You’re obviously right, but talk about damning with faint praise.., because they DID get a halo signing, and so did Leeds, and they also went on to use that to help them get another half a dozen REALLY talented players too, and are doing it again this window (Wilson is a staggering signing).
So why can playoff winners, spending the same as us do it, and many other clubs too, but we can’t?
We won’t have a clear halo signing or two. But we do have the resources for it, and having been in this division recently, and not being in the north east, would be an easier sell than Sunderland!!
So why can’t Ashton do it?

In normal circumstances a PL club would have a pretty good chance of signing a player from a newly relegated club, so it doesn’t seem unreasonable for people to think we may have had a chance. Bowen does seem one club man though which probably changes things a bit. |  |

I haven’t read your comments on Didz, but it wasn’t that he’s such an obvious talent, and so gifted, his control was sublime, it was that he was the complete opposite of Murphy running the channels - Didz dropping in.
For 14/15 statistically, eye ball test, any metric you like, they were not only the best pair in the championship, but one of the best ever at that level (that I’ve seen).
I think injuries were the problem here, and why he droooed down levels, but clearly had one hell of a third act, when most players with his money, wouldn’t have bothered, loves playing the game.
Huge respect for the guy, showed huge resilience in his career.
There were times he struggled a bit for us, mostly after injuries tho etc
14/15 - this won’t be popular (maybe) but that’s levels above a pairing we have now .., levels, and that’s worrying because we’re several levels higher now.
Those two at that level, they’d keep us in this league, I really think they’d thrive .., that season they both seemed to peak together. Murphy adding goals to the hard running.

I don't think it is a stretch to say that McGoldrick and Murphy are better than what we have now (Hirst and Akpom). But it is clear we are looking to strengthen there (Emmerson in and surely another to follow). Whether we can end up with much better than Murphy and McGoldrick were is the question. But if we end up with at least as good, don't forget McGoldrick was every bit a Premier League player with Sheffield United. We are not several levels above where we were when McGoldrick and Murphy were getting us to the Championship play offs. |  |

...having turned down an offer of £650k from Newcastle earlier that season.
To rub salt in the wound, Wednesday were relegated at the end of the next season. They then sold Atkinson for £1.9 million, which was more of a reflection of his true value.

That Murphy & McGoldrick partnership at its best was absolutely lethal, but everything after 14/15 for McGoldrick was sadly, just not befitting of a centre forward who was the highest paid player at the club…
2 goals in open play in 2015-16, I believe. 2,505 minutes played...
5 in 2016-17 in the 2,374 minutes played
and 6 in 2017-18, where he played 2,509 minutes.
Worth mentioning too that for a creative player, he also never really got a good number of assists either.

David McGoldrick’s natural talent and flair stood out during a time where our teams were decidedly workman like and lacking in excitement- so I do understand the reverence.
Ultimately, he was never the same after a live FA cup game on TV vs Southampton, where they very effectively showed teams how to nullify him, in January 2015?
Purple patch at the start of his Ipswich career aside, he consistently underperformed and no amount of nice touches, stopovers or little flicks make up for that for me personally.
Totally understand why others hold him in high regard though- just for me, he underperformed for the majority of his Ipswich Town career. [Post edited 18 Jul 17:36]
