But imo its really stupid to be going into deadline day needing a striker

The windows been fab. But whats that now. 4 years of scraping around on deadline day for another striker.

You’re wrong Frimmers. ~130 strikers were signed in the summer window during those 10 years. Do you want the full list? Ok, maybe just the summary for now. Show me otherwise …

” What that tells us
Across the ten summers:
37 individual striker signings
35 occasions on which a Premier League club signed a striker
So the average was 3.7 strikers per final week

On average, 3.5 Premier League clubs signed a striker during the final week.
2018 was the busiest, with 7 strikers going to 6 clubs.
2023 was the quietest, with just Divock Origi joining Nottingham Forest.

There are some particularly interesting examples.
2016: six different clubs brought in centre-forwards during the final week, including West Ham's Simone Zaza, Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Leicester's Islam Slimani. Zaza's move was on 28 August and Calvert-Lewin's on 31 August.
2017: Tottenham's Fernando Llorente, Swansea's Wilfried Bony and Burnley's Nahki Wells all arrived on deadline day, while Hull brought in Nouha Dicko two days earlier.
2018: this was exceptionally busy. Ings and Vietto went to Southampton and Fulham respectively on deadline day, while Mitrović, Andone, Vydra, Muto and Lucas Pérez also arrived during the final week. The contemporary transfer list confirms the 9 August cluster, including Andone, Vydra, Mitrović, Muto and Pérez.
2021: Hwang Hee-chan is an important addition that I missed in the earlier deadline-day calculation. He joined Wolves on 29 August, before Ronaldo, Édouard and Rondón all arrived on deadline day.
2023: Origi's move to Forest was actually announced at 00:40 on 2 September, but the deal was for the 1 September deadline and therefore belongs in the final-week calculation.
2024: Palace signed Nketiah, Leicester signed Édouard and Everton completed the late Broja loan.
2025: Newcastle are the standout example. They signed Nick Woltemade during the final week and then Yoane Wissa on deadline day, while Liverpool signed Alexander Isak on deadline day.

One important correction to my earlier figures
Having now gone through the dates properly, my earlier answer understated the deadline-day totals. I had inadvertently omitted several strikers, most notably Zaza, Calvert-Lewin, Llorente and Hwang Hee-chan.

Using the same methodology, I now get 26 striker signings on deadline day across 2016–2025, rather than the 24 I originally gave you.

That makes the broader statistic particularly interesting:
37 strikers signed in the final seven days, of which 26 were signed on deadline day.
So approximately 70% of the striker recruitment that occurs in the final week happens on the actual deadline day.

That is probably the most relevant statistic if you're trying to assess how realistic it is for a Premier League club to still be looking for a striker in the final week.”

Im no more wrong than youre wrong depending on where we are getting the information.

The data provided is highly inaccurate, factually broken, and fundamentally miscalculates the timing of striker transfers. While the general assumption that a large chunk of business happens late is a common football trope, the specific year-by-year examples, player timelines, and overall percentages cited are riddled with clear errors and hallucinated historical details

The conclusion that "70% of striker recruitment happens in the final week" is completely wrong.During any standard Premier League summer transfer window, clubs complete between 120 to 150 permanent or major incoming loan signings. Roughly 25 to 35 of these are recognized central strikers or primary forwards (e.g., Erling Haaland, Darwin Núñez, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Dominic Solanke, Alexander Isak). The vast majority of these marquee number nines are finalized in June and July so they can join pre-season tours.Even if we accept the prompt's figure of 37 final-week strikers over 10 years (which averages 3.7 per year), that means only about 3 or 4 strikers are signed late per summer.Because 25–35 total strikers are signed across an entire summer, final-week signings actually account for only 10% to 15% of overall striker recruitment, not 70%.

So i maybe wrong
You maybe wrong
Someome else maybe wrong

Lets simplify it

We sign flemming everything is rosey

You misread that completely Frimmers.

The 70% quoted is “as it clearly states” the percentage of strikers signed in the final week that were signed on the final day. Not for the entire window.

To make it simple, of ~135 strikers signed during the summer windows, ~37 were in the final week and of those 26 on the final day (that is the ~70%)..

So 73% of striker signings are made prior to the final week and 80% before the final day then. Meaning most clubs sign their strikers well before deadline day

After a lot of thought, I am happier with Flemming than Ueda or Tammy.
There was a reason Villa wanted to let go of Tammy, That screams Kelvin to me,
Ueda could be amazing, but we have also seen a bunch of strikers from the Dutch league who haven’t cut it. HOw does that corner flag look, Ricky? ITs a risk we can’t afford now,
Flemming has done it in the PL, and will share with our Brazilian

Can't say I watched a lot of Burnley in the PL but I watched the full 90 mins against West Ham a few weeks ago and I am happy with that deal when you combine that with last years stats.

Really puts himself about as well.

LOL Fimmers - you got there finally.

