Midfield Recruitment 16:30 - Jul 31 with 7771 viewsLibero

really let us down last time around when we were in the Premier League, and while I'm rather happy with the rest of our business, I am a little concerned we once again appear the be neglecting the middle of the park.

Great to see Luis linked, but we need two, maybe even three robust midfielders in, preferably with Premier League experience-
Azor and Marcelino are options, but we're going to need better than them if we want to stay up and I really do not want to see Jack-bloody-Taylor playing in the Premier League again.

Agreed and leaving it until the Sunderland game would be a huge mistake but on another thread someone has suggested that's what we need to do. As it stands our midfield is not good enough for the Championship, any improvements will take time to gell and will probably end up with us trying to play catch up.

I doubt we’re neglecting it.

We’ve been linked with 2 CM’s this week in Lukic & Luis, & they obviously won’t be the only ones on the list.

Gary O'Neil... 'we're short in midfield aren't we?'

I expect 2 x £20m standard CM's in before Sunderland tbh.

I think we have to go into that Sunderland at full pelt, anything less than 3 points is not enough as that is a game we must win, if the assignment is to stay up.

It's hard not to think that if we get beat we are in big trouble as can't see us getting much in the next two games

We managed to beat Sunderland in our first game in the Championship after promotion from League One.

I don't see why we can't do it again after spending a king's ransom

£20m plus, at least for one of them.

It's a vital position (along with striker). Worth spending big on.

It feels very early for a must win game to be the first game of the season. The optimist sees it the other way around - a win, or even a positive point, would be a great platform to build on over the first few games of the season.

What killed us last time was home form. We realistically need 25+ points from our 19 home games, and if you assume we lose to the big 5 plus Villa, that's basically 2ppg from the rest.

It's really the way the fixture list has fallen. After Sunderland, we have ManU away and Liverpool at home, neither game one which we can realistically expect to get much from. Don't want to be in a situation where Town are playing catch-up on our rivals right from the start of the season.

Tho Cov have Arsenal A for their first match and ManC A their third, Hull have ManU H and Villa H (they play each other in between). Not easy starts either. Does the Prem do this deliberately in order to stunt the morale of newly-promoted teams??

Downied for "Jack-bloody-Taylor" which I think is really unfair.

Agree we need two or even three there though.

We do just have to wait a little bit for the dominoes, cliche though it may be.

Yeah, at least. A third too if Taylor goes. Although there’s an outside chance Humphries could be backup after impressing. He’s still on an upwards trajectory and I bet we’ve yet to find his limit. It’s a gamble though, I’d rather 4 senior players including ideally 2 new starters.

Normally I would very much agree with you but after such a disaster of a season in the Premier last time I really think it's imperative to get points on the board early , if not confidence from the fans and the players will soon slip away . For me anyone being realistic can see we are struggling to get our midfield targets. I am now worried as I still live in hope we can establish ourselves as a Premier league team but out seemingly amateur recruitment seems to be letting us down . Seems a very long time ago Ashton told us we are better equipped this time but as yet we are repeating our midfield mistakes. I desperately hope I'm wrong and will be giving the players my full support however difficult it becomes.

Whilst I make this all correct, I know that Jack Taylor will give 100% on the pitch and has improved season on season. Of course we need better, but the tone of what you say feels a bit disparaging to him.

Part of me hopes he is like Luongo was in the Championship, everyone expected it to be a step up too far but he was actually able to do a very good job.

It has hard enough watching him huff and puff around last season, mate- let alone in the Premier League (again) - we’ve never found a suitable Luongo replacement.

Jack is not yet fit have recently had a cartridge operation! Yes gives tremendous effort but I think we need more in this league .

Early would be nice. I think teams have 3 or 4 games grace period. It doesn’t matter if you lose those as long as there are some signs of improvement. Get a couple of wins shortly after that and everyone calms down. Only get a draw or two in the next 3 and all of a sudden you’re falling behind and moral slips quickly with fans and players alike.

Sunderland seems like a game we could win, momentum is so important in this league as it is so bloody hard to get going.

But maybe the wording was a bit harsh mate.

Don't love your wording on a player who's given us loads. I like Taylor and he's had a lot of game time under McKenna (who seemed to know what he was doing) and been part of two promotions squads. That ain't bad and deserves some respect. Great work-rate, attitude, aggression and the type of person I'd want in a squad at any level.

Yes Keiran obviously knew what he was doing that's why he was desperate to sign Hackney whatever the cost as he feared our midfield was not good enough for the Championship! No improvement since .
