Maeda, OShea, Fatuwa, Matusiwa, Diop, Davis…. Made for much vaunted 3-4-2-1? 19:28 - Jul 26 with 2674 viewsunstableblue

I’m liking the growing suggestion that we’ll play a back 3 with wing backs, and two attackers more central behind the striker, tucked in. But with the idea we can drop into a back 4 as the wing backs join the attack and the wide overload.

And seeing OShea coming on in the Cartagena friendly, not only did he look head and shoulders above anyone else in terms of quality, but he was running/pushing forward on the right side with energy. Reminding that he can play full back well for Ireland.

So he’d be great as a right sided CB in a three. With Diop giving they solid holding role with height.

Maeda and Fatuwa can suit that more central role behind the striker, and that probably suits Egeli more than the 3 behind the striker. And also Burns.

What we really need now is a box to box attacking central mid - number 8 - who can move the team quickly up the pitch. And a striker who can hold and finish.

So something like this:

——-——— Scherpen
———-OShea—Diop—XX——
XX————Matusiwa—XX———-Davis
———-Fatawu————-Maeda
——————-XX

It’s a bit scary when you see it laid out and you realise how many gaps there are (especially once you include the depth needed).

I’m not sure I can find myself getting excited about 3 CBs at the back. Maybe it’ll work, maybe not. Not many teams use it these days. It potentially pulls those CBs all over the place if the WBs bomb on a lot. If not it means we lack width in attack. We’ll see. There must be a reason why it’s not much of a thing any more?

Hey Swansea,

Yeah I’m surprising myself that I’m positive towards 3 centre backs. I always want Town to play on the front foot, with higher possession at home, even in the Premier League. And a back 5 smacks of sitting deep and soaking up pressure.

Also 3 centre backs doesn’t seem to be that popular a system as you say.

I hope ours is a flexible set-up, and OShea becomes a right back during games. We shall see.

But we’re going to have to do something different to have any chance in the Premier League. We got smashed often last time round.

But what’s for sure is that we need 4 more XXs filled (at least) with serious quality.

Good points. I reckon we were all scarred by seeing teams exploit our left side last time with Leif bombing on and not much of a mobile midfield or CB to cover. In that regard, we certainly need to be better.

3 can be very negative as you say if it turns into a perpetual 5. That’s my main worry that it blunts us offensively. Without seeing these new players or how we’re setting up it’s impossible to know though isn’t it.

For some reason I’ve got it in my head that KM going (GON more savvy) and these new signings have boosted our chances of staying up. I’m reasonably optimistic.

Not sure yet how confident I am for the season ahead and our survival.

McKenna did fail to adapt to the Prem, and in some ways the Championship. But O’Neil did have a bit of a horror show ending at Molineux. Hopefully that was about dressing room culture, something not at Portman Road with senior squad members.

I do think if we can continue to bring these higher level players we’ll give ourselves a chance. We essentially had Al Hamadi as our back up striker and we now have Emmerson. Maeda back up by Clarke/Philogen and Fatawu backed up by Burns/Egeli is a step up.

Yeah if this is the formation I can't see us signing another RWB when we have four (Ogbene being the other one!). It does put pressure on the recruitment team to beef up CM very quickly though. And I would still like a better second striker option than Hirst... beyond that though, another CB and we'd be pretty well set I think?

Picking up you and SouperJims points

I would agree Greaves is probably not far off securing that left centre back role.

But for me we definitely need a main striker, with Emmerson as second option.

And as for right wing back… I think only burns and perhaps McAteer could translate back to that role, but furlong the closest we have now. So its definitely a position to strengthen.

We had Hirst and Al-Hamadi off the bench last time and haven't really moved on from that yet? I'm optimistic that's not where we'll be come window's close but essentially it's Emersonn replacing Delap for now. Maybe swap Al-Hamadi for Akpom too.

Bringing in that higher profile striker felt the chief aim two years ago but he eluded us. Perhaps I'm too cautious about the notion of tempting fate aha.

I think the squad is being built with the option of playing 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 - whether from the start or changing mid match. My guess is away or against top teams at home, we start 3-4-2-1 but play 4-2-3-1 for the games we perceive the opposition are not quite as dangerous. 4-2-3-1 allows us to get Philogene or Clarke plus Maeda and Fatawu on the pitch with our #9 and if we get a lead, we can switch to 3-4-2-1. Whereas the more defensive line up doesn't get Philogene or Clarke on (but sees Leif bombing forward more).

There were a few 3 CB setups in the PL last season. Crystal Palace (Munoz and Mitchell as wing backs, Riad, Lacroix and Canvot as the CBs) and Leeds United (Justin and Bogle as WBs, Struijk, Bijol and Rodon as the CBs).

It then a case of who else leaves. If Jaden / Hirst you have space for an additional CM or Striker.

I love the optimism that we will be playing a 3-4-2-1 whereas I think reality will lead it to being a 5-4-1 with an occasional full-backs attacking down a flank so maybe a fleeting 4-4-1-1.

We did offer €30m for Khalali, who chose to go to Inter Milan, before the Italian medical guidelines ruled him out of that move. He is very much an attacking wing back type, in a similar way perhaps to how Leif Davis does his best work in attacking at pace & delivery, over actual defensive duties.
It would be difficult to see us looking to play a 5-4-1, as opposed to a 3-4-2-1, with those two (or the intention of those two) in the starting XI.
