Kane 07:25 - Jul 19 with 1475 viewsbsw72

Without doubt Kane is a world class goal scorer, but the game against France showed that the team has huge potential for goals without him playing, especially with Bellingham given more freedom.

It’s a bit of a conundrum facing Tuchel as we go into the Euros, as players like Kane can be a bit of a millstone round managers necks when they are off their game as they can always nick a goal or two as per DR Congo, so can hold back a manager from making changes. Imagine the kerfuffle had Tuchel taken off Kane on Weds to reshape the team and we had still lost, likely would have been more that’s he faced with the defensive shambles.

People still refer back to when Taylor took off Lineker in Euro ‘92.

Nonsense.

Southgate took Kane off multiple times at the last Euros, including in the final and against Switzerland, which is why he didn’t take a penalty.

Nobody cared and nobody mentioned it even when we lost to Spain.

It was blindingly obvious to anybody with a brain Kane needed to come off on Wednesday. Southgate would have done it at the water break.

EDIT: he also took him off against the Dutch in 2024 of course and brought on Watkins, who scored the last min winner.

I thought it was a genius move by Tuchel to rest Saka for the semi in order for him to be fresh fur last night’s game.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Suspect over the next few weeks there will be a number of leaks about what went wrong and how certain decisions were made.

Strong suspicion is he won’t make the euros.

Kane is a fantastic player when you're dominating a game, and a real weakness at International level when you're backs to the wall and need a mobile outlet.

Those two things can be simultaneously true, without wishing to upset anybody.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Are people seriously having opinions of the back of the game last night.

Just seen the highlights and the defending is awful for most goals and not a tackle in sight.

That’s probably my point, explained far more succinctly.

As brilliant as last night’s game was there was no chance France would have played like that if it were the final. At that level it’s very easy to look a world beater when given that much space.

Kane is a world class striker and should be our starting 9 however I agree at times he does need to be taken off for someone for a bit of pace.

You cannot judge anything on the game last, other than it involved two teams who really just wanted to knock the ball around but not put in heavy tackles to avoid injuries- but it was great entertainment.

Mrs Bloom said why didn't Bellingham run from the half way line like that against Argentina, I had to point out if he had tried it his legs would have been hacked away within 3 seconds of him starting the run. Mrs Bloom replied 'but the ref would then send the Argentinian player off', ooohhh how I laughed at that suggestion.

Anyway as has been mentioned by others Southgate often subbed Kane. Plus Weds issue was more about taking off the likes of Gordon for a defender. Put on Rashford instead and while I'm not saying we win, a Rashford with pace stretches them and then Kane might find space.

Kane was very poor against both Norway and Argentina. That was before last nights exhibition game.

I realise that last night was far more exhibition than even friendly but was interesting that with mental shackles off going forward how the different combinations created so much across the pitch to exploit the space, not just through a couple of players. Was refreshing and enjoyable and while what I type follows last nights game I’ve been thinking about the Kane conundrum for a while.

Yup, and my thoughts were not really based solely on last nights game, but have been there for a while. Too tired to frame them properly but I know what I mean .

It wasn't just the shackles, France wasn't interested in the 1st half. Look at the Rice goal, no way would he score that in the semi final, he would never be given that space, he basically passed it into the net. Lots of people raving about Bellingham's run from the half way line for his goal, in a game with meaning like a S/F his legs would have been taken way from him or barged off the ball for a free kick, way before he even saw the pen box.
When a player was fouled and went down a hand went out from opposition player to help them up. If that had been the Argie game, the Argie player would be screaming in the face of the fouled England player about them diving.
The defending was schoolboy level at best for nearly all 10 goals.

Although the result was probably helped that Olise got confused and thought he was playing for his country of birth and was defending balls into the box and clearing just to the side of the post, when it was easier to score.

Toney was incredibly poor last night even in the first half when the team were on fire.

Kane gets a brace last night. I understand why he didn't play but he would have weirdly made the game even more comfortable last night.

Watkins coming on left side for Rashford was an abysmal switch frommTuchel. Just complete madness. He was terrible and the worst of it was he kept forgetting he needed to defend. Watch the 3rd goal back (I think it was the 3rd). He stood winging for for not getting a freekick and had about a minute to get back into position. He didn't and they went down his side and then scored. When Watkins was then moved down the middle it immediately improved things again.

That decision cost us a much more routine win. Similarly Rogers over Saka in the semi is criminal. We beat Argentina with Gordon and Saka out wide.

All hindsight now but it was so obvious it's unreal.

Really enjoyed last night though!

Agree with your last paragraph completely.

Bringing on somebody who could run in behind also would have meant they couldn’t have been quite so cavalier in squeezing the entire last 40 mins of the game into our half.

I still can’t fathom it today 4 days on and I doubt TT can come back from this. His only saving grace is he has a contract that’s probably quite expensive to terminate. But there is no objective case for keeping him on on merit.

Glad he got booed last night too after trying to gaslight us all as well.

On that I’m sure we all agree but there is no issue with the fans nor the press in taking Kane off - we’re not Portugal.

And as mentioned, the last bloke, who is apparently the inferior coach, did it to great effect 2 years ago.

I think the first part of your sentence summed it up. "A world class striker" but even people like Kane can't score if you don't have the ball. Tuchel made a right mess of things against the Argies. Last night Rashford was taken off, whether injured or not I don't know.
Brought on Watkins who was responsible for the first French goal and continually lost possession. Why he didn't bring on Gordon who in my opinion had a superb world cup.

Maybe just giving people some game time, rather than doing what was best for the result on the day? E.g. Chalobah. Not saying it's right.

There's an upcoming problem for England to solve. No obvious replacement for HK. My thinking tends towards changing the style of play to encompass a false 9. When and if that starts will be up to management at the time of course.
