Yes, you need big physical people in the side, but not everybody.
Clarke and JP are not a risk. They are flippin good players who provide an X factor. Not everyone in the Premier League has the skills they now have.
Sunderland side is built around Xhaka and Brobbey. Terrific players. The spine of the team. You need that but you need others outside the core with a different set of skills.
I believe we underestimate how good some of these players are. Not all, but some and overall we have a better baseline than two years ago. |  | | |

I think we can if we do some serious surgery on the right hand side.
Atm our right hand side options are Mcateer and Egeli who doesn't even look like a right winger. If we can get a decent right sided player in (maybe even 2) who can scare premier league defenders that should free up some space for Clarke and Philogene. I would be ok going in to the season with those 2 as our left side options. |  |

Both Jaden and Jack are very lightweight for the Premiership. I’d be cashing in on one. Getting someone more robust in for that left hand side. The one that stays would be good enough for back up. |

Jaden was great on the pitch last season sharing that role with Clarke … but I’d not be bothered if he left… the Prem season he had was very average and if the Italian league is after him and he and his agent are interested that says a lot .. it’s fast becoming a Saudi/MLS league for ageing superstars or average prem players but without the money.
I’ve never really felt he was here right from the start of the soap opera of him joining… thanks for the all the Norwich fish/goals but it’s ok by me if he goes. |
I would be, I think we've got to keep him.
Very average is a harsh appraisal of our relegation season IMO, he spent the first half getting fairly regular minutes off the bench for Villa, including 90 against Bayern Munich in a Champions league win. Then joined a side heading for relegation in January, had to integrate in a new team and made about 5 starts before an injury that finished his season. He'd shown some quality though, Old Trafford comes to mind where he scored 2, but I think its hard to really appraise him on the evidence we saw and the nature of his season.
To my mind he's one of a handful we have that I'd say are premier league quality. O'Shea, Philogene, Davis probably. Maybe Matusiwa and Clarke. We've already got a lot of recruitment to do without losing any of those. |  | | |

I'd say we can afford to shift either him or Clarke, if - and ONLY if - we sign one further player not only good enough to start in that position but who is potentially an upgrade. |  |
