Absolutely mad isn't it? Money isn't everything but it is a hell of an advantage and when you have $1bn+ you basically have a book of cheat codes for almost everything in life. Yet that isn't enough for them. They can live anywhere. Travel anywhere in privacy and luxury. Do virtually anything. Their power is immense. The world is literally their playground. Yet they want to live in a crap little project city which will never take off because none of them want to pay for anything.
It just makes no sense to me. Anyone with $1bn+ could live a life of obscene luxury, pay a fair share of tax AND make the world a better place. How the hell can anyone with that level of wealth wake up and not thinking today I want to change 100 lives? Today I want to donate enough money to feed 10,000 kids. Today I want to save a community centre or space telescope from shutting down. Today I want to buy a homeless person a house, or send 100 kids to university etc etc.
Elon Musk could go down in history as one of the greatest humans who has ever lived. He could single-handedly change the planet. Put a huge bounty on cancer and other diseases and fund a huge amount of research.
If I won £50m on Euromillions I would keep £10m (more money than anyone ever needs), give £30m to family and friends and set up a charity with £10m invested to bring in £500k a year. Then my 'job' would be to use £10k a week to improve the world. Even that relatively small amount could do so much good. Musk could do £500bn. "Oh but his assets aren't liquid". lol. |  | | |

My point was in relation to the whole crux of the wider thread, which was discussing Gary Stevenson’s proposed tax on wealth >10m - in the UK.
Which, as laid bare for all to see in the documentary, isn’t a very sensible idea.

I wasn’t aiming anything at you specifically, I can’t remember who’s said what on here other than there’s often a lot of pushback in general whenever the issue of taxing the rich pops up.
As a general point, I don’t think people often realise who ‘the rich’ are in this context. We’re talking about people like this and people worth tens or hundreds of millions who don’t draw salaries. If someone’s being paid a £1M a year as a salary through PAYE they’re paying a tonne of tax; they’re contributing. It’s those who have structured their wealth in such a way that they’re avoiding tax, hoarding assets and are using their wealth to influence politics that I have an issue with.
So yes, certainly we’re in agreement on tech-bros and similar. | |

I would just say though, given this is pretty much my day to day, I just don't think there's as many (legal) schemes out there as you think that mean you pay next to no tax - in the uk, if you receive income or make capital gains, you pay tax regardless of what structures it’s in ex ISAs etc.
I think the government's own figures say that ~0.8bn pa "only" is lost to tax avoidance. It's not going to make a dent in terms of the wider issues at play here.

While staggering, almost all of that is explained by a parabolic move in US technology stocks over the last 15 years and CEOs of said companies owning millions of stock in their own company.
So it's not money sat around in a bank account or thousands of houses around the globe where their wealth lies - it's the value of the stock they own in their own company, which for the most part they can't sell.
Far more concerning is their ability to gain political influence and own communication platforms like X. That and creating apps and platforms they would never let their own kids touch but are happy to export to the rest of us. | | | |

He’s a contrarian, and dishonest, to be frank he doesn’t even come across particularly bright. He starts off talking about AI taking most jobs in 10 years (his track record on self driving cars, space travel etc were miles off).
Then moves on to talking about Europe being overrun with immigration and crime, despite admitting he hadn’t visited in years. When it’s pointed out that statistically European cities are far safer than US ones he just simply says “I don’t believe that”. Delusional. | | | |

I think they treat it like a normal person would a video game. It's just the 'high score' on the arcade machine. Bragging rights, an ego boost. They are never going to have to worry about affording anything they want (never mind anything they actually need), so the money/wealth takes on a different quality to that of the normal working person's money.
