"Picky bits" 12:42 - Jul 13 with 1218 viewsZx1988

Since when did this seem to have become a formal category of food, and who decided that this would be the name for finger food/tapas/small plates?!

It just makes us sound like a bunch of toddlers, FFS.

Literally for decades. We always used to have picky bits in the garden back in the 80s. Wayyyy before tapas became a big thing on UK high streets and shopping centres

Or 'canapés'? Hell, I'd even be happy with 'nibbles' rather than the current name.

I like the term Short Eats from Sri Lanka.

It is quite accurate, I definitely get shorter per kilo, the more I eat.

That's a nice one. I also quite like the German term 'Knabberspaß', which literally translates to 'nibble/snack fun'.

'Picky bits' conjures up images of plates of beige, shoved in the oven from frozen at 200c for twenty mins, advertised by Kerry Katona, and usually accompanied by a prawn ring and food poisoning.

It's definitely not the whipped hummus, stuffed peppers, and sun-dried tomatoes that seem to bear the moniker these days.

Where did you hear it? I've heard nobody use that phrase ever in my life.

Do you (and maybe the responders whe HAVE heard it) live in an isolated place, with a vernacular all of its own?
