And I thought this passage was spot on.

"Ipswich had come back down with deep pockets but, their squad shaken up by the consequences of a sharp rise and rapid fall, it took months to forge cohesion in a new-look side. McKenna was tasked with rebuilding a plane in mid‑air and, for the first time, was battling raised expectations among Ipswich’s supporters too. On a couple of occasions his frustration at the muted atmosphere around Portman Road, such a vibrant venue during the good times, was obvious."

My sadness is that we rarely sang the Super Kieran McKenna song last season because you could see that he really appreciated it.

Maybe, just maybe ....

yeah, I read that last night. Made me a bit emotional. Thought it really captured the spirit of KMs time

Yes. I think he was rightly annoyed at points last season with support.

Some people have no soul. The amount of people wanting to run him down last season. Even now people shrugging their shoulders at his record and shouting 'next' like someone bored skipping through TV channels.

Now that's the way to do it, all about the man himself and not a single mention or photograph of you know who!! The club could learn something from that.

It’s a good article.

The atmosphere in PR was ok to excellent and far better than the derision and constant moaning by a percentage on here - who can forget the proverbial spit flying and tears of rage when Charlton scored early at the Valley. Or the McKenna out sht storm on 2 Dec. The entitlement was ridiculous and KM was aware of it.

Whether this was a factor in him going, who knows. Only him. Few appreciate how difficult last season was after being ripped apart in the Premier League, yet he did it. Southampton and Leicester, with a stronger base didn’t. In many ways it was a bigger achievement than the 2023/24 ambush.

Did he get the credit he was due despite it being obvious what he was trying to do? By most supporters, but not all. Bit sad really.

Yes he certainly deserved more support last season, that said, if he gets one of the top jobs it’ll be infinitely more brutal. The modern top 6 fan has zero patience.

Perhaps, one day, McKenna and Ipswich will cross paths again. Maybe he will re-encounter the youngsters who, brought to Portman Road by parents he had inspired to give their club a second chance, sang his name in the playground and wept when told of his departure. He will move again among longstanding supporters who, for whatever reason, had lost a connection with the town or club before regaining something incalculable.

Wow. Spot. On.

This was true even at the vast majority of away games.

I just sensed an underlying discontent with him and the team on the part of many fans, which came to a head at Wrexham. Thankfully, I missed it as I had to head off for my train, but that isn't the way true fans should behave.

I think expectations played a big part but we needed to remember where we were when he took over.

Was it not in part because it was never quite clear who was at the back and who was in attack and how to fit their names neatly into the song?

That was an issue going far back as Sir Bobby. Didn’t he famously refer to some Town fans as zombies?

It was different, though, last season because the same fans who had supported us to the rafters during the double promotions and in the Premier League were often relatively lacklustre and sometimes hostile last season.

And it is clear that this was something McKenna sensed.

It definitely felt different, even from afar. The slow start didn’t help things and that early sense that free-scoring Coventry were running away with the league.

But, how lucky we are to be able to moan about the manner in which we got promoted.
