Midfield Recruitment 16:30 - Jul 31 with 3667 viewsLibero

really let us down last time around when we were in the Premier League, and while I'm rather happy with the rest of our business, I am a little concerned we once again appear the be neglecting the middle of the park.

Great to see Luis linked, but we need two, maybe even three robust midfielders in, preferably with Premier League experience-
Azor and Marcelino are options, but we're going to need better than them if we want to stay up and I really do not want to see Jack-bloody-Taylor playing in the Premier League again.

£20m plus, at least for one of them.

It's a vital position (along with striker). Worth spending big on.

We’ll probably need to spend considerable more than £20M on at least one - CM is considered the most difficult / costly position to fill with good PL capable players right now. I’ll not be surprised to see us break £30M (or a loan for someone in that price bracket).

The position is crucial, but also hard & expensive to fill.

Yes Keiran obviously knew what he was doing that's why he was desperate to sign Hackney whatever the cost as he feared our midfield was not good enough for the Championship! No improvement since .

All a bit bored with the pinkun are you, with your team going nowhere I am guessing, with the rubbish you are sprouting on here ?

Can you point to me anywhere that anyone has said Taylor should be first choice in the Premier League?

The negative comments are towards the disdainful tone.

Taylor will be a better player for his experience. If he is needed as a squad player, we could do worse. Of course McKenna wanted to improve the squad and of course O'Neil does too. It's just the tone that is being criticised. Personally I will support our team even if we field a fourth choice player who is clearly out of his depth because we haven't got anyone better available.

We only loaned in Phillips and Cajuste. The biggest issue was the players who were here and under contract already, Morsy and Luongo. They shouldn't have been anywhere near a Premier league squad. Taylor has improved over his time with us. I hope we bring at least 2 CM's in now. Keep Taylor at the club for now and maybe look to change him in January. We can't change everyone in the squad at the same time.

First game of the season is must win, now I’ve heard it all!!

The next games are Liverpool and Man U, so probably need to win one as we won't win that many.

Are you new to football, if so, the premier league is quite hard so you know.

It looks like Sasa Lukic from Fulham is happening, so that should be the first part of the midfield rebuild. I also see that Fulham themselves are looking to bring in Jordan James, who West Ham had been pushing for. He is one that I thought we might consider as he was excellent anytime I saw him playing for Leicester last season & was up there for me, just behind Hackney & Fatawu as outstanding Championship players who could step up.

Poll: If we go up, which new striker would you like us to sign?

I doubt we’re neglecting it.

We’ve been linked with 2 CM’s this week in Lukic & Luis, & they obviously won’t be the only ones on the list.

I think we all need to see what happens before anyone can really say anything

" I doubt we're neglecting it"

Not saying anything specific about your comment, other than that line is similar to last summer and the one before where we don't fill the roles we needed

" We know they would have tried"

I absolutely 100% get the thoughts behind those types of comments, but this is the big league, we've spent a lot of money on bridging gaps behind the scenes, spent lots of money on the squad over the past few years to bridge the playing field too

But going through window after window saying things like the club have tried, imo just sounds a bit fluffy.

Of course they would be trying, but trying is the minimum requirements.

Managers get sacked if the team don't perform. Yet when we fail to fill certain positions, we get " well at least they tried"

As i say though we do have time, I will be surprised if we have a good start to the season, I just don't see it. Going into two friendlies today without our future midfield starting in it, just doesn't feel like a team that's going to be ready in just 3 weeks time.

Panic stations no, but the longer the wait goes on for CMs the harder that season start is going to be.

I have been surprised by the slow pace of recruitment for the middle of the park, especially with GON likely lined up weeks before KMc departure.

Happy with the other signings, but central areas, which have previously been integral to GON’s tactics, we seem extremely light and short of quality, even more so with Matusiwa out for pre season and Taylor likely off.

Cue Billing, Lewis Cook or Lemina’s arrival

I think every Town fan would agree with this absolutely ridiculous that 3 weeks before the start of a premier league season and we have no fit midfield to speak of . Our new manager must be tearing his hair out .

I think you (and seemingly the majority) are being very kind to Jack Taylor - he isn't a bad player, he just shouldn't be anywhere near our premier league squad.

It's not even that we're short of quality, I think we're just short of numbers period!

I appreciate, I'm in th minority discounting Taylor, but similarly, I've seen people seriously suggesting Humphreys as an option?

In reality, Nunez and Azor are the only legitimate central midfield options we have at the club right now to start in the middle of the park for a Premier League campaign.

We need men in, in this position and we need them 2 weeks ago.

I think we have to go into that Sunderland at full pelt, anything less than 3 points is not enough as that is a game we must win, if the assignment is to stay up.

Wow these types of posts starting before a ball is kicked is amazing. So you're saying if we don't win then the season is a right off? Given you've gone this early to say it's a must win. My days.

Lukic is a very good start, but considering it is *the* area of the pitch that we were really shown to be lacking in quality in, in the Premier League, I'm surprised we haven't addressed it faster.

I don't think it's being neglected- it's just that if we don't get a minimum of two in before the season starts, we're going to be playing a dicey game, IMO.

Azor did an incredible amount of heavy lifting and I think it's no coincidence that when he wasn't at 100%, the team wasn't.

Buddy, I’m emphasising your ability to recognise quality. You posted that our midfield wasn’t good enough for the Championship, hence we went after Hackney. Yet that midfield got us promoted. It certainly wont keep us up but let’s panic after the window closes if we haven’t got in sufficient reinforcements, maybe watching Town and football in general for as long as you say might have taught you patience.

I think it's fair to want to have players in such a crucial role in place well advance of the first Premier League game, personally.

I’m not quite sure why you have got so many down votes here. Anyone with a tiny bit of sense can see we are woefully short in the middle of the pitch. We need at least 3 I think to stand a chance. We also need an experienced striker or we are going to struggle so so badly.
