You can pick them apart and rationalise them but this is not filling me with a lot of confidence on the player. Basically he’s not great but we didn’t want to risk leaving it too late and getting no-one so we’ll do our best.
O'Neil continued: "He's a young striker with a lot of work that we need to do. We need to get into him to help him with some of the deficiencies that he has in his game.
"But his attributes will cause teams problems. Especially if they leave big spaces like there was today.
"I think number nines are always difficult to get. We knew we were going quite early on it. We made a call on it to get it done early rather than wait and see what else was around.
"It was a case of 'let's get that done and get him in', then spend as much time as possible trying to get him up to speed on what we do and what it needs to look like for him. That will help him, definitely."

Seemed to me like a manager trying to dampen expectations on a young player after a good performance, while indicating we're still in the market for a starting number 9.

It is an unusual set of quotes to give about a new signing in my opinion.
He did start with "A good performance" which perhaps gives greater context.
O'Neil: A Big Day For Emersonn8th Aug 2026 19:13 Town boss Gary O’Neil says new signing Emersonn is continuing to make progress after he struck his first goal in pre-season against Rayo Vallecano at Portman Road.12

I think if people are expecting him to be our starting 9 then I'd be slightly concerned by the quotes but if we look at him as 2nd/3rd choice vying for a spot on the bench then it's much less of a worry.
In that context the quotes for me are more a case of get it done early so we can get a full preseason with him to help him integrate and develop. He's young but he's got lots of potential. He was involved in all three goals on Saturday which showed progress.
I just really hope that we get at least one starting 9 in so that there's not too much pressure on him early.

He needs an experienced player ahead of him. But he'll be the 2nd option, definitely not the 3rd.

He did, that's true. I don't think it massively changes the tone of the other quotes which seemed very hedging to me. But yes he did compliment him.

I don't understand this type of reaction from a fan. We're all built differently and everyone is obviously entitled to support and react as they wish. But why the need to see the worst and worry before a ball has been kicked? We've bought a young exciting Brazilian ffs. He's clearly got something, it might work, it might not, but isn't that the point, especially pre season, to be excited, to be optimistic, to see the positives, it's not your money they're spending. There clearly are positives, many of them, and he's clearly worth a chunk, even if we've paid a premium.
As I say, react as you want, but I prefer to pick up the positives, now of all times, it's going to be a long difficult season and we are inevitably going to struggle at times, probably lots, so why try and dampen those low expectations before the league season has even begun? Dream that this Brazilian powerhouse could shoot us to safety and be sold for £60 million next season. Uppa towen.

Young footballer needs to improve on things shocker!!!
[Post edited 11 Aug 17:14]
come on, there's a way of saying that - "He's got a lot of potential, he'll cause teams problems. Obviously he's a young striker and there's areas of his game we need to improve but that's true for all of the players. We can all improve".
To say the other stuff seemed odd, to me. if it doesn't to anyone else, then no worries.

I think GON has been very honest in all his interviews so far.
Also, worth noting Hull bid 22M for him (I'd suggest that is like us bidding 30M with revenue differences), so scouts outside of ITFC obviously seeing a lot of data that show he has big potential.

I'd imagine this isn't "news" to the player, so who cares if he's giving us a bit more information that normal. Isn't that a good thing?
If the player thinks he's number 1 and has no faults, then yeah it could be damaging. I doubt that is the case.

yes I'm not disagreeing,. if anything what I'm saying is GON seemed to be overly negative about the player.

What are you talking about? Are you suggesting that he knows Emersonn is rubbish but bought him anyway? Or that he didn't perhaps phrase things perfectly. If it's the latter then it's got nothing to do with the players perceived abilities, if it's the former then it's mental on a few levels.
Either way you've chosen to evaluate these words very specifically and doubt the player. So the point stands, there is enough said, written and seen of the player to be positive, but you've drawn attention to the negative. Seems a bit unnecessary as a fan to me. I'd rather see the obvious positives.

He's just turned 22 and had 30 senior appearances, are you expecting him to say he's about to tear up the Premier League?
No, I don't. The comments seemed unusually blunt to me. That's all.
This is a weird quote to me, sorry -"I think number nines are always difficult to get. We knew we were going quite early on it. We made a call on it to get it done early rather than wait and see what else was around."

But to what end? On its own it means nothing. On its own it's looking for something. Yes he could have, and was maybe even attempting, a vaguely similar phraseology to yours, but he didn't. Do you think this means Emersonn is a bad player because of this interview and GON was trying to convey this?

It is an unusual set of quotes to give about a new signing in my opinion.
Only if you are completely incapable of reading them in the wider context of this being a young lad coming to a new country for a record fee. Fans will expect and somewhat unfairly him to be scoring and performing from day 1. He is a high ceiling, high potential player that we have signed now when we are capable of signing him. There is risk attached to this one.
GON is making it clear he's not the finished article. He is being honest. He also knows the importance of NOT bigging him up and keeping him grounded and focussed on the work he needs to do. Playing it down with fans.
Look at some of our fans with Walle Egeli. Most have patience but some don't and spout off about him being a waste of money etc. he's got tons of potential as well
