Sometimes I giggle about the frothing lunatic who’s put me on ignore who now has to constantly log out to see what I’ve said, because beneath the carefully honed persona of indifference lurks a pitiful egomaniac in utter denial….

It's potentially because he and his party represent the thoughts of the majority of the British people.

Again, genuine question, what are those thoughts and, even more significantly, what is it that you feel means Reform are better placed to resolve those than other parties.

For transparency, I don't think either the Tories or Labour have exactly covered themselves in glory but I am struggling to see (and I have tried reading) what solutions Reform offer.

Hey Homer, soundbites and short sentences are not the best place for this. I also don't have the intelligent capacity to elaborate further. But let me try a few words ....

The crux of it comes down to the absolute contempt the established parties have had for the British people since 2016 revolving around the matter of immigration. Yes the people voted for "Brexit" per se. But we all know the vote was for control of the British borders and to stop illegal immigration.

What's happened in the decade since with the floodgates increasing shows this contempt to be real. Therefore the people have finally had enough, which is why we are where we are now.

How can anyone trust anything these established parties say anymore? They treat the British people as idiots and think their words of distraction politics are good enough to fool the average person.

I do not necessarily think Reform is the answer, and maybe many other voters don't also. But faced with the options and faced with recent clear historical context which every voter has felt, many people beiieve there is simply no other choice.

Guessing this thread has been dredged up as it's by-election week, but I'll bite...

"But we all know the vote was for control of the British borders and to stop illegal immigration."

Well, that's wrong for a start...the immigration that was demonised by the Brexit campaign was legal immigration from EU countries; anyone voting for Brexit to stop illegal immigration would have been self-harming, as while we were in the EU we had the Dublin regulation as a safeguard.

If your reference to the "floodgates increasing" refers to small boat crossings, then do you think it's a coincidence that these have increased massively since we left the Dublin regulation in 2020, or maybe because the people making these crossings are aware we no longer have a mechanism to automatically return them to the EU country they arrived from?

Switching from Brexit to Reform, Farage is still telling the British public that their woes are caused by foreigners; he's just moved on to different ones.

"How can anyone trust anything these established parties say anymore? They treat the British people as idiots and think their words of distraction politics are good enough to fool the average person."

The only person treating the British public as idiots at the moment is Nigel Farage, by calling a by-election as a "distraction" (to use your own word) from the parliamentary investigation into his dodgy donations. The "established parties" saw through that and didn't play along, so he will no doubt win on Thursday; the investigation will then resume, and at some point there will be a recall leading to another by-election (which will cost the British taxpayers a further £250,000) involving the established parties.

On Thursday, I hope the people of Clacton vote for the Bin, not the contents

If there are issues with uncontrolled immigration since 2016 that is on the Tories, numbers went through the roof, all the while saying they were tough in it.

Under this Labour term numbers have dropped dramatically.

It's like the Trump supporters in the US. They've nailed their colours to his mast and no matter how many facts you show them they will not be deterred from following their messiah.
They won't be persuaded by arguments or evidence, so it's pointless trying.

If the British people think immigration is the biggest problem then the British people ARE idiots.

Incredible that on one hand you use the phrase "distraction politics" and on the other support Farage, the absolute king of "distraction politics".

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

You're right that disagreement itself isn't the problem. Any reasonable person accepts different viewpoints and opinions, that's not what winds people up.

What frustrates people, I think, is less about having a different view and more about how that view holds up when it's tested. If someone puts forward a position, gets pushed back with solid evidence, and just doesn't engage with it, repeats the same claim rather than addressing the counter evidence, that's where the frustration comes from. Not disagreement itself, but a perceived unwillingness to actually weigh the pushback.

The reasonable position, surely, is: hold your view, defend it if challenged, but if something is shown to be wrong on the evidence, be willing to update. That's not caving to the majority, it's just how reasonable disagreement is supposed to work.

I agree with the majority of what you’re saying, but it is dependent on both parties coming to a discussion with the belief and decency that the other people posting are not bad actors. I’m a centre right voter,, I think people make better decisions for themselves than the state. I’m euro sceptic for reasons I believe to be valid and I consider illegal migration to be incredibly damaging to those people coming here by that method and it distorts the social contract many of us have.

I also accept that at times I’m susceptible to being a tinge biased, but that’s human and those with other views often do the same. The good people on here admit it and we have good back and forth.-

However I’ve been maligned in a number of ways by posters on here and labelled accordingly. If I lived in Clacton I wouldn’t vote reform. I didn’t vote in 2024. But to consider people who do to be “thick racists” explain why the left continually lose arguments and historically lose elections.

Same disagreement, but it goes well or badly depending on whether both sides assume good faith.

There's a real difference between two kinds of disagreement. Things like how much the state should do, or how to weigh up migration policy, are matters of values and judgement. People can look at the same facts and land in different places, and that's fine, that's what debate is for. But facts themselves aren't like that. If a claim is shown to be factually wrong, sticking with it anyway isn't a "different viewpoint" any more, it's just refusing to update. That's where discussion breaks down, and it's a fair thing to expect from anyone, whatever their politics.

Being labelled is the harder part. Losing an argument is one thing. Being assumed to hold views you don't actually hold is another, and it shuts things down fast. That happens on both sides, most people who argue politics online have been on the receiving end of it at some point.

For what it's worth, admitting your own bias rather than pretending you have none is exactly what makes for a better conversation. Not everyone will match that, but it's still worth doing.
