It’s sad to think how things have changed in this country since then when it comes to how female MPs are treated, how freely people offer up political violence etc. Anyone else feel like it wasn’t the moment we stopped as a country and changed for the better, but the start of a decline towards the gutter?

It has been turbo charged now by the fact most people get their news from facebook or only seeing what Elon wants them to see on X. Not very confident the genie can ever be put back in the bottle from here.
| It’s been 10 years Jo Cox was murdered on 13:54 - Jun 17 with 1309 views | cbower | She was my MP. A tragedy which perhaps should've been a turning point towards amore tolerant society. However, and considering what she openly advocated in her words somewhat perversely, the opposite has transpired. We are more divided and seemingly entrenched in our politics with a worldwide lurch to the right apparent. The toxicity of social media (even our beloved TWTD at times) is repugnant and appears unstoppable. I see changing attitudes at school, not least amongst a growing numbers of teenage boys with more and more boorish behaviour and incidents of open sexism, racism and homophobia more prevalent. 10 years ago we thought we'd all but eradicated that cr@p in the younger generation but I guess society is most vulnerable when it becomes complacent isn't it. | |

David Amess was everything that a local MP should be. Visible and available for his constituents, regularly holding surgeries and attending local events. A huge champion for Southend and the surrounding area - he would make time for you even if it was clear he would never get your vote. While he was obviously a conservative politician, he was never divisive, always polite. His murder really hit the local community.

Yes that was especially sad because it felt like people made political capital out of it over the need to show respect.

He also then went and posed with his fake poster which mimicked Nazi propaganda right after. Amazing a lot of people forget he did that.

So who has blood on their hands for David Amess, multiple attempts on Trump and Charlie Kirk? You can't have it both ways.

Kirk and Trump are nothing to do with this (assuming you believe Trump's wasn't a hoax of course) As for Amess who on the left is consistently encouraging violence? Let alone Islamic terrorism? I can't work out if your but both sides here is disgusting or just stupidity. You've highlighted exactly what I was talking about when it came to DA's murder though. Are you saying Jo Cox and David Amess purposefully baited people to attack them etc?

I think the whole point is that politics generally has become so divisive and full of hatred. I hate what Farage stands for but I would never want anyone to cause him physical harm. You have to admit the rhetoric shared by politicians like Farage is deeply divisive. It started around Brexit where identity became entrenched with political views. People became defined by which side of the debate we stood on. I recall the murder of Jo Cox and the hope that it might be a turning point. The deaths of Amess and Kirk only reinforce that it wasn't a turning point at all. Whilst the attempts on Trump's life are also awful, it should be remembered that assassinations of people in positions of power have been a theme throughout history.

If we agree that the left are not consistently encouraging violence and yet right-wing people are being killed or targeted, then it follows that when left-wing people are being killed or targeted then that doesn't necessarily mean the reason was incitement by right-wing people.

I disagree profoundly with the vast majority of Farage's views but what does divisive even mean? He has a viewpoint and people either agree or disagree with it. That's how it works. If somebody on the opposite end of the political spectrum makes their views known and the same people who agreed with Farage disagree and vice versa, isn't that of equal divisiveness? You could make a good case that his methods are somewhat Machiavellian, and you could also expose Farage where the truth has not been told, but that's not really the point.

On your last paragraph, I don't see a Niccolo Machiavelli advising Farage. Like Trump he seems to career off on his own tangents that inspire neither fear or love. There is nothing princely about either of them.
