This “3 at the back thing”… 17:29 - Jul 29 with 1039 viewsWallingford_Boy

A) Where did it come from? Didn’t GON say his favoured line up is 4-2-3-1?

B) Haven’t we been playing 3 at the back for years when in possession? Leif pushing on and the RB joining the 2 x CBs?

RIP Sir Bobby

Both fair points, and tend to agree.

Think however, we may need to go more defensively against the bigger teams, rather than 3 centre back's every game.

I've said before, under McKenna, we have played 5 at the back, 4 at the back, 3 at the back and 2 at the back.

Probably because Diop is a right sided central defender and hasn't come to the club from Fulham to be back up for Dara O'Shea. If they both play then it will be in a back 3.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Which is pretty much what O'Neil said, along with the fact that he prefers 4-2-3-1

Yes to B but not when defending when it was a 4. And in a back 3 can be more like a 5 with the wing backs coming back.

Or Dara plays the defensive RB role in a back 4 that Tuanzabe and then Furlong played. He’s quick and not bad going forward, could see him doing really well there in the Prem.

People get very excited about the “formation” but it’s so fluid depending on the situation and players selected.

McKenna rarely got credit for the way his sides were fluid and positions were interchangeable depending on who was picked and how the game was going. I used to get quite frustrated by those who claimed KM was inflexible.

Hey ho, I’ll wait for the same to be levelled at GON as the season goes on.

prefers 4 2 3 1 but knows we can't play that against certain teams at certain places

So when we play man city we won't be playing it, but at home v hull we probably will
