A massive 3 weeks ahead! New signings at a must 21:48 - Aug 8 with 2721 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Minimum of 6 but 7 or 8 would be ideal.

- RB/RWB Starter

-Striker (likely day 1 starter with Emersonn as an impact sub to see how he gets on as season progresses)

- CM (Creator)

- LCB/LWB (Ideally a player that can start or compete with Greaves and also play LWB if needed or if we have a more defensive game plan over Leif)

- Central 10 (Enciso or other)

- Left 10 (if Philogene and or Clarke go)

Think we still likely have up to 80M available.

I’d like to see another one or two for depth as well in various areas with upgrades over the current bench. Major exits still required.

We are probably only just over half way done in totality even if we have about 8 starters here as it stands.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

There is absolutely no chance GON comes out after today's game and says “The plan is to do quite a bit more” if it is 3/4.

Depending who leaves say Philogene with the money coming in I believe we will spend more than 80 million and we could see our transfer record broken.

I can’t see any world in which we only sign one defender from our championship squad as an example. I’d say two more min there.

So the idea of just 3 in the squad total before September 1st is crazy to me if we were to have any real chance.

I think it’s all about to pick up and get busy again.

In terms gelling pre season etc. Let’s face it, that’s just what football is now, especially in a tournament summer. There is only 5 or so PL games before October 10th anyway I think. Just have to get on with it like most clubs that change divisions.

The people that think we are only get a couple more in are probably those that thought that Walton will start for us and Humphreys could do a job. It’s like they slept through 2024/25

8 signings? So you're expecting us to move 12 current players on in the next 3 weeks?

Let’s say we get another 8 players in, who from the current squad gets cut to get us down to 25, assuming Ogbene, AAH, Hirst and H Clarke all move on below are the list of players signed or who have featured in pre season excluding U21s plus Philogene.

Assume that one of the four keepers leaves, but that still leaves us with 25 first team players, so 8 more would be unregistered or moved on.

Note the list is as I see it and therefore may have gaps.

I have the number in at 5-7. So if we take 6 that requires 10 departures. Which could be Palmer, H Clarke, Furlong/Johnson, Taylor, Humphries, Hirst, AAH, Philogene, Ogbene, Mehmeti.

Kipre/ Nunez/ Akpom could all be on the periphery as well.

There is plenty of flexibility if we think we can get better in certain positions.

I had 26 on my list without Hirst, Button and H Clarke. Still leaves us at 26, plus I can’t see MacAteer going currently based on what GON has said and now that Burns has gone so 27.

The current squad is 30 (plus Walle Egeli). Humphries won’t go imo, as we have to have the 9th bench option available. Button won’t be registered imo. Not sure about Mehmeti.

So, just looking at what room might be available in the squad, that 3 plus 1 if Philogene goes, plus 1 if Mehmeti goes plus some U21s. I’ve assumed for a while that we’ll bolster the squad with a couple of U21s, quite possibly loan signings late in the window. That gets us to 3-5 in the 25, plus 2 x U21s. Maybe we’ll sign more U21s, but I don’t see how we get to as high as 7 (or Joey’s 9) more signings without a few of those being U21.

The real-world mechanics of the trading out of players makes it far harder than the paper exercise people do on the forum

Egeli is under age I think, so doesn't count for a squad place.

Bring in who we can
Send out who we can

Anyone not wanted but cant shift. Dont register them

Happens alot at prem clubs.

Al hamadi for example if no one takes him. No point wasting a squad place.

That’s another example of something that’s easy to do on paper, but not so much in the real-world.

Yes some clubs do that, especially the player hoarders, but it’s those with massive wage bills and revenue. Wages go against SCR at a ratio of 1.175:1, so is expensive for the club in terms of what we can spend on signings.

PS And my calculations assume most of those listed go - notwithstanding my comments on Humphries, Mehmeti and Philogene. The numbers get hard to stack up beyond 3 more in the 25.

I’ll bet we sign more than 4. A lot still to go out don’t forget.
RB LB CM CAM CF still as a minimum. Probably a CB too plus multiple departing . Ali, Clarke, Humphries, Taylor, Hirst, Philogene, palmer, Ogbene all to probably leave.

