Feels a lot less of a gamble than in 24.
Also feels the club is beginning to be seen as a realistic competitor in the top flight again.
I think there's a sort of ineffable shift that occurs as agents and players begin to see clubs in a different light. Partly a knock on effect of the general aura around McKenna and the club over the last few years plus obviously financial muscle.
It's good to see the ambition.
Recruitment is like the club - ambitious but controlled.
We are finding value too I think in many of these signings.

If not the most attractive appointment, GON has 3+ years experience as a PL manager so has a good antenna for what is needed in a player. Perhaps something we were missing last time where we didn't nail the profile of player necessary.

Completely agree especially re GON. Was never going to be an 'exciting' appointment but I think it was very astute.
I think having someone who had coached successfully in the PL was a must and the fact that he knows how to set up in games where you aren't the favourite. He's flexible and I think that's going to be a big part of our season.
A few more needed but we are going to be a hard working team that explodes in bursts I think. | | | |

I disagree. While we hoped to stay up in 24, we bought players that would give us an excellent chance of coming back up. That would be a better baseline to support another attempt in 2 years time. There are many teams that have gone through the division after being relegated - Luton, Leicester, Sunderland, to name the ones that spring to mind.
This feels more of a gamble. If we go down I expect a higher turnover and a bigger wage bill. We have to take that gamble at some point. Both seem like the right decision to me. This feels higher stakes. |  |

We're going to be counter attacking giants.

We clearly bought in 24 with half a mind on retaining value for the champ and having players for champ.
But in terms of having a go, we had to gamble on players like Phillips, Philogene, even Hutch to an extent.
This time we're steadier. More PL experience and less of a punt.

Think it's hugely to do with the path the club has been on with KM.
Obviously the financial backing, training ground, development etc. But KM was huge for the club in terms of perception. We became the hipsters choice for a period!
I think the recruitment has been excellent from the start to be honest, the difference is that we're now gambling less. We didn't have the infrastructure in place (though we paid top frost dollar for Jamestown soon enough).
The club knew that not all of the 19 signings would work out in 21 but it was spread betting.
The Jan in 2023 was near enough perfect.
Even 24 summer was pretty good in DOS and Delap plus Hutch.
We've had to do the tricky thing of buying for the now and the future and not letting either outweigh the other. | | | |

Last time O’Shea had a full season under his belt, Johnson had a bit, Muric a bit, Ogbene a bit, Phillips plenty.
This time we’ve signed 2 keepers who haven’t played in England, a young Brazilian who hasn’t either, nor has Maeda. IIRC only Fatawu & Diop of the signings have got PL experience.
I think our recruitment has been pretty good so far, but I think we’ve still got a lot to do this month. |  | | |

The players we’ve bought in are of real quality ready made for PL football, for me with the exception of Emersonn who feels and looks a lot more of a long term project.
Diop, Maeda, Scherpen, Fatawu are exactly in the mould I would want us to be looking.
Problem is the numbers, simply put there is so much more work to do in and out in a relatively short period of time. |  | | |

I'm not sure how much that was a deliberate policy and to what extent dictated by circumstances, namely that decent players with relevant experience, of the kind we've been hiring this summer, were not seriously considering Town in 2024. For example, we spent weeks pursuing Ioannidis, before he elected to go elsewhere. We got Broja through the door, briefly, but only because it turned out he was crocked. |  |

Fair point, but in Diop, Fatawu and Luis think you've got solid PL pedigree. Phillips was a gamble because he hasn't shown it for a long time, think it was only really Johnson and DoS last time.

Furlong can do it at this level and Greaves is a much better player than he's given credit for. I'm not too sure we'll be looking to replace Greaves.

I disagree. I think banking on Darnell Furlong against the best attackers in the world on a weekly basis would be a crazy decision. Wrong athletic profile for a premier league full back, not fast enough and can be very rash, picks up an awful lot of yellow cards in the Championship.
I see him as like Conor Townsend was where he comes in if needed here and there and probably does a solid job. But im almost certain the club will bring in a right back.
I like Greaves a bit more but still need to bring in another left footed centre back. | |

It's ok, but honestly watching that Oxford game yesturday really made me realise how short we are on prem standard squad players.
I honestly felt at times in that game that I was watching an u21 game when you walk away thinking there was one or two who could make it..

I think you’re right about this being riskier. 2 years ago we were firmly in the camp of improving the squad but with players who could do a wet Tuesday night in Stoke (perhaps not the best example after last year) if the worst happened. Doesnt feel like this second time around. We’ll probably only know in 12 months time whether it was the right strategy or not | |
