Actually I disagree. We are talking about this all those years later. Stories like this make football. I’ve been at many a dull game that has been livened up enormously by a referring howler. In 30 years time we might find ourselves talking instead about those 10 seconds in the upcoming match at Old Trafford where we thought we had taken the lead, until “VAR review” appeared on the scoreboard and everyone checked twitter to see what was going to happen for two minutes, until the goal was disallowed for a handball nobody appealed for.

The atmosphere was loud and angry that night, think everyone else in the ground knew that decision was wrong. Probably helped get us the equaliser so some small recompense. Robbie Savage coming to PR the season he got Sereni sent off and absolutely bottling it in the face of a genuinely hostile crowd stands out as well.

He dived more often than Tom Daley. He was a cheating scroat throughout his career.

I don't think Saunders dived. It was just a superb challenge from Whelan. 10 year old me was furious.

This I never got. Saunders clearly didn’t dive. Whelan got the ball first, pretty cleanly, then Saunders fell over him. And Saunders was a figure of hate as a result of this at PR ever since. There may be plenty of reasons to dislike Saunders, but his reaction to this challenge isn’t one.

Even the old girl near me who used to knit during matches was calling the ref names I didn't think she'd know! I think the only thing to rival the limbs/noise I saw from Sarmiento was when Kiwomya equalised.

But my point was more about VAR in the context it *should* be used, to correct a clear and obvious error, your second point is the actual implementation which none of us want . . . until it goes in our favour of course.

Saunders saw and felt the tackle. He knew where Whelan was and threw himself over his leg. And conned the ref in the process. Only Saunders truly knows but I wouldn’t trust his word as far as I can volley him. I still think he cheated.

"Even the old girl near me who used to knit during matches was calling the ref names I didn't think she'd know!" This is such a great descriptive line for the mood that night.

I dunno. To me it looks like a great tackle and a truly baffling decision. I understand the desire to want to blame Saunders, the bloke's a knob. But that's all on the ref.

Yes, that is how it was originally marketed. Clearly we are never going back, and arguing about this isn’t hugely productive, but I’d happily lose the whole thing and live with these kind of decisions.
| Unhappy Bob Hamer Day to all who celebrate on 14:15 - Aug 25 with 684 views | SomethingBlue | Remember it vividly, one of the first games sitting up in Block M with my dad. Place was seething that night and utterly captivating at that age. Equaliser was an amazing moment but that decision will never be topped for awfulness. | |

| Unhappy Bob Hamer Day to all who celebrate on 14:35 - Aug 25 with 591 views | patrickswell | The only reason I can think of that Hamer gave that decision is that, in the replay that’s shot looking towards the North Stand, it looks as though David Linighan runs across Hamer’s line of sight at the very moment Whelan makes the challenge. | | | |
| Unhappy Bob Hamer Day to all who celebrate on 15:17 - Aug 25 with 493 views | burnbudgiesburn | I'm also seriously weirded out that this is now 34 years ago and yet at the time was only 11 years after we lifted the UEFA cup. It doesn't feel that long ago, yet at the time the UEFA cup win DID feel longer ago in my head than that does. I guess that's an age thing, but timespans do my head in when I think of them too much! | | | |

30 years down the road maybe ok but VAR would have helped that day and we would have been talking about great win.

Most pros are the same. Do whatever might win you a game. Eric Gates used to win a few penalties, but not many call him out on here as a cheat.
