Have modern Hollywood forgotten how to make good films? 11:08 - Jul 13 with 3069 viewsBelsteadCav

Christopher Nolan’s remake of The Odyssey has been getting ripped to bits on social media

Mainly because of the Armour and ships in the film.

The ships are Viking not Ancient Greek. And the amour looks like it’s Robin Hood knock off.

They have 100s of Greek amour in museums and a Greek war ship intact. Also once again a lot of the clips are dark, has he ever been to the Greek islands? They are absolutely stunning, colours everywhere.

Are they just getting lazy or do you think they honestly don’t care anymore

Disclaimer……. Please do not bring up the casting of the actors, that’s a different subject and not for this thread.

Its a film, if it was designed to be 100% accurate, none of them would be talking in English, but in ancient Greek.

And they'd all be Greek actors.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

"Getting lazy"?

I think you'll find Hollywood films have always taken massive liberties with historical accuracy. This isn't something new or even getting worse. Documentaries they 'aint.

Doesn't mean they can't be a good film still, you just have to let the blind spots go.

With the script written in Linear B.

I did Classical Greek at O-Level and we did go to see plays staged in the original Greek. An intersting experience, given we were nowhere near fluent enough to actually follow the dialogue.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Arguably sometimes there is benefit to not being too prescriptive. The point of Films isn't to be 100% historically authentic, but to drop us into these worlds and let us see an entertaining story. Sometimes some simplification or styling choices can improve a film without hurting the actual history behind it.

I'm not advocating for WW2 films to have giant mechanised Nazi robots, but it also doesn't really matter that they used an American M4A1 76W Sherman, but said it was actually a British Firefly Sherman.

Also worth pointing out that no one really minds when the historical inaccuracy aligns with our perceptions. Most people wouldn't blink at seeing a sparkling white Rome with loads of white stone and marble because that's what we expect. It's how the ruins look and it's how we built neoclassical buildings. However we know that Romans painted nearly all their buildings. They should be really bright and colourful not just white. However that doesn't align to how we imagine them.

apparently the film is very good from initial reports but this always tends to be people who have early access and get giddy that they have seen it before other people.

TBF, Nolan very rarely fails with his films. You might not like some of them but they are generally good films, i didn't love Dunkirk, but could see it was a good film.

To my shame i haven't seen Tenet, Oppenheimer yet, kids, work etc getting in the way of me watching films these days.

And you need to watch Tenet at least on once. I enjoy it the more I watch it but I'm really into time travel or films that mess around with tine

What does anything you've raised have to do with the quality of the film? Nolan himself said he didn't care to be 100% historically accurate, he cares far more about making an engaging film. It's not a documentary.

Nolan also specifically instructed the films composer to ban the use of traditional orchestra for the score, because "modern" instruments didn't exist in the Bronze Age, to maintain the authenticity he wanted with the film.

they ignore the synthesiser they used to layer the soundtrack of gongs, lyres and aulos together.

but which is it ? authentic or not authentic, a fictional movie universe or some clever reimagining of a Greek classic ?

and btw Nolans entire style, prior to this film, is about making films that are grounded in realism, and authenticity, now fine tough to pull off in a film with a cyclops, but is it any harder than the crazy dream worlds of Inception.

so to say the guy who actually rebuilt the Dunkirk mole, instead of faked it with cgi, tracked down actual ships used in the evacuation just to have them on screen used actual vintage planes for aerial shots, and who has collaborated with a theoretical scientist to render a scientifically accurate black hole, to the point I believe they actually published a scientifically peer reviewed paper on it, that now actually forms part of our understanding of black holes.

has just suddenly gone, nah it'll be fine, its just a popcorn movie to entertain...what have you done with the real Christopher Nolan ?

The answer is he can pick and choose because he has creative control. Genuinely don't understand how you could be mad over this.

As somewhat of an anorak on the era I have the same issues with Quadrophenia. Don’t get me going on Tom Harry’s unlimited ammo in Dunkirk, the ability to talk at normal volume on Omaha beach in The Longest Day, and of course , any film where a musket is firing with the distance and accuracy of it been fitted with a sniper sight. But, I’ve enjoyed them all. The 80’s interpretation of ‘Absolute Beginners’ however, was a travesty.

it's not a historical document, it's fiction. he can interpret it anyway he likes, homer's not alive to say it doesn't fit his vision.

social media will clutch their pearls as musk told them to, i'll wait for some more erudite reviewers!

I watched Interstellar for the first time yesterday, and thought it was magnificent.

Also, historical inaccuracies are nothing new. I refer you to the multitude of actors who have played Jesus who don't exactly look Middle Eastern.

Marvelous film …. Was aware of it for about a year before it came out in cinemas and was gutted I never saw it in one.

Rotten tomatoes 🍅 98% after a 100 or so reviews is very promising … of course it’ll drop a bit and it’ll be interesting to see how much of a hate campaign affects the audience score.
Not even the World Cup final should cause box office problems as the tickets globally sold out a year ago for this weekend.
