most of them have already failed at that level, and didn’t stand out this season either.
It’s time to stop being so deluded .., Marks record is 37 years long.

In what world does a promotion-chasing League 1 club successfully build an 'elite' recruitment department? We weren't even expecting promotion in 23/24, so we wouldn't have been looking to compete with parachute clubs even at that stage. This is not Football Manager.
