Transfers Ashton etc 17:05 - Jul 7 with 2086 viewsWeekender

Ashton gets a lot of stick on here regarding transfers, and there's a lot made of this famous "data dashboard." But do we really know for sure how much input he actually has in the process? No doubt he's heavily involved in negotiations, contracts, and the like. But when it comes to selecting actual targets, surely there's far more input from the recruitment team, scouts, coaches, the manager, etc. I feel like half the posters on here think Ashton himself is personally picking out the targets, and honestly, I doubt he has any meaningful input in that side of things at all these days. Maybe right at the start he had more influence, back when the club had no proper scouting or recruitment setup, but there have been dedicated people in those roles for years now.

I struggle to see Ashton stepping away from anything beyond the first team manager's role, while there is undoubtedly teams in place for this now I suspect he's still elbow deep.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Based on what evidence? Or simply your own personal agenda?

It has been mentioned before that Ashton was now less involved in transfers than before and Luke Werhun was leading most of the transfer activity nowadays.

This is my feelings (without evidence) too. I’d be very interested to know how ITFC is structured and who does what. Also, what is the owners’ involvement these days? It’s their money.

Ashton isn't first team manager mate.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Maybe in L1, he had some input, conversations or an opinion.

Now, absolutely not.

People hate on him for various reasons, but in terms of putting the right people in the right places to take Ipswich up a level, he's doing all the right things.

I don't think people realise just how much thought, process and effort goes into getting just one player for one position nowadays.

Shortlists go from thousands to maybe 100-500 players they may want to look at in more depth, then hundreds of hours on each one possibly, narrowing down, to scout them live, are they obtainable, then find out about them personally.

Our hardest task will always be, can we afford the ones we want and if we can, will they come here or have better offers.

Based on his position, he’ll be responsible for the structure and processes of the transfer side of things, leads the transfer team (or at least leads the senior managers in the transfer team, direction strategy) and will be ultimate responsible for their decisions and very likely has input at some stage on targets and/or sanctions them. So he’ll be pretty heavily involved.

It just seems strange how several signings have a bristol or west brom connection if he is not involved.

Do you really think so? He used to say that McKenna was very specific on his type of player so my expectation was that the type of players were identified by the first team management, the recruitment scouting team would do all the legwork and identifying candidates. the manager would choose preferences and then Ashton and others would set about trying to negotiate a deal. Surely Ashton’s role is to put the experts in the right positions but not to then try and do their job for them.

He’s the CEO/Chairman. Of course he’ll be choosing who’s in the transfer team and the senior people there will be reporting to him. He’s very likely to be consulted on progress at least weekly. I’m not saying he’s trawling through player databases himself, but he’s 100% responsible for how that transfer team looks and how they operate and ultimately the buck stops with him. That’s a fact based on his role.

I think he's a key component, overseeing it with Luke Werhun, but clearly some of the work is left up to the manager, hence McKenna's rejection of their striker list last season.

The thing about us lot and Ashton, is that there are those who will want to credit him for everything good, and those who want to blame him for everything that doesn't go well.

There is no way that he can have the time to be heavily involved in transfer business, but I'm sure he will need to have final sign off on anything that commits us to either a big fee or salary.

Ashton hires the recruitment team. Of course he's central to recruitment.

Hires the team but surely he doesn’t then seek to do their job. That’s the distinction

But Ashton shapes the team, so it's an extension of him. If he hires duds, or has the wrong research analyst selection criteria, then it's on him.

Surely, he is responsible for setting up the structures/departments of the club, subject to main Board approval since they pay for it?

After that, are not the people heading up those departments responsible for the work and the accountability of day to day running of the club sit with the CEO with him reporting to the Americans?

That a few years back was more or less how it was positioned (by MA if memory services me right). But I really don’t know, being clueless how football clubs operate. I cannot believe he gets too involved in day to day stuff. He obviously fronts up on stuff from hard hat and coffee cup to shaking hands with people, but is that different to the real world?

All guesswork on my part. I’d very much like to know how the club nuts and bolts operates these days - not guesswork like the above or conclusions based on hatred.
