After our last PL campaign, it seemed like the majority on here wanted him to stay at Town but accepted that he wouldn’t after our relegation. One year on and after an unsuccessful season at Chelsea, reading the recent posts about him on here, it seems like the majority don’t want him back this season.
I have to say I don’t want him to return either. He looked like a partially sighted raging bull when I watched Chelsea last season, charging aimlessly around the pitch taking out opponents. Maybe his success with us was down to McKenna and our coaching staff but he has regressed significantly since then and we need far better this season.
‘Never go back’ is my motto as the second time is seldom as good as you remember the first time. |  |

They dont look to have even tried to develop hom do they. I feel sorry for him tbh. They've just stuck him up front and yiu can see they've told him " stay there" . The game just went on all around him. You're perfectly right then you say his game with us was running at defenders ,where he relied on his raw pace to get past them and get that ferocious shot off. It was exciting to watch a young player do this. He reminded me of a young Kevin Beattie in that tbh. The problem is in the PL you need much more to your game than just that, and im honestly not sure Delap has that in his locker. His next move is critical and he needs to get the club right.
Although im not in favour of his return, in many ways playing under GON and the likely style / tactic hes going to use, Delap could be ideal. But PL defenders are just as quick, if not quicker than him, so would his attacking style really work? Im.not sure. |

There's a third club where I wouldn't want to be as a young player, alongside Chelsea and Manchester United, and that's Manchester City, and Delap's been at two of the three. I think he would have been better off spending last season with us, learning the game at a lower level, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Why wouldn't he want to stay in the Premier League and try for a World Cup place?
If McKenna was still here I'd be calling for him to return. My one doubt is is O'Neil the right manager for him. His next choice could make or break his career, from recovery to becoming a journeyman where he moves from club to club, with each hoping they can refind the spark. I hope the right team gives Chelsea what they want, because they don't and won't care about his future. |  |

He has proven premier league experience. He had a season with us when he was the stand out player in a poor team. He also had some PL experience last season.
His wages are now beyond us as others have pointed out, even if we could get him for circa £25 million. That's peanuts for a centre forward with "proven PL experience" in today's ridiculously inflated market. Who do you suggest would fit that criteria, is available and could be persuaded to come to us? | | | |

Can you give me one name, a realistic target that would give us as much up front as Delap did in 24-25? If you’re expecting as good, let alone better than what he gave, you’re going to be very disappointed. He had a poor first season at Chelsea but you don’t get pretty much every premier league club and plenty of top European clubs wanting you to sign unless you’re an elite level footballer. I wouldn't be averse, but get the impression Ashton wasn't impressed with his behavior towards the end and wages would be a huge stumbling block.
He also played the other night against Western Sydney, didn't do much, came off for Pedro who subsequently bagged a 9 minute hat-trick. |  |

Delaps Chelsea career is 28 appearances of which only 12 were starts,His his not really been given much of a chance to get into his stride also not helped by injuries. His biggest mistake was going to Chelsea to soon and now he has the issue that he has a very long lucrative contract but wont play, so do you take a pay cut or waste you career away! | | | |

We've just paid £24m + add-ons for a striker that has scored 8 career goals across two worse leagues and is only a year younger than Delap.
Delap was excellent for us in 24/25 and scored 12 PL goals. He was raw at times but truly outstanding in several games. He got swallowed up by a Chelsea machine that has swallowed up quite a few players in recent years. Anyone turning their nose up at him is a bit daft IMO. Suspect he will end up with bigger fish to fry than us this summer though unfortunately. | | | |

Shocked if that's true. Chelsea famously give incentive based contracts under Blue Co. and pay significantly smaller basics than they have historically.

I wouldn't think he's regressed, I suspect he's just at a bigger goldfish bowl with higher standards and expectations of their number 9. There's also the chance he's never quite been ready for that level, he had a good 6 months with us where he's scored some goals and looked a handful, but for a guy with 150 appearances under his belt, the 20 or so in that purple patch with us look to be the exception rather than the norm at this stage.
FWIW I think he's a decent player, perhaps not Chelsea #9 quality, but he's decent. I'd have him back, he'd start for us in the 9 and would strengthen us, but I can't see it happening. |  | | |

OK, sorry, I was being a little facetious, but I will counter your point of him carrying the rest of the team with how many more goals would we have scored if he hadn't been so selfish? Also I honestly believe that he got away with not being sent off quite often, which would have made us look even worse.
A Chelsea fan friend of mine messaged me when they bought him, and I messaged him back saying I really didn't think he was worth the money, I think he may agree with me now. I really hope I'm wrong and Delap goes on to be a great striker, because it would be fantastic for England in the long run, but I just don't see it in him.