You've basically just said exactly what I originally said, but just the opposite way around. Yes, 20% on the final day means that 80% were transfers in the preceding ~80days. So :

~20% in 1 day on deadline day
~30% in 7 days in the final week of the window
~80% in ~70 days from the window opening to the final week

That's a significant weighting towards the end of the window, which was the original point. There is a major uptick in the final week, from ~1.4/day to 5.6/day in the final week. And 26 on the final day. That's an exponential growth as you approach deadline day. Quid est demonstratum

But you and others have tried to make it out that MOST striker signings happen at the end of the summer window, when no MOST don't

Is there a rush at the end, of course there is, as no transfers can be done tomorrow onwards. So as described MOST clubs go into panic mode signing there lower targets or clubs finally cave in isak for example, rather than having a nightmare player on their hands.

Hopefully we've got Flemming all sorted

Where did I say MOST were done at the end of the window. You're conflating other responses. I merely pointed out the context disputing that 'only a few striker deals' were done in the final couple of days and 'the majority' are done in the early days of the window. The stats do not reconcile with those claims.

I like Flemming by SuffolkPunchFC 31 Aug 22:03
That number lacks context. It is approximately 20% of all strikers that were signed at the end of the window, and to extend it a little more, one third were signed with less than a week to go.

Strikers deals are notoriously done towards the end of the window.

Nope. Majority of prem stiker signings are done early in the window. Next is early august mid august. Remaining Scrambles made towards the end.

We got the early one. We are in the scramble pack now.

You make an interesting point, as any analysis depends on the data available. Transfermkt is the best source of transfers, and one of the caveats is that players main position can change over time, and players will often be listed as playing in more than one position.

Transfermkt currently has Flemming with the main role of CF/no.9, which is probably an accurate reflection of where he's played most recently (and the role we want him for)

Irrespective of all the backwards and forwards on here, we got our number one target early.

Our next target we don't know, was it Flemming? I doubt it. I suspect Delap was considered, we had a sell on, so made it worth considering, but alas, the figure he went for was higher than I would have anticipated.

Abraham would have been some real coup, but we've worked really hard to keep all options alive and a deal for Flemming is pretty decent.

Who knows who else was considered, perhaps once they'd seen Emersonn, they adjusted their aims lower or higher based on what they'd seen?

Ultimately, if Flemming is here by close of the window, we've done spectacularly well.

It isn't unreasonable to point out we have struggled to bring in an adequate number of strikers in previous summer transfer windows under Gamechanger, leaving us short for the first part of the season and then having to make amends in January. That leads to nervousness now.

Thankfully it sounds like the Flemming deal is progressing well and should be over the line by 11pm.

Looking at Abrahams last few seasons he has hardly been prolific, in fact i think Flemming has scored double. Ok different circumstances but personally i think we have got a player currently at the top of his game compared to one who has clearly struggled to reach his previous heights, i actually think we may have dodged a bullet

I do understand what you are saying, does feel like we do cut things fine with centre forwards in the window.

Having said that, I don't think it's easy there aren't too many that jump out at you, and as we have seen in the last couple of days with Tammy Abraham - a move that really would suit both parties perfectly well, and ultimately the player has decided he doesn't want to come here.

I really like Zian Flemming, I think he's a real throwback centre forward with a good goal scoring prowess - I think it very difficult to find too many complaints in the move, maybe just being left a little late, but better late than never!

I’d say it’s risky to leave it this late rather than foolish as suggested by the OP. Bottom line is that the club doesnt leave it late on purpose but quite often other deals have to fall into place first.

This is what my friend Claude thought last week when I asked about the three linked
Which is probably what had also landed on. Fleming maybe not such an exciting signing on paper but the signing that would make most sense (a bit like choosing GON to replace McKenna)

Why Flemming

He’s the only one of the three who’s already proved he can score in the Premier League for a bad team. He scored a team-high 11 Premier League goals last season for a Burnley side that went down, and outperformed his xG by 2.25 doing it. That’s the exact profile a promoted club needs — someone who converts scraps rather than someone who needs a good team around him. Sky Sports report Ipswich are among the clubs keen, and Burnley’s manager has admitted he may go before deadline day, at around £17m. He’s 28, so no resale upside, and Lille, Brentford and Everton have all sniffed around — you’d need to move fast.

Why Ueda is arguable

He finished 2025/26 as Eredivisie top scorer with 25 league goals and is valued around €20m with Feyenoord willing to let him leave. He’s a genuine No.9, which Flemming isn’t quite, and he’s said to prefer England over Fenerbahçe. The risk is obvious: 25 Eredivisie goals rarely translate one-for-one to the Premier League, and he’s 27 with no top-five-league experience. Also worth noting he’d link up with Daizen Maeda.

Why not Abraham

He joined Aston Villa in January 2026 on a deal to 2030 and managed three goals in 16 appearances before a shoulder problem ended his season. Villa aren’t selling a £21m January signing seven months later, so it’s a loan at best, and he’s behind Watkins for a reason. Lowest cost, lowest ceiling.

The bigger point: Ipswich already have the unproven-young-striker bet covered — £24m on Emersonn, who scored six for Toulouse last season — plus Akpom, Hirst and Al-Hamadi as squad filler. What’s missing is a floor, not another gamble. That’s Flemming.

Not sure of the implied view of Claude that we are a bad team!! 😂

Well based on reports and Phil and Stus own words, we're waiting to find out if Burnley will accept the bid based on whether they sign someone

so do you think we're just chilling with a pint relaxed and just waiting

or maybe making calls, trying to give ourselves another last minute option should it not happen.
