Way back in 1976 I was living at Billericay when Billericay Town made the final of the final of the FA Vase and won in extra time against Stanford Rovers. Great day at Wembley and then a great night back in the Billericay Town Clubhouse including a drink out of the cup when the players arrived there with the trophy. They went on to win the Vase twice more in 77 and 79 which I think is still a record. Great memories of Billericay with plenty of heart shown on the pitch but not a lot of darkness that night although there was hell in my head the next morning!

I’d suggest you travel more if you think Billericay is the heart of darkness.

You’ve never been to Fakenham then? Set aside a few hours of your life and step into that hinterland.

Basildon is far worse.

Definitely has one of the ugliest town centres in the region, next to Harlow (or pretty much any of the 60s new towns).

But it does make me thing how diverse of a county Essex is. On one hand you have Saffron Walden being considered one of the most affluent towns in the region, but on the other hand you have Clacton and Jaywick being some of the most deprived areas in the country. You have historic towns (and cities) like Thaxted, Maldon, Halstead, and Colchester along side much newer places like Harlow, Basildon, Chelmsford, and South Woodham Ferrers.

I know every county is almost like this but it's very noticeable in Essex.

Howevery you feel town centre these days you can't deny that it has loads of beautiful buildings like Sparrowes House, the Town Hall, The Lloyds Bank building, and pretty much any building down The Walks or Dial Lane
