There's a wodge of English exceptionallism going on. The Premier League has many of the best players, but the very best tend to go to Real Madrid, Barcelona & Bayern Munich. We used to be able to claim that the Premier League was the most competitive, but that really isn't the case any more, with the top few and bottom few very predictable.
English dominance of Europa League and Europa Conf League shows some depth compared with other leagues, but we're not winning the Champions League regularly.
La Liga is arguably as good. The Bundesliga (excl Bayern) is more competitive and with huge crowds. The Premier League is in the conversation. |
As you say, it depends how you measure it. Certainly in terms of global viewership, which = financial success, the Premier League dwarfs the others. And this creates self-reinforcement as it allows the PL clubs to recruit the best players.
Possible having so competitive a league (& more fixtures) hampers English clubs at the very top level. |  |

Comparatively the PL is arguably more open than other leagues, with 3 different winners in the past 3 years.
Barca / Real win La Liga every year (last 5 and 11 of the last 12) PSG win Ligue 1 every year (last 5 and 13 of the past 15) and Bayern the Bundesliga (13 of the last 14).
I think the PL has better depth of quality, hence successes in UEFA cup and Conference league level sides, but there's not a lot to choose between the top 1 or 2 in each of Europe's top divisions and the Champions League tends to be more competitive in that respect, although with 3 winners in the past 7 seasons the PL has done well. I think it's the best league in the world, but so it should be with the money involved throughout it. Even the newly promoted PL sides spend far more than their respective clubs in other leagues. |  | | |

I think he does mean 30 million euros for both, but whether that turns out to be the case is another matter. |

Don't think the pure profit would make a difference if its coming off the Enciso deal as that's left pocket, right pocket. Sell on fee would though.

Yes, €30m as per French reports last week, which is just under £27m. Seems a lot for him to me, but if he does well this season, no doubt he will be worth more next summer and beyond. |

They all seem a lot to me, but I'm becoming a fossil.
A bit tough to stomach paying 3x what the selling club did not long ago, or in Emersonn's case much more than that. We are where we are though, lets hope they give us a good shot at staying up. |
I think we pay so much for the players we bring in, that the mark up for us later on as the selling club is so little, that we dont make anywhere near what we perhaps should. |  |

I thought he was far more impactful than Hutchinson in 24/25 - who we sold for £37.5m. Numbers back that up as well. There was a touch of individualism about him but feels like he could really go up another level with us again season if his decision making has improved a bit.
He's sort of a proven quantity at PL level as well. We know he can cause problems in this league but we need to see it more consistently. [Post edited 17 Aug 13:58]
