A massive 3 weeks ahead! New signings at a must 21:48 - Aug 8 with 4015 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Minimum of 6 but 7 or 8 would be ideal.

- RB/RWB Starter

-Striker (likely day 1 starter with Emersonn as an impact sub to see how he gets on as season progresses)

- CM (Creator)

- LCB/LWB (Ideally a player that can start or compete with Greaves and also play LWB if needed or if we have a more defensive game plan over Leif)

- Central 10 (Enciso or other)

- Left 10 (if Philogene and or Clarke go)

Think we still likely have up to 80M available.

I’d like to see another one or two for depth as well in various areas with upgrades over the current bench. Major exits still required.

We are probably only just over half way done in totality even if we have about 8 starters here as it stands.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I was corrected on this the other day. You don’t need a club grown player for the 9th bench place. That’s only for Europe

FWIW my out list would be as follows:

Van O - loan unless GON considers him the starter
Palmer - sold
H Clarke - sold
Cam H - loan championship
Mehmeti - sold
Ogbene - sold
Jaden - sold
Hirst - sold
AAH - whatever
Taylor - sold if we do sign another CM which is likely

There’s potentially £50m there in transfer fees, which would mean we have a serious amount left to spend

My list is similar to yours but I suspect one of Furlong or Johnson will leave if we manage to bring in both a LB and RB.

I think KVO is staying because of Walton's injury. Suspect he may go out on loan in Jan if he hasn't broken through as #1.

Didn't quite realise this. Is this literally any player not in the 25? I know players can't be forced to train with the youths for the season like they used to be, but surely an extra player or two who couldn't be registered between September and January is a different kettle of fish?

In any case if we made it AAH and Johnson no one would want to match our wages anyway, probably similar for a few others too.

Not that I'm suggesting this as a long term plan, but as a side effect of quick improvement of the squad for one transfer window. As in if there are a number of available decent players towards the last few days of the window we'd be mad not to improve the squad because of registration of weaker back ups.

So don't quote me as such as I'm only quoting the BBC.

Any player who was previously named in a first team squad (unless under a certain age, 21 I think) and then not named in a first team squad would be covered by this.

Players unions across the world were unhappy with the bomb squad, the UK PFA especially.
They argued in any other job in the UK if you're placed on gardening leave, which basically a bomb squad is, under employment law you would be given an end date, then a next step ie redundancy. While footballers have contracts, its still employment and thus covered under employment law.
Apparently the PFA is quoted if your employer came to you and said we have somebody better at your job, you're on gardening leave, no union would accept that, they would demand you get a redundancy package and allowed to leave. Whereas football clubs are saying the same, except you cannot leave unless someone pays us some money.

Hence now those footballers can say I'm leaving and the club cannot demand any payment. Plus as it would be outside the transfer window (after first squad lists are submitted) and they say I'm leaving, they're classed as out of contract and thus can still move to another club.

As I said thats me trying to quote the BBC from a report on the wireless earlier this week

Reckon we could get more than 50 million for that lot.

Van O - 1 mill loan fee.
Palmer - 3-5 mill permanent
Clarke - 3 mill permanent
Cam H - 1 mill loan fee
Mehmeti- 10 mill permanent
Ogbene - 500,000 loan fee or sell to Saudi club
Jaden - 30- 32 mill permanent
Hirst - 7.5 -10 mill permanent
AAH - 2 mill permanent or 500,000 loan fee
Taylor - 6-8 mill permanent.

That would give us a lot of flexibility.

Thanks. I remember reading possibly the same article. Thought it was a good thing regarding players being frozen out and thinking it was a good idea. Didn't fully think it through to that extent though. Guess that will be how it works. I just thought of the traditional playing with reserves stopping which I've always thought was a bit off.

Will be a trade off for players I suppose as often they're on big wages so can't be easily shifted, but it's also often the fee too. Interesting.

I wonder how it will work in practice, will the club argue they sorted a move to x or y or a late loan move but they player turned it down? Seems to potentially put the power in the players hands, could they force a termination by constantly rejecting moves? Ultimately the clubs chose to sign them and have to honour contracts and play them, but opens up a bit of a minefield in other ways.

Maybe that changed - but I don't recall it changing from last season, when that was as I recall the case.

It's nothing to do with Home Grown players. You MUST have 8 of those in the squad of 25, but Home Grown is a player who played for ANY English or Welsh club.

The rule that came into play here is 'Club Developed' player, and that said you must have one of those in the squad of 25 to be allowed a match day squad of 20, otherwise it's 19. Did that change?

