Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

As someone who has seen what he's done in Manchester, there's hope and a case that he if he can replicate that nationally he will do well.
He has decades of misrule and propaganda from the neo-liberals to undo, and it feels like he will be harshly treated from the getgo by the papers.
What he did here was started by others, but he took it and ran with it. Not all of Greater Manchester has felt the benefits, the city centre has had a lot of Chinese and Arab money pour in and with it lots of homogenous skyscraper type buildings go up. It's not for everyone and a bit of a compromise.
That said, having worked with people on various projects who know him and work with him closely, they spoke highly of him unprompted and honestly. Even things like "he promises to support everybody but gets too busy and overbooked so can't" was a memorable line from a friend of his.
The biggest problem is, he's going to try and disrupt a very deep rooted order, the money flowing into London and the surroundings has always kept the country imbalanced as far back as the last millenia or so. How you ensure that those with the least get what they need and the people who have grown wealthier in their place are ok with that is balancing act. I don't think he or anyone can manage it.
If he can cut through the noise and the bot attacks online he has a decent chance of impacting us all positively. He will be much more on the ground and shaking hands than Starmer ever could be, maybe that fundamental difference will give him some credit in the bank?
He will get the same treatment that anyone non right wing gets both from the media in this country, and the vociferous on here who feel it’s their part to sabre rattle.
That’s a given.
I’ll not pretend to have knowledge or investment in this, but it would just be nice to have a bit of stability and stop this revolving door nonsense that was introduced on the back of the brexit period and all the wronguns who visited that on the country.

Says the Tory boy who voted Labour in the last two elections and has said that Burnham needs more than just the three years left in this Parliament.
There are a lot of positives re Burnham. Not least that he is the only health secretary in history to privatise an NHS hospital. So at least he's prepared to think outside the box on the NHS and we may see our health service perform to similar levels to those of our friends in the Netherlands.

We'll just have to see how it pans out but you don't have to devolve powers to, say, allocate transport infrastructure fairly to the north.
The decision, for example, not to electrify the East Midlands main line is now coming home to roost with hybrid trains causing problems.
And I do wonder if what is happening in a dynamic city like Manchester (with top universities and the like) can be replicated through devolution in smaller towns and rural areas.
