| Something is going down in Portsmouth… on 10:35 - Sep 7 by OldFart71 | people come up with this masked vigilantes thing and I have no doubt that just as the large scale protests last year had a certain amount of very right wing people who do stir up trouble a huge majority were law abiding people. but whatever the grievance or cause people protest about you will always have a faction that takes advantage and will cause damage and loot and that's a fact. In my opinion the Tommy Robinson's of this world should keep out of these protests and it is right that people of any colour, nationality or religion should be expected to be lawful. But if you get a government that completely ignores the will of the people you will end up, sadly, with vigilantes as it becomes the only way to make a protest be heard. |
Yeah I agree, there is no doubt that some of those will have extreme views and that's not welcomed in society. But, as you say, there will be many that generally have had enough. I have. I'm sick to death with seeing thousands of men arrive here illegally year on year, highly suspect that a small number will go on to be incredibly valuable UK citizens in the future, but at the same time I highly suspect that % that don't contribute anything will massively outweigh that. an extra 45 french police was talked about as a way to stop this at source last week, they simply moved up/down the french coast, and found a new route. 70mile journey i think i read. they only take that risk as they know how fruitful it is for them to arrive in this country. both the conseravtives and labour have failed us on this subject.

| Something is going down in Portsmouth… on 09:10 - Sep 7 by OldFart71 | I am concerned at a certain amount of flippancy regarding these boats coming in. You may agree with mass immigration or you may not. The fact is this country cannot afford all of them. Whether you believe certain channels or not the main channels for reasons only know to themselves refuse to cover these stories. Sensible immigration is fine and the reasons these people come here when in safe havens in other countries on the face of it appears due to our tendency to take rules and regulations by the ECHR and laws introduced by the Blair government to the max whereas other countries seem to abide by what they decide. There is no doubt that immigration in particular is ripping this country apart, along with many of the policies that Labour seems to think whereby they are in a hole but just keep digging. |
Why are you ignoring facts? 1. The ECHR in Strasbourg has prevented the removal of immigrants from the UK 13 times since 1980. 2. In 2019 there were 299 boats and 13,000 to 14,000 unauthorised arrivals, In 2021 there were 28,526 boats and around 37,000 unauthorised arrivals, What happened to allow this sharp rise? Could it have something to do with withdrawing from the Dublin agreement and access to Eurodac security database, and not having a return agreement with Europe? Have a think, if the ECHR helps so few remain in the UK, what is the real reason for Reform and Conservatives wanting the UK to withdraw from it?

Would that be the Norway that had a very similar number of asylum claims to july26 in proportion with their population? About 12 per 10000 in the uk. And about 10 per 10000 in Norway...

I think your first factoid is a little disingenuous. The ECHR may have only intervened in those few examples, but we may be allowing so many to remain because government knows the convention makes it so difficult to remove them. It's the existence of the rules and our strict following of them that is the problem, not the enforcement from above. If we try removing 99% of those 37,000 that arrived, we end up with a backlog of 36,600 expensive legal cases to fight. Not a realistic or sustainable system, is it? Not fit for purpose.

| Something is going down in Portsmouth… on 10:37 - Sep 7 by LeoMuff | Is it not enough the government has lowered immigration from 900000 to 100000 odd ? It’s a huge drop, and will continue to do so. In regard to immigration in general I go into care homes, hospitals and people home and a huge majority of care staff and nurse are immigrants, we are screwed without them and the local population aren’t likely to step up it seems |
If you can bring value to the UK by working in care homes, hospitals and going into people's homes to provide care, and arrive in the country by following the legitmate process then you should be welcomed. If you arrive on a boat via a beach in France then you dont fall into the above group of immigrants as these people can arrive via airports or ports and show the correct paperwork.

Over the last few years government has been making it increasingly difficult for legitimate key workers to come and settle, whilst completely failing to get a grip on the 'irregular immigration' side of things. It's a mess at both ends.

Norway has passport free movement for EU citizens, it has access to Eurodac and a returns agreement, as I posted above things the UK gave up. In fact Reform and the current Conservative parties both pushed hard for the removal of all protection from illegal immigration following brexit, it looks to me that they allowed and encouraged high illegal immigration because they needed it to secure particular votes.

The will of the people was to vote in an administration in a democratic election. They committed to reducing immigration. They have.

No. They can't. There are no paths for asylum claims from overseas for most of them and many will not have passports or plane fares.

So if they cant afford a plane fare, how can they afford to pay the people smugglers with the boats? (we know from the many investigations that these people pay thousands for the boats)

Just stop and think about what you are saying for a moment.... "these people can arrive via airports or ports and show the correct paperwork" If this were true, why would you risk your life getting into an overcrowded and unsuitable dinghy to cross the busiest shipping lane in the world? Rightly or wrongly, it is very hard to claim asylum through legitimate routes as you need to be in the country to apply* *citation needed

If they don't have passports or enough money to pay for plane fares then I would argue they perhaps aren't going to be bringing much to the table in terms of providing skills in which we don't have or lacking number within. We need the best talent and skills in this country. We should not have to take people into the UK who cannot even support themselves in their own country. That is not racist either, we have enough lazy and financial liabilities in this country already.

How many times does it need to be said? There aren’t any functioning legal routes, and that’s been the case for years. And that’s the problem.

Think about what you are saying for a moment... You are supporting my point. If these people had the correct paperwork, with visas supported by education/ qualification or sponsors. Then they wouldnt beed to arrive on a dinghy. This is exacly the point, they dont have these things. So why should we take these people and financially support them? The welfare system is bursting at the seams already.

Then we should all be protesting for the boats to stop until functioning legal routes are developed. That makes more sense doesnt it? - If we let anyone through that is unvetted then surely that is a risk we should not be taking? Or do we continue to let people in blindly, carry on footing the bill for it and taking with risk with regards to the behaviour of some of those coming in?

Do you actually understand what an asylum seeker is? If you are genuinely seeking asylum, what you are actively trying to escape is very unlikely to give you the time and space to get your paperwork in order.

Illegal migrants are not a burden upon the welfare system. They have no NI number or paperwork to claim benefits.

I work with a huge number of foreign nationals who have come to the UK legally, as skilled workers. And are fantastic people to have here contributing to the country and daily life. So if there isn't a legal route, how/why are they here?