2nd post edit :

EFL Regulation 34.11

Key Requirements of the Rule

Definition: A Club-Developed Player is defined as someone who was registered with the club for at least 12 months (365 days) prior to the end of the season in which they turned 19.

Matchday / Squad Requirement: Under EFL Regulation 34.11, clubs must nominate at least one Club-Developed Player either on their 25-man squad list or on their team sheet (matchday squad) for all league and play-off matches following the summer transfer window closure.

Penalty for Non-Compliance: If a club fails to name a Club-Developed Player on either their squad list or matchday team sheet, their maximum permitted bench size for that match is reduced from 9 substitutes down to 8. 1

Looks like this might be an EFL rule only though, so doesn't apply this season?

That’s right. It’s an EFL rule only so doesn’t apply to us this year.
We must abide by home grown - we have loads of those
No need to abide by club developed

Walton looks like he’s going to Germany for the Berlin friendly. So we could look to do something before Jan

Agreed on the total we could get. Thought best to be conservative

I'm sure some agents will use it to their advantage, but I guess conversely the clubs were using it to their advantage, the old saying, what goes around, comes around.

Plus as you say all the players will be on PL wages and probably happier to stay on those.

Although I thought it was also interesting that Alonso also made the comment that based on what he has been told from last season having players in that situation created a negative feeling amongst the entire squad. Ie players seeing other players (friends) forced to train away from them, created unhappiness amongst the entire squad, and another reason he didn't want the same happening at Chelsea this season.

"We must abide by home grown - we have loads of those"

You say that, but it could be a lot closer than people think by the time we get to Sept 1st. When this was discussed a couple of weeks ago, the following list was who we had that qualified:

Likely to stay
Walton
Davis
Greaves
O'Shea
McAteer
Akpom

May Stay, may go

Johnson
Furlong
Humphries
Mehmeti
J Clarke

Likely to go / already gone
Palmer
Button
H Clarke
Taylor
Szmodics
Burns
Hirst
Philogene
Al Hamadi

There may need to be some decisions on who stays based on the Home Grown rule. If all I listed as likely to stay do, then 2 from the may stay/go list need to stay UNLESS we sign anyone who qualifies.

People need to calm down. It's not like the club are not trying. We will make the signings needed. I think it will be 5 rather than 7-8. I think 5 signings in key positions RB, LB, CM, Enciso or similar & ST would nicely complete our squad.

There is absolutely no chance GON comes out after today's game and says “The plan is to do quite a bit more” if it is 3/4.

Could easily mean 4. It's not easy to sign players now we are not under Evans and signing anyone who turned up with a pair of boots.

4 is a good chunk of a 25 man squad. I think people expecting 7-8 are in for disappointment.

I don't see us getting a LF. We have Maeda + Philogene or Clarke. Think we need a LB and a LCB. Not one person for both roles

I sit in the middle at 5 maybe six. That’s just common sense as well looking at the holes in the squad.

Palmer / Scherpen / Button
Furlong / Johnson / +1
Davis / +1
Diop, Greaves, Kipre, O'Shea
Luis, Lukic, Matusiwa, Nunez, +1
Fatawu / +1
Maeda / Philogene / +1
Egeli / +1
Emersonn / +2

That means van Oevelen (loan), Walton, H Clarke, Humphreys, Taylor, McAteer, Ogbene, J Clarke, Mehmeti, Hirst and Al Hamidi would all be shipped out, one way or another.

Personally I'd be happy to let go of Nunez and Philogene as well, and bring in new players in their stead, but we can only do so much.

I think you’re underestimating our approach this year. There’s a bunch of players that really aren’t much use to us at this level that we would be able to move to the EFL with ease if we wanted to, this is the time of years dominos will really start falling as well.

I think it will be 5 minimum but we need 6 min and I’d prefer a few more for depth. Those few more might be optimistic but who knows. I would also be surprised if Philogene plays for us again but I might be wrong.

Think we could easily see sales of 40M - 50M if Jaden goes.

I agree broadly with these numbers - I think 5, 6 if Jaden goes.

We don't need to sell Jaden to be able to spend another £40-50M to be fair. I still expect to see us break the club record with one signing well north of £30M alone, and a total of another maybe £75-100M

I said sales not incomings. I think we can spend 70 easily, another 100 if Jaden goes.

Even if he doesn’t we should raise 15M minimum from further sales as well.

Contract length is important when you look at fees and wages.
