Either there is a genuine risk (in which case why not suspend play anywhere when there is the risk?) or there isn't.
What happens to spectators when they suspend play? Do they have to leave the stadium and seek shelter somewhere? Has there been an incident where spectators have been struck because the evacuation came too late? Or do they all stay in place waiting? Are there recorded incidents where lightning has struck seats or the pitch in an evacuated or empty stadium?
Perhaps a meteorologist can explain why there is some particular risk to spectators/players that is negated by stopping play and isn't a risk in other parts of the world. I doubt it, though. It sounds to me like an ill-thought over-implementation of health and safety. | |

If you get close to a storm in the Americas they can get seriously scary, and throw down insane numbers of lightning strikes inside a very small area compared to what we get here.
They tend to be exceptionally powerful, very intense and very localised.
Spectators in the World cup scenario are actually fairly well protected as the metal structure of modern stadia grounds quite quickly, its the playing area with the greatest risk. That said, I did have to evacuate from a baseball field, (dull sport), on one occasion, as the 'beechers' were all metal. [Post edited 3 Jul 21:27]

Maybe it's horses for courses, and the stadium for the NZ game was less enclosed? I think it was at Tampa Bay's stadium, which is very light on roof coverage.
I certainly wouldn't want to be sat out in a storm in some of the more open NFL stadia that are being used. | |

It’s also not an issue because it doesn’t exist. It’ll be hotter in the UK than in Mexico City on Sunday. Noon there is expected to be about 21° cloudy with drizzle, and then heavy storms moving in from mid-afternoon onwards. Perfect football weather really (until any very heavy rain/lightning strikes that is, assuming they show up!). |  |
