Reprehensible to go on strike, maybe (altho such rights exist in many other workplaces). But there is an underlying issue in clubs attempting to force a player to move somewhere they don't want to, for pure financial gain. It is not slavery, after all. |  |

My initial thoughts were - do they only have one pitch? Couldn’t they just move elsewhere and leave him sulking like a toddler on a supermarket floor.
I understand players wanting to improve themselves and being ambitious - but I would be very sceptical of a player behaving like that in order to engineer a move. As, if he had a good season at my club he could well do exactly the same if a bigger club came in for him.
Granted I don’t know what happens behind the scenes but it’ll be funny if both the Italian and Turkish club wipe their hands of him. |  | | |

For any move, loan or permanent, to happen, a player has to agree & can refuse. Players can be "frozen out" & made to train with the youths. Footballers earning PL wages are not "slaves". | |

The definition of slavery is not only about money earnt, but also absence of coercion and freedom of will with regard to employer or work.
On the surface, looks like Wolves are trying to force him to go somewhere he doesn't want to, because the deal is better for them. On the other hand, it is possible he is working with the Italian club to strongarm a deal to their advantage instead.

I don't think they are allowed to be frozen out and train with the youths. Which again to be fair makes sense. It wouldn't be deemed acceptable in any other industry and would be some form of constructive dismissal. But of course the clubs don't want their assets to walk away for nothing, just to force through moves to the highest bidder.
I get that players can and are dicks, completely, but it's pretty crazy when you actually think about an individual and compare it to other industries. Being effectively forced to move yourself and your family and life to a completely different country than you want to by your employer when there is another employer exactly where you want to be and they block you from doing it.
Clearly football and sport is unique and I don't know what the answer is, but basic employee rights cut both ways. If he honoured his contract off the back of a poor season and did a Raheem Stirling he'd get sh1t for that too. Wolves want him out but don't necessarily hold all the cards to dictate where. Indeed, being a pro footballer is a transient occupation, but the compensation is that, at the top level, you get paid eye-watering sums of money & the clubs have to keep paying you as long as you turn up. It isn't really comparable to normal employer-employee codes, especially as players (or, technically, their registrations) can be hugely valuable assets. | |
