| Midfield Recruitment 16:30 - Jul 31 with 8746 views | Libero | really let us down last time around when we were in the Premier League, and while I'm rather happy with the rest of our business, I am a little concerned we once again appear the be neglecting the middle of the park. Great to see Luis linked, but we need two, maybe even three robust midfielders in, preferably with Premier League experience- Azor and Marcelino are options, but we're going to need better than them if we want to stay up and I really do not want to see Jack-bloody-Taylor playing in the Premier League again. | | | | |

| Midfield Recruitment on 09:59 - Aug 1 by E_I_E_I_E_I_O | Wow these types of posts starting before a ball is kicked is amazing. So you're saying if we don't win then the season is a right off? Given you've gone this early to say it's a must win. My days. |
I am saying Sunderland is a game we can get something out of bearing in mind the next games include Man U and Liverpool. Last time we were woeful, getting 3 points on the board for the first game might be the last 3 points we get until end of October when we play Forest and Hull. The games are too difficult, 3 weeks out from the first game we don't have a team / squad that can handle this step up, at this time. Your expectations may differ from mine this time round, last time it felt like a bit of a day out seeing new grounds for years or at all, this time I want them to give it a proper go and stay in the league by hook or by crook, going down is not an option. That's where I am at with it right now anyway, as always it is different strokes for different folks!

ashton out? | |

| Midfield Recruitment on 15:03 - Aug 1 with 1478 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | “Preferably with Premier League experience” I keep hearing this line constantly, here, EADT or Blue Monday and it’s a bit annoying. The Lukic signing would be decent and has played a lot at the level but it will be a 4+ year deal for someone who is about to turn 30 on very high wages. He does make us instantly better of course. But do we think Leeds’s looked at Stach last year who was 26 and thought, nah, isn’t proven in the PL let’s not bother. Thats surely the recruitment teams job. We need some better int players unearthed who could be here longer term and find their way to be a good PL player. We seem to be relying on other clubs to do it for us and buy them later. They clearly are out there, clubs have proven it. Even Southampton a level down with the likes of Jander last season. Need some more of this mixed in. Seems to be ether very young projects abroad or older heads that have played in England. I don’t necessarily hate it but I’d like to see some more players that are of the mid twenties ilk and playing in the top leagues looked at. That’s where Leeds and Sunderland thrived. Agree but should be no where near a Prem squad. | |

| Midfield Recruitment on 18:30 - Jul 31 by Wickets | Normally I would very much agree with you but after such a disaster of a season in the Premier last time I really think it's imperative to get points on the board early , if not confidence from the fans and the players will soon slip away . For me anyone being realistic can see we are struggling to get our midfield targets. I am now worried as I still live in hope we can establish ourselves as a Premier league team but out seemingly amateur recruitment seems to be letting us down . Seems a very long time ago Ashton told us we are better equipped this time but as yet we are repeating our midfield mistakes. I desperately hope I'm wrong and will be giving the players my full support however difficult it becomes. |
Think disaster is OTT personally. Yes the season fizzled out but there were a lot of what if/fine margin moments that went against us, which could have easily turned our season. Yes it would be nice to get off to a good start and on paper Sunderland isnt the worst opening game to have, but to think it’s must win feels a bit bonkers tbh

Really ? Crikey. I’ve seen a lot worse on here than that about players and other posters. To be honest what you said was mild compared to some comments I’ve seen over the years on here.

No doubt the same people who would say we Shouldn’t keep players for sentiment! Perfectly fine to call the club out on midfield we’ve needed a better midfield for years and other than Azor we’ve seen nothing. I think he’ll be good next season by the way. Yes we may bring some CMs in but at least one should have been in already

He dropped Cajuste but kept Taylor however you probably know best.

Can't speak for others, but I downvoted the idea that we're "neglecting the middle of the park", like we're deliberately not bothering strengthening there.

"we’ve needed a better midfield for years and other than Azor we’ve seen nothing" We've won promotion in 3 of the last 4 years. What are you talking about?!

For me, McKenna worked wonders considering our lack of depth and strength in central midfield during his tenure. For all the claims about the defence not being good enough, the number of times we were played through across the four full seasons was concerning (albeit more understandable during 23/24 and definitely 24/25). The defence was left exposed time and again. In all our promotion seasons we only managed to add some depth in January rather then it being in place at the end of the summer window. I have no doubt we tried back then and are trying now but, like the striker position, it's not easy and patience is required. But, personally, I don't think we had a single season under McKenna where I thought central midfield was a strength, particularly defensively.

I thought the catalyst to our success was Morsy and Luongo. I think it was strong enough, given we won promotion in 3 of those 4 years.

Last season only Cov conceded less than us. We had the lowest XG against.

I don't think he is Premiership quality. I agree that our CM recruitment was poor last time. I downvoted you because I thought your delivery was disrespectful. After all, it wasn't him doing the recruitment, and has always given 100% in 2 promotion-winning sides.
