| Ed Sheeran on 08:47 - Sep 15 by SuperKieranMcKenna | His chosen profession? He’s a singer, not a politician. Poor taste to call him pro-genocide, Kneecap actively waved a Hezbollah flag on stage (who committed various massacres against Syrian Civilians) and were praised by many on here. Mad world. Pretty sure like Ashton-gate, this will all blow over fairly quickly, Sheeran has done nothing wrong, and unlike the noise of SM most people are actually not that politically engaged. Those in the wrong are the ones trying to shut down any support of Palestine, not people just looking to sing a few songs. I’ve not seen Ham use his platform for adding a pro-Palestine voice, maybe we should shut down TWTD. Or maybe like most people he’s just doing his job… [Post edited 15 Sep 8:49]

Ed has *always* been hyper focused on himself and his bank balance, diluting and regurgitating other people’s culture and work, and carefully crafting a PR image that presents him as an ‘every man’ or ‘just an ordinary bloke’ that is essentially built off the back of him not being conventionally attractive or how people think a pop star would/should look. Over the last two decades he’s entered various communities/cultures/social groups- stripping out what he thinks is monetisable, diluting it, reappropriating and repackaging it alongside a carefully constructed narrative, all designed to help him be as broad as possible and sell as much turgid bland flavourless guff as possible to as many people as possible. He has repeatedly strong armed himself into various media giants/franchises, under the guise of the “I’m just a massive fan” every guy persona, to get his name and face and music to an almost ubiquitous presence. Lego, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The Hobbit, Pokémon, all kinds of franchises, events, areas he has no right in being such a presence in, but that are/were some of the biggest properties in the world. No one ever asks why it’s just Sheeran who cynically systemically and repeatedly self inserts himself into pop culture on repeat, or the value it brings him to align with these Goliaths and/or include it in his carefully constructed public narrative, etc. He’s a very conceited man and always has been. Personally, I can’t stand the way he uses our club as an extension of his PR machine- and while I do appreciate that him using us in this way brings in millions upon millions for the club, some things are more important than money. He isn’t ‘apolitical’ he just thought people were stupid enough to accept that as a reasoning for passively siding with genocide. Ed has enough money and power to strong arm the venues and those around him to keep Macklemore on the tour, he’s just more concerned with his bank balance and the ‘hurt’ he mentions, than 3 years of countless slaughtered innocent children. What a cowardly little gimp Sheeran is. Hiding behind excuses - I always knew he was extraordinarily conceited and self interested, but this is a new low. I guess the only positive in all of this is that it absolutely dismantles him cosplaying as an Irishman anymore- one of his many PR constructs. [Post edited 15 Sep 8:27]

Aye, that’s a solid dilution - but he does it on a scale like no other and has always had this MO. That and the sheer scale of the “success” and length of time he’s been culture vulture’ing/had people duped is what’s notable. This situation just punctuates what cynical, conceited, disingenuous little gimp he is and exposes the depths he’s willing to drop to in order to maintain that, despite already being disgustingly wealthy. There’s comments/up-votes in this thread delivered by people who around two decades ago were in amongst it in the local music scene when Sheeran was. They’ll know the genius of what he has created is that his narrative fabrication has just about enough truth to it, that those looking at a distance wouldn’t question it, most would celebrate it- again, just an MO he has taken and repeated year-on-year-on-year. I imagine there’s a few who used to know him who are finding this quite cathartic. [Post edited 15 Sep 9:24]

just an MO he has taken and repeated year-on-year-on-year. Sound like me in my job, so I can't criticise him for that. Does this issue regarding Gaza just give you the opportunity to criticise someone you don't really like? Despite the fact he hasn't really done anything offensive except to be commercially successful?

It’s a fair question you’re asking - I personally believe in a free Palestine and I am vocal in my personal life about that and have turned down professional work with companies who don’t share those values. However, yes- I’d be lying if I told you that I wasn’t enjoying how this has exposed the manner in which Ed operates and that I’ve never been a fan of him on a personal level and/or how he professionally conducts himself and often find the well cultivated and widely accepted public image that’s a juxtaposition of much of the reality, a bit annoying. I don’t think he expected his passiveness to expose him, his values, how he operates, in this way.

Sheeran has put more into this club than many people, including you and me, ever did. Are you accusing him of plagiarism? I presume not as I understand it he has never been convicted of it or copyright infringement in a criminal or civil court. If you believe and have evidence to the contrary, I’m sure the public media would be very interested. Take him on!! As for his music, it’s a matter of personal taste. It’s not for me, but I have seen him play live 14 years ago and he is good at what he does. For me it sits in the Taylor Swift unmemorable category, but however enraged you are, he is a highly successful a singer songwriter. Conceited? Have you met him? To say that I presume you have. What’s he like? As for his image, of course he has one. All artists do. In fact all people do. I doubt he’s ‘strong armed’ himself anywhere. If big organisations want him, that’s because it’s a business opportunity for them. It’s no difference to the buying of ITFC in 2021. They had never heard of the place but saw an opportunity in an area they were keen to exploit. Cowardly little gimp? Why don’t you seek him out and tell him to his face? He attends football matches sometimes. Give it a go. Or is it easier to bash that keyboard with spit flying fury? Who he chooses to have on his tour is his own affair. Personally, the guy who put him in this position shouldn’t have done it. If he was going to make a political statement he should have had the curtesy to ask Sheeran first. He literally put Sheeran in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t position. Of course Sheeran has his views. Don’t know the bloke, don’t wish to know or care whether is pro Palestinian, Israeli, Satanist, vegan or Romulan. Musicians should stick to music. There’s a way to avoid politics if you are a public person as Dolly Parton amply demonstrated. Same applies to footballers sticking to football, football club running to just that. There’s no place for politics in them. There’s enough room elsewhere in this world for that. In fact too much of it, not least because it gives the Trumps of this world the oxygen they crave.

Dolly was the quite literal antithesis to Sheeran, she didn’t want to hoard millions upon millions and went far and beyond the regular charitable affairs that are good for public relations but essentially tax benefits. A gem of a woman who stood up for what she believed in and had strong principles and values. [Post edited 15 Sep 10:16]
