| There are going to many who will be upset with the new manager 06:47 - Jun 20 with 2128 views | muccletonjoe | Impossible to get a manager in who is going to please everyone. Many will be disappointed that their preferred candidate didn't get the job, for whatever reason. Myself included. But when the dust settles and Gary O'Neil starts putting together his team, we will all be behind them and hoping they do well, why are we here otherwise ? I get that if things do not start well, there will be very little good will in the bank like with KM , that is football and the nature of the game. But he does need and deserve a fair start from us. | | | | |

Maybe when they analysed the feedback from experts in the industry GON was top of that process. Maybe he wasn't even on the list. GON was employed and it seems doing a good job, OSG has been unemployed for a little while now Maybe the sun won't shine tomorrow

| There are going to many who will be upset with the new manager on 09:27 - Jun 20 by andyblue231 | Yes but this coming season isn’t the same as our last season in the prem. we are in a stronger position than Sunderland were. Why have we assumed 17th is our limit when others clubs have proved it doesn’t have to be. |
Ok. That's a slightly different question. I was responding to your post that was looking back not forwards. You never know. The stars may align and we'll have an above expectation season. We all hope for that but to avoid disappointment I tend to set my expectations a little lower. It makes failure that little bit easier to swallow! Let's get to safety first then see where the season takes us. Getting back to the OP, the sad thing is that some here have written off the season based on GONs impending arrival. That feels just so depressing before they've even joined, signed a player or kicked a ball.
| "Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see?" |

I'm not overwhelmed by the appointment, but it feels like some are trying to build a movement of it being a disaster before he has even got in the door. Some supporters eh? |
You know I hate everyone at the best of times

Why is it that we don’t think that’s possible when it was for those clubs? We are objectively in a better position as a club than Sunderland were when they were promoted. Just interested why, with this appointment, we seem to have adopted the brace position immediately. [Post edited 20 Jun 9:02]

Do you not think Leeds and Sunderland set their success bar at 17th and adopted the brace position initially? I think Sunderland fans in particular must have been gobsmacked at how their season panned out...

But are you telling me that the almost constant conveyor belt of talented managers from across Europe and the world stopped this year? I wanted a bold, talented coach with a high ceiling and a fresh approach. Not a brace position, attritional, 17th if everything goes well appointment. I would have appointed Kim Hellberg above GON. the data suggested he was a brilliant coach and he’s talked about as a future elite manager. You’re free to disagree but to answer your question, that’s the sort of appointment I wanted. Clubs like us need to do something different. A manager needs to add real value. This is an utterly pathetic appointment. But he’ll have my support when the season starts. [Post edited 20 Jun 9:35]

Gary O'Neil is a talented manager in Europe. Top half finish in Ligue 1, only four losses after he took over, quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference League. Not shabby at all. Plus he has Prem experience, too - making him less of an unknown quantity than some mystery name picked on pure optimism.

He’s definitely an exciting European manager. Definitely. I’m Excited.

He might play more attractive football (apparently) but he would have been a much worse option. I'll think O'Neil will do OK. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Thomas Frank for example is a top PL coach and has a record which, with all due respect to ourselves, should land him an established PL club, not one which is realistically going to be in a relegation battle all season. Maybe we’re not as compelling and attractive a proposal as some want to believe we are? |
Totally agree with you. The anti GON already worries me for the season ahead - it’s going to be very tough and it concerns me there will be little quarter given for O’Neil by some judging by comments on here and elsewhere in the last few days. Who do these people expect us to bring in for what’s going to be a relegation battle most likely. Can’t say GON excites me but when I look at the current alternatives he seems as good a pick as any and I’ll be supporting him and the team in the season ahead.

Aspirational not entitled. I don’t assume success but I believe it is attainable. Just like it has been for other clubs of our size.

A guy with one year less managerial experience than KM and in his very first managerial season kept Bournemouth safely up in the PL. Had his work cut out at Wolves, 2/3 players with ego's greater than their footballing ability and disruptive as we saw for ourselves. I'd venture to say overall, that's a very decent start for a very inexperienced manager still. I'd rather listen to what the likes of Antoine Semenyo says then the garbage spouted by many others.

If he doesn't it will be pretty tense pretty quickly. That is how football works, so hopefully a winning start.
