| Mexico England on 20:33 - Jul 3 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | This would be a disaster for us. Sports science is key and England would have had a very important recovery road map for this game, let alone with the other conditions we are about to face. We already played the day after Mexico who haven’t travelled. Scattered storms at 40%, what is this nonsense? The BS games have started already! I bet they are in FIFAs ear. Not to mention my pregame plans for Brazil Norway leading into kickoff. Nightmare! [Post edited 3 Jul 20:34]

FIFA pointing to 'we can rearrange any match for any reason' in the tournament rules feels especially telling. Almost as if even they don't believe their own spiel.

The Brazil Norway kick off would be adjusted to ensure there is no clash still. I guess it's one of those things and a consequence of playing where the storm risk is too high to play when there is one. I think England's preparation has been ruined by losing all right backs and not playing at altitude at all until Sunday whilst Mexico have been playing there all tournament. It's one of those typical home country advantages that come with hosting the tournament.

It’s forecast to rain, moving the game by 6 hours this late is insane.

Let alone play football in 26 degree heat. Unless you want them to come home it’s woeful for our chances. The only slight glimmer is less time spent at altitude which may be a small crumb of comfort. But seriously…, YOU not having to stay up late V’s our lions getting sawn off the log, what a time to be alive. |
It's actually the coolest part of the afternoon: Stop being so contrarian. It's more than a little wearing.

I agree that that's probably one of the key factors. I'm a little surprised that this wasn't considered earlier, though, given that the draw made this match-up a very strong possibility right from the outset.

The biggest irony is that darkhorse's chosen contrarian temperature is the one from the original kick off time rather than the proposed changed one!

Is there a reason that games get suspended when there is a thunderstorm in the US/Mexico? I am not aware of that happening elsewhere? Is there a higher risk of lightning hitting spectators or players for some odd reason?

No chance, Mexico in FIFAs ear would be. The viewership in North America would be more in prime time slot and not like England won’t watch at 1am

It's because North American thunderstorms are a completely different beast. They make English storms look like someone flicking the bathroom light on and off.

Weather is weather. Lightening within a certain radius, not many parts of the world face it during their regular seasons. It’s so volatile in the summer with systems, warm air from the gulf hits what’s coming down from the north. Flying in the south this time of year is a nightmare. I’m suspicious of this though, the weather forecast Sunday night does not warrant FIFA doing something unprecedented. Don’t underestimate how much it affects Englands preparations. Will be curious to hear the FAs response. [Post edited 3 Jul 20:54]

Good side, in form, home advantage, tough conditions, all true, but you would be forgiven for thinking we’ve been told we’re starting on -4. Recent results include a 1-0 against South Korea and a 1-0 against Australia. It’s a challenge for us, it’s not terminal. We’ve got a squad of fit, athletic, professional footballers. Tons of subs, 2 x 3 minute hydration breaks and 24 degree temperatures. Regardless of when we play there’s going to be the home crowd and altitude against us. We just need to go in there swinging, use our experience to kill momentum when we need to, defend our box better than we have, and let loose offensively. No fear.

In the US, if lighting strikes within 8 miles of the ground, the game must be postponed until 30 mins have passed since the last strike within 8 miles. I assume the rules are the same for the Mexico & Canada games to ensure consistency.

So you are saying the lightning is worse and somehow more likely to strike spectators or players (rather than some lightning conductor on attached to the stadium. Or does the country that gave us Benjamin Franklin not know about lightning conductors?

It's some legal health and safety ruling is it? I can understand it on a golf course but not in a football ground. It doesn't happen in any other country does it?

7000ft - child’s play. A few weeks ago I was 30,000ft up and I was able to breath with ease. Also, I ate a sandwicg, drank a Diet Coke and read a book. Easy.

That’s probably a good reason pointing to it NOT being a sly move to boost viewing figures. It makes no sense moving now just 2 days out, not with all the impact on existing logistics. Thunderstorms are forecast and have ben regular in the late afternoon/early evening (according to BBC pundits out there).

You’ll have to ask a meteorologist, it’s just much more frequent and volatile isn’t it? Rather than it being a bit windy one night in the 80s that wasn’t forecast properly.

In the US they empty all the swimming pools if there is a lightning strike within 5 miles. **Of people, not water**
