| ULEZ bomber gets 15 years on 09:27 - Oct 3 by StokieBlue | I find it quite incredible how worked up some people have been about the ULEZ. Even posters on here who don't live in London and whom it won't affect were losing their minds about it and usually based on incorrect information. This story is just crazy. Imagine being that worked up about something that is saving lives. https://www.theguardian.com/en SB |
The 'protect women and children' crowd sure like to attach a lot of T's and C's to that statement.

It was the same over here in Wales with the introduction of the broader 20mph speed limit in built up areas. The right wingers were spitting feathers over it. In the first report after about 18 months, collisions were down 22.5%, casualties down 23.8% and deaths and serious injuries down 11%. Saving lives is apparently a bad thing for these weirdos. Yet I’m sure if you asked them if they’d like to reduce their chances of being involved in an accident by about 25% by doing almost nothing, they’d personally jump at the chance. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Weren't a lot of the 20 limits lifted after a while? Seem to remember it was presented by some as evidence that the 20mph limit needs to be reversed. Could be mis-remembering....

Pot-kettle-black. You were the one who looked up my past comments on entirely different thread to try and make a point out of context which made an assumption about myself and a dead friend.

There was tacit support for this fella at the time. It’s from people who don’t like London having a mayor called Khan.

| ULEZ bomber gets 15 years on 08:26 - Oct 3 by Ryorry | No one died though, and 15 years is what’s often handed out for murder. Yes he was reckless and stupid, but there was no intention to kill by him. I was amazed at the length of his sentence - maybe handed out as a deterrent to others? Am guessing his lawyers have suggested he appeals at the length of the jail term. [Post edited 3 Oct 8:35]

1) 15 years isn’t what is ‘often’ handed out for murder. The average MINIMUM term to serve for murder in this country is 50% higher than this at 22 years. 2) He detonated an explosive on a main road that was powerful enough to still be spraying scrapnel 100 metres away. Including hitting a child’s bedroom window. Had anyone been walking the other side of the road, they’d have likely been killed. The sentence absolutely fits the crime and I’d be staggered if it’s reduced.

Was there? I don’t remember that. A link would be interesting. I don’t see how anyone could support a disgraceful, life threatening act like that. I don’t like this mayor, but it has zilch to do with his name, his title or his wealth.

Some were, as the councils have the powers to overturn those which were proven to be unnecessary. We had one near us that was changed; it was a bit of an odd one for me as it was a narrow and busy residential road, but it’s a trunk road leading out of the city. The trunk roads tend to be the exempt ones. We’re crossing the outskirts of the city each day and haven’t noticed any change in journey times. The congestion and traffic lights mean you can’t average anywhere near 30 anyway.

I don’t bookmark churchman, but the sentiment that ulez was a fair target was thrown out there. I’m sure that’s very much the case for you, but it isn’t for everyone and I think you’ll be aware of that.