I think this is more the point. It's not necessarily about cultivating a perfect harmonious group of exactly 25 players. It's about getting the best possible players through the door that we can and sorting whatever we can out with those left not playing. I'm sure we can do quick deals for a few last minute, get them out on loan, but as you say, and as brutal as it is, the reality is deregister a few if need be and sort it out in January.

It's all a drop in the ocean if we are upgrading the likes of kipre, furlong, Johnson, and Taylor, even Nunez, akpom, to top level players. No disrespect to them specifically and they could 'do a job' but swapping for players who would actively improve the squad is a no brainer.

Any improvement is worth it even if it leaves one or two stuck out for a bit.

But remember FIFA changed the rules on bomb squads. The BBC said yesterday Chelsea will have to let players leave as they aren't allowed a bomb squad like last season, and those players can leave for free.
That's going to change the approach of all PL teams this season.

Previously clubs have put players in a bomb squad trying to force them to leave while still looking for sale fees/on-loan payments. Now those players can say f*** you were walking for nothing. Now the value of our players is probably low, but with financial rules, any income from sales is helpful.

I was corrected on this the other day. You don’t need a club grown player for the 9th bench place. That’s only for Europe

FWIW my out list would be as follows:

Van O - loan unless GON considers him the starter
Palmer - sold
H Clarke - sold
Cam H - loan championship
Mehmeti - sold
Ogbene - sold
Jaden - sold
Hirst - sold
AAH - whatever
Taylor - sold if we do sign another CM which is likely

There’s potentially £50m there in transfer fees, which would mean we have a serious amount left to spend

There's also the other angle of would it dissuade players from signing for us in the future.

The likes of Chelsea, ManC, etc get away with it (until now) because players wanted to be at a club like that (and typically huge wages). We don't have that pull, so might a prospective player think 'why join ITFC if I might end up not getting registered in 6 months'. One of our attractions is that we can often promise regular games to players that don't get that elsewhere - now consider flipping that to, 'oh, we deregister you if you're surplus to requirements'.

Didn't quite realise this. Is this literally any player not in the 25? I know players can't be forced to train with the youths for the season like they used to be, but surely an extra player or two who couldn't be registered between September and January is a different kettle of fish?

In any case if we made it AAH and Johnson no one would want to match our wages anyway, probably similar for a few others too.

Not that I'm suggesting this as a long term plan, but as a side effect of quick improvement of the squad for one transfer window. As in if there are a number of available decent players towards the last few days of the window we'd be mad not to improve the squad because of registration of weaker back ups.

Maybe that changed - but I don't recall it changing from last season, when that was as I recall the case.

It's nothing to do with Home Grown players. You MUST have 8 of those in the squad of 25, but Home Grown is a player who played for ANY English or Welsh club.

The rule that came into play here is 'Club Developed' player, and that said you must have one of those in the squad of 25 to be allowed a match day squad of 20, otherwise it's 19. Did that change?

2nd post edit :

EFL Regulation 34.11

Key Requirements of the Rule

Definition: A Club-Developed Player is defined as someone who was registered with the club for at least 12 months (365 days) prior to the end of the season in which they turned 19.

Matchday / Squad Requirement: Under EFL Regulation 34.11, clubs must nominate at least one Club-Developed Player either on their 25-man squad list or on their team sheet (matchday squad) for all league and play-off matches following the summer transfer window closure.

Penalty for Non-Compliance: If a club fails to name a Club-Developed Player on either their squad list or matchday team sheet, their maximum permitted bench size for that match is reduced from 9 substitutes down to 8. 1

Looks like this might be an EFL rule only though, so doesn't apply this season?

Looking at transfer spend alone (yeah, I know…), we’re just under what we spent last time around (I'd forgotten we spent so much) and are currently on around the same level as Leeds and Burnley last season. And yet I’m currently massively more excited about the current crop (and that’s saying something; last time I was pretty impressed too… I’m easy to impress and my hands clap happily). So, on that (fairly pointless) metric alone, we might just stay up. Coventry and Hull are currently well below us in transfer spending (Hull shockingly so). Sunderland spent over 200m on a strategy that seemed to work. So, again on this criterion alone, I can see another three or four coming through the door (though I’ll wonder if my eyes are deceiving me).
