Are we underestimating our current squad? 13:17 - Jul 17 with 2377 viewsippy_land

Although I agree we need 8-10 new signing to upgrade the squad, there could be some names which surprise us in the prem and exceed our expectations. 5 players below which could surprise us and. W key parts of the squad (not mentioning Davis, O’Shea, Matusiwa who are expected to be in and around it already).

Jack Clarke (25)
- 2nd go in the prem with us, great output last year coming into to his prime years now at 25. Looks more physically built now to take the prem on and be a key part of the team. Like many will be much more settled into the group and ready to go from the start with a full pre season unlike last time.

Mehmeti (25)
- Really positive when he first joined, both off the ball as well as on the ball which will be really important this season. Clearly has a lot of quality in the goals and moments he has had in the championship and like many of our players will have a desperation to grab the opportunity in the prem with both hands.

Nunez (26)
- joined us with a desperation to play in the premier league. Clearly has ability on his day if he can put it all together in a league which may suit his style more than the grind of the championship to show his quality.

Greaves (25)
- £15m defender who has all the attributes to be successful and towards the end of last season was a big part on getting over the line. Typified with his performance at Norwich away. I think a back 3 could really benefit Greaves either being the central CB or LCB and bring the ball out. A player we expect to be much more settled going into this season and a bit under the radar.

Taylor (28)
- he always steps up and outperforms expectations. Went to a high level end of last season and every chance we could be ending the season with Taylor still getting minutes in the team. Feels like he has become a big character now as many of the back to back promotion side has moved on.

Any others we are not talking about who can step up?

I've doubts around Mehmeti, Nunez and Taylor. The issue isn't really if they are good enough for the Premier League the question is whether or not they are good enough to make an impact when coming on from the bench. As that's where most of those will be.

The lack of quality in depth on the bench contributed to our poor showing last time, and Taylor was part of that.

I've a lot of faith in Greaves, if he can find form, the Liverpool fans were waxing lyrical about him in our first game, and Clarke deserves the chance to prove himself at that level, but I have real doubts about the others to really make a difference in the Premier League.

I hope they prove me wrong.

If Jack Taylor gets even half the minutes this coming season that he got last season, we're in real trouble.

No I don't think so. Think those guys you have listed will all play a part, some more than others hopefully, but think most people in are in the same school of thought when it comes to how much we need this summer

Mehmeti - if he stays - will get about 30mins of PL football all season (if we make serious improvements)

If 3 or more of those are getting regular games this season we are in big trouble.

No, I think we know the current 1st XI is a bit short of the level.

What I do think a lot of people underestimate is the fact that if most of these players are squad players and not nailed on starters then there is no doubt the base depth and quality of the squad has improved markedly from when we played Liverpool at home last time.

I don't see Mehmeti, Nunez, Taylor getting minutes in any side that stays in the premier league.
I could see Greaves and Clarke making contributions and I might be the only one and I know there's not much evidence to support it but I also have a strange feeling that Kasey McAteer and SWE might surprise a few if they are still here/get a chance.

As I keep pointing out Brentford fans thought they required an entire new squad after promotion, afterall they only won promotion via the playoffs.
Even Toney they didn't think would be good enough, they had taken him from P'boro, and they were convinced they had sold their only PL forward, Watkins, in the Jan.
Their defence had shipped a few crazy goals in the championship.
Midfield wasn't strong enough etc.
It was Frank who decided they would go with 80% of the Championship squad, and improve the players.
Which they did.

Strongly agree. Same with Mehmeti he is a top half champ player at a push.

- Nunez is either going to be amazing or awful.
- I think Mehmeti has something to offer. Clever player with a good touch.
- Clarke needs to step up from a yo-yo prem/champ player. 50/50 for me.
- Greaves has the potential to be excellent.
- Taylor as squad is fine.

(based on them all being here this season)

I would think this is Clarke's last chance overall, if he even stays the full season.

After the disappointment of the last Prem season, in which people were hopeful the core of the double promotion team could succeed, driven on by squad spirit, a lot of the fans have swung hard the other way.

Perhaps it's because they didn't fall in love with the 2025-26 group like they did the 2022-24 one, but now none of our players are considered good enough, maybe one or two at best. It's now become excessively negative, babies and everything else being thrown out with the bathwater. There is too much fear.

A middle ground does exist. A lot more of our team have top flight experience now, or came with better pedigrees than those who came from League One. We can't obtain a squad of Man City supermen, nor do we need that to avoid relegation. We can strengthen the framework we already have, adding strength to the spine and in front of goal. But we will also need squad players and those who can sometimes tough it out, like they had to do in the Champ. Fresh legs who can come on and run at tired defenders.

I think a lot of people are underestimating - or undervaluing - our existing squad members.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Was a tough season with how teams set up, wil be a totally different challenge on the other side of it in the Prem where some players may excel.

I think a pre season together will make a massive difference and better players around them hopefully doesn’t mean the signings from last time need to be the stars and can play with more freedom.

Clarke is probably good enough. Greaves a decent back up.

Taylor top end championship player at best.

The way Mehmeti and Nunez finished the season … we’d be in big trouble if they started.

Clarke is in such a weird spot, he is to good for the championship but not good enough to step up.

Maybe he should do to foreign lands with Jaden and see if that does the trick like what's his name at Naples.

My ‘shock retention’ vote goes to Ogbene. He has been forgotten because of serious injury here and when on loan last year, but he has premier league experience, is lightning fast, makes defensive contributions as well as an attacking threat, and has had some really good appearances for Ireland recently, notably against Portugal. And he has scored already this year.😇

Massive season for Clarke really for his career. As at 25 he now coming into his prime years, and players peak at different ages and is a big opportunity to grab with us.

Grealish was 24/25 in his first season back in the Prem with Villa and was a bit of a late bloomer in that regard. Similar style player to Clarke if he can kick on this year (not saying he will reach those heights, just an example!)

Well with Jack Clarke if GON gets him to run up and down instead of inside and out that might be better for him.

In the PL when he got the ball he got it taken off him pretty much every time.

Something of the Huckerby’s for Clarke- a prolific Champuonship goalscorer and real danger, but yet to prove it in the Premier League, despite a few bites at the cherry.

Based purely on what I've seen, I'd categorically state no. Others may have and are very entitled to, their own opinions of course.
