….this morning. I was not happy on hearing the imminent appointment of GON yesterday, and it would appear I was far from alone in this, but after reading some very reasoned posts and comments on here yesterday evening as to why he could be a good fit for this coming season, I’ve slept on it and feel there is probably no one better currently available or fitting the criteria needed to hopefully keep us up.

Spot on. It may well be that Ipswich Town can bring out the best of Gary O’Neil if he is shown a degree of patience from the fan base.
We’ve been thoroughly spoiled three out of the last four seasons playing some incredible football in the process.
On reflection, a more pragmatic approach to the coming season will be required and reading up a bit on how he sets up his team to play, might just be just the chap.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with feeling very underwhelmed by the appointment or that we could have done better but will still back the new manager.

Feel similar myself, although a point I have is that Ashton said he cast net far and wide for this appointment and we’ve ended up with someone he’s already worked with. Is this because he’s the best candidate, or Ashton playing it safe with someone he knows?

I think that's a really good point - the traditional patience we (should!) show as support might be really good for him.
Just watching the piece about Graham Potter on BBC ahead of the Sweden Holland game and was reminded of how brutal an industry it now is. One minute you're wanted, the next fans and owners can drop you almost immediately. Many of these coaches are good coaches but the game is now so impatient and keen for a scapegoat that they get dropped before anyone bothers to do any analysis.
O'Neil talks in the Telegraph piece about how he played with players who said once they were finished they were going to leave football completely and go into property. He said he always wanted to coach. I'm sure he could have set up a very comfortable life for himself without the hassle so it shows his determination. Liverpool academy, Bournemouth, Wolves all clearly had high regard for him.
Hopefully here he can get time and space to continue to develop. He's still a very young coach.

I agree with others - great post and very thought provoking thanks.
The comment about casting the net far and wide and then possibly choosing somebody you know is interesting. You are right. It is a natural tendency to build a team with at least some people that you have knowledge of. Relationships are everything. Whether that’s cutting out a risk or narrowing candidates/options detrimentally by excluding somebody better potentially is always a conundrum.
I don’t have a clue how a football manager at that level is found or the process involved, who approves what etc. what is the criteria? Back in Micks time there was no interest in anything but the first team so that’s all he had to think about.
When Gamechanger came in and Cook wasn’t working out, who made the decision to out him? Ashton? The owners? I would hope it was both. In recruiting KM, I suspect MA had him in mind and pushed hard on it. Given the club was just reforming, would the owners have pushed back? Clearly not.
So what is the Americans involvement now? If I was Brightpath/an investor etc I’d want to know what was happening and some involvement in approving such a key and costly appointment. It’s their money after all and a lot of it. Why would you not, especially as the CEO is an employee?
In conclusion, I have no idea how it’s sorted with a club like ITFC. Maybe somebody closer like Joe can explain it. |  | | |

I'm coming to this conclusion. It maybe that we're the best club for him now and he's actually what we need. I also didn't realise that Wolves wanted to reappoint him last season before Edwards got the job which shows the chaos that Wolves were.
Looking at some of his coaching videos online and the fact he is still a young coach/manager and will be bringing Critchley in who despite his limited success as a manager, he was quite a respected coach from what I remember.
And if I look back at who we've appointed previously I thought Keane, Hurst, Cook would all be great and was disappointed and was against Royle, not wild about Mickma and not sure about KMc so leaning to maybe this isn't the worst route to go.... |  | | |

... Then after a year or two with the new girl, getting down the gym, growing your mind, building your confidence and expanding your horizons you realise that you're a good catch and worthy of someone who was better than any of your previous girlfriends.
