At the moment the lack of goals in our squad is a worry, Jaden likely off, JC doesn't seem to be flavour of the month Emmerson and Maeda both scored single figures in the French and Scottish leagues.
I get the need to be pragmatic but we need to have a bit of a goal threat. |
Although if you look at the PL last season a lot of fans say we need to follow Sunderland and the one thing Sunderland weren't great at was scoring goals. They ended up with a -6 GD and if I remember correctly only 3 teams scored less than them. |  | | |

What's odd about saying our first game is in 2 weeks on Saturday, it's a fact. Currently we don't have many goals in our squad which to me is a touch of a concern, unless GON is planning on duplicating Mick McGiven's masterplan of trying to draw every game 0 0 which didn't work out too well in the 90's. No one was Crystal Palace.
I think the others were possibly relegated. But the point with Sunderland is it was their defence especially in the first half of the season was key to them surviving. You could argue they played a counterattacking model, which I think GON is looking at. | | | |

Lukic is excellent on the ball. He's more mobile than Luongo but like Luongo is ideal for the double pivot in that he is defensively sound but can get up and down, pick a pass and can shoot. | |

Maeda scored 14 in the spl and 17 in total last season so i'm unsure where your getting these figures from | | | |

In terms of the shooting, he's scored 3 goals in 112 appearances for a mid-table PL side.
I am good with the getting him in for sure, proven PL player but I don't think we will really be expecting any goal threat from our two players we signed this week. [Post edited 6 Aug 22:05]

I don’t see a world in which anyone can have a negative opinion on this one. It seems really smart business for probably £8m-£10m.
He’ll be one alongside a Matusiwa or Luis, not instead. He’s much more of an 8 than a 6, can do pieces of everything in a midfielder, both offensively and defensively, certainly at Torino before Fulham he was viewed a the more attack minded midfielders.

Nope, it's just he listed shooting!
It's smart business for us, for the record I didn't say I wasn't sold on the signing, I just wasn't sold on only playing 2 DCMs and I want someone who is able to get up and down the pitch.
However, it does seem like Lukic can do that more than I realized, maybe Fulham didn't always utilize him that way, due to their personnel. [Post edited 6 Aug 22:36]

The sticking point of this conversation is that the transfer window and first game are not on the same day. We are likely to get 2 or 3 players before season starts and another 2 or 3 probably loans by transfer window closes. Imo we have done really well so far. I don't see anything like concerning. It's very unlikely you get players you badly need first, it happens when available, not when you want. Have a little patience, young people seem to expect everything right here, right now. Bloody hell compared to previous windows this on has been excellent. 5 or 6 more to sign and we are giving it a shot. We will sign a few after the first game, but that always happens. | | | |

Horses for courses I think. There will be quite a lot of games next season where we will be quite happy to have a solid base in midfield, soak up pressure and play with the pace of Davis, new RB, Fatawu, Maeda, Enciso (if he joins), Emersonn/new ST on transition/counter attack. I think it's quite clear that is how the squad is shaping up.
We will definitely need a more progressive CM for those home games where we need to push the envelope a bit more though. | | | |

Yes, the central midfield was our big issue last time at PL level. I think this is a very good signing. He comes with a lot of pedigree/experience. You don't play nearly 100 PL games/ 150 Serie A games for middling sides and get 62 caps for Serbia without being good.
Lukic and Diop were the types of signings we didn't make last time out. £15-20m for the pair as well - great value. I think it is clear we are paying the wages required to get these type of players this time. | | | |

It feels like we are going with some really sensible/solid signings, which like you say, we didn't really make last time. I wonder how many more points we would have gained last time if we'd signed Lukic and Florentino rather than Phillips and Cajuste. | | | |
