Astonishing, when the initial media report was 'hundreds'

https://www.theguardian.com/wo

And with Italy calling for the suspension Schengen Area with Spain too

what is there to suggest any action by israel or that "israel may have had something to do with this"? there are vaguely tangential smears and extremely contorted logic that israel at some very obscure level. nothing else. it's just the usual unevidenced conspiracy nonsense.

What's confusing me this morning is that the BBC are still reporting this event and it's fall out without mentioning that pretty much everyone has been returned.

You are just a horrid, twisted little man who throws anti-semitism at anyone who points out Israel might be doing something bad.

I’ve literally shown the detail which appears to show Israel encouraging certain behaviours or actions.

As I said before and others have told you, that isn’t anti-semitism, it is holding people to account.

How odd. Blueschev raised this first and didn’t get abuse from you or the downvotes I revived.

Implying that Israel is somehow engineering mass immigration in to Europe is a classic case of antisemitism. It's levelled against Israel because Israel is a Jewish state, and it is an old fashioned Jewish conspiracy theory. I'm no fan of Israel, but the origins of such a theory are pretty obvious.

I’ll leave you to it.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

The same is true of much of the papers, even though they went to press after the return.

none of that is evidence of anything. the son (who cares about the son) is clearly criticising spain's hypocrisy, nothing more. the opinion piece linked is talking about diplomacy. this is all nonsense and conflation. evidence of russia's wrong doing is very well documented - it isn't just wishful thinking and the wilful twisting of two insignificant online links. this is a cil level of mid-wittery.

It's the headline that counts though, and how many glancing at the main headlines on BBC News online will even click on, let alone read, the whole article?

Maybe the BBC don't have the sub-editors anymore to change the headline, but when it comes to some of the papers, a headline such as this merely fits their agenda.

Interestingly, the BBC headline even mentions 60,000 people when most reports I've seen mention 50,000.

He's not wrong!

"The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has hit back at some EU countries for what he described as their “selfish, polarising and illegal reaction” to the mass border crossings at Ceuta, as he thanked Morocco for its help in dealing with the crisis.

In a letter to Brussels, he said several European states have chosen to “attack” Spain and request its temporary exclusion from the Schengen area, driven by “prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interests” that is contrary to European law, humanitarian law and the principles of EU solidarity, the Spanish El Pais newspaper reported.

Sánchez argued that in less than 48 hours, his government managed to “fully restore control of the border, provide extensive humanitarian assistance, return virtually all migrants who crossed irregularly and prevent any unauthorised movement towards continental Europe”.

“All of this has been achieved in close coordination with the Moroccan authorities and with very little support from other European states,” he added.

He called for an emergency meeting of EU interior ministers “as a matter of urgency”."

And interestingly, Spain has a returns agreement with Morocco.

Trump's reaction yesterday...

“You know I saw Spain yesterday, and I watched the catastrophe that took place. It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people,” Trump said. “And that same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected. Except worse, much bigger.”

It's little surprise that a lot of people here are talking about outside influences and at the very least highlighting those trying to benefit from a situation that ended up with everyone going home within 48 hours except the 57 or so who drowned.

The Spanish PM has stood out as one with sufficient honour and integrity to fully call out a genocidal Israeli regime rather than the pathetic response of the rest of W Europe. He also called out Trump more directly than other leaders.
Then this happens.
Someone must be behind it somewhere.
To drag up anti semitism is ridiculous.
If Israel stopped killing thousands of people and denying basic rights to people maybe they wouldn't get all this criticism and accusation.

So I’ve posted links by respected political analysts who say there ‘may’ be something else going on with evidenced links back to Israel.

The US Secretary of State is on record pushing a narrative against Spain and pro-Morocco on Cueta.

You just keep saying - no it’s a conspiracy.

Post evidence to the contrary then.

Oh and I’d love to know my fantasy political reasoning 😂

We had the same problem with the early stages of Israel’s response to the horrific 7th October attacks by Hamas. For months while Israel were killing civilians by the tens of thousands there were a lot of people very quick to call antisemitism whenever anyone criticised Israel’s response. It must have been about 15 months or so before the wider realisation set in that Netanyahu’s government were indeed committing war crimes and could be freely criticised. It took the ICC issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Gallant in the winter of 2024 before it became acceptable to mention the G word and the mood shifted. And this was right to the top including how politicians were responding, echoing all the way through our national conversation.

There seems to be multiple lines of evidence suggesting that some in the Israel regime have been threatening or fantasising about such an incident that we saw yesterday. The only thing I’d add is that doesn’t mean they were involved. It could easily be just Morocco or the US or all three of them in some way. Or none. Yet if people can postulate that it could have been a political move by Morocco or the US, I don’t see why Israel is exempt from also being part of that discussion based on what people from the Israel regime have been posting/saying.

Quite. The Israeli ambassador to the UN today called for the return of Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco. Now that's a whole different debate in itself but a bit rich coming from a country currently occupying two countries in the region.

Yes, a bit rich!

I find it (antisemitism) a really tricky issue to navigate, as people should be able to call out antisemitism where they see it. So I’m really nervous of challenging anything where I think people may be over-zealous in accusations of antisemitism. But surely it’s relevant questioning Israel’s motives here when we have statements like the one you’ve just mentioned?

On the other hand we have to be mindful of the backdrop of antisemitism here in the UK. This report released this week really highlights the problem we have now in the UK with antisemitism; it’s shameful: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

There's a debate to be had over who or what was behind the events of the last two days. That debate is naturally going to include countries that have publicly threatened Spain or have longstanding grievances. You can't just shut down the debate by claiming anti-Semitism.

Netanyahu accused Pedro Sanchez of anti- Semitism when he spoke out against Israel and genocide in Palestine. All it does is belittle and ignore real instances, much like it does calling people fascists, islamaphobes or whatever when trying to shut down debate.

now try to remember, what you were quoting approvingly was a claim that this was "a long-term 'plot' by Israel to destabilise certain countries". do you remember?

but, what you're linking now is completely unrelated to israel, and is irrelevant to your original fantasy claim.

the only thing approaching a decision in what you have linked is: "the committee supports efforts by the secretary of state to encourage diplomatic engagement between morocco and spain on the future status of ceuta and melilla."

so even your link doesn't support the claim in the tweet or the conspiracy stuff you are trying to insinuate.

you're getting pretty desperate

Speaking of debate, here's an article that brings together a lot of what's been discussed here, except those trying to shut down any debate of course.

It covers a lot of what is being discussed in Spain at the moment.

And it’s not the first time this particular poster has engaged in antisemitic conspires on this forum. Not long ago it was the puppeteer trope. Twice.

I’ve only just seen this today but somebody posted this as abuse yesterday, which would have brought the post to Phil’s attention. Whether posting an antisemitic conspiracy theory is abuse or not is legitimate debate. But I’m appalled that Phil has seen this and left an antisemitic conspiracy theory to remain on the board.
