They didn't do so well the last time we were in the PL, did they? Not nice and ignoring the fact that they helped get us promotion. However... that's how football works. And isn't it better that GON works with his people he closest with.
One big factor.... when Kieran made the decision about his own future.... he also made a decision about his own coaching team. Not all on Mark... or Gaz.
And when Kieran gets a decent PL job in 6 months time he can then turn to his old coaching team and recruit them. If they were still with us.... we'd have to recruit new coaching staff, perhaps midway through a season. |

My guess is they have seen the negative reaction from quite a few on social media and are letting people get used to the idea before announcing it. They won’t want lots of negative comments on the clubs socials when officially announcing it. I think they’ll still get them anyway so they might aswell just get it over and done with. | | | |

I think people are reading FAR too much into the timeline if I'm honest.
If the club knew there was a realistic chance McKenna was leaving, that doesn't automatically mean they spent 26 days negotiating exclusively with O'Neil. I'd be amazed if Ashton wasn't speaking to MULTIPLE candidates and exploring multiple routes during that period.
The thing alot of people seem to assume is that if a manager isn't announced immediately then something must have gone wrong . Sometimes thats true, but sometimes football appointments just take time. Contracts, compensation, staffing, family considerations, holidays, ownership sign-off..., theres a million moving parts.
Could there have been a U-TURN somewhere? Possibly. Football is full of them. But equally it could just be that the club's first choice wasn't available, or wanted more time, or simply said no. Thats not exactly unheard of.
What I find slightly STRANGE is that some supporters seem desperate for there to be some dramatic story behind it all. Sometimes the boring explanation is the correct one . McKenna left, the club assessed the market, spoke to candidates and are now appointing the person they think is the best fit.
As for Ole..., I'd genuinely be interested to know why people think he'd be such an obvious UPGRADE. He's got a bigger name than O'Neil certainly, but football clubs shouldn't be appointing managers based on who gets the biggest reaction on facebook.,.
Thats actually one of the reasons I keep saying the same THING . The process matters more than the name. If Ashton and the ownership group have spent a month looking at candidates and landed on O'Neil, then judge them on that decision over time.
Because if we're already tallking about who replaces him before he's even wallked through the door , thats probably not a great place to start from.
Ultimately we'll know alot more once somebody is actually APPOINTED. Until then we're all trying to fill in blanks with rumours, half-information and the odd emoji on fbook . [Post edited 22 Jun 21:03]
