You need your keeper to be having a worldie at the Ethiad to have any chance, but for all that hard work we are putting in as outfield players and managed to get back into game.

Both looked savable but Jesus that second, not good.

It is mental that people on here and the wider fan base consider him good enough for the Prem.

It’s a bit of a Sam Morsy situation from 2024 in regards to the fanbase. I don’t think we will get away with it over a season and if they’re out on Scherpen I hope they’re strongly looking at the loan market in January.

What is more concerning is that our manager considers him the first choice number one despite four keepers arriving here while he has been here. That side of our recruitment has been extremely poor and I think GON's comments were probably a back-track of what the plan actually was.

FWIW, I attach no blame to Walton. He didn't ask for this.

I would take that with a pinch of salt, no chance it’s true.

Walton has had a hand in as many goals conceded as scherpen yet everyone wanted walton in.

Teams concede goals, not just the keeper, until that’s understood by the wider support everyone will wrongly blame the keeper.

My that logic the position wouldn’t matter at all, he was clearly poor with the first half goals.

Though that's why some questioned the switch when it happened.

Can't believe he couldn't stop Erling Haaland 10 yards out, what a mug.

Agreed on the soft goals, and Man City's live "xG on target" figure is 0.80 for what that's worth (ours 0.85). But he did very well against Fulham and wasn't signed to be our PL keeper, so I'm loath to criticise him.

GoN said CW *was* intended to be our first choice GK this season, and Scherps was brought in with the intention of improving him to be first choice *in future*.

I find that worrying if true tbh - think we would have seriously underestimated the challenge of keeping in the PL; not learnt from 24/25. And all the more odd that we stuck Scherps in the firing line to begin with, undermining a future prospect's confidence when not intended to be our #1 this season.

Not just blaming Walton but putting in a shift against a top 3 side in the world is very very hard as an outfield player with their ball retention and movement. I want my keeper better for both.

Palmer is a better reaction keeper than CW as we saw at Villa and Chelsea last time but at the end if the day it comes down to recruitment in the position and it’s a key one.

Yes, but you only have to look at a team like Man Utd. The number of keepers they have had and the mistakes they have made. Probably their last good keeper was Schmeichel.
Over the years you can count on one hand the number of top class keepers who are consistent.
I love how pundits on radio and tv say things like "The keeper should have done better there" " He should have saved that" etc, etc. Yet they were central defenders and forwards with little or no idea of being between the sticks.
A keeper can make four or five brilliant saves, makes one mistake and he's no good. Yet a forward can miss half a dozen sitters and then put one away and he's a hero.

Brilliant servant for us in the EFL but it’s a key position for a promoted team and we’ve had a few cracks at it and messed it up, it’s more a comment on the recruitment than anything else.

Just don’t think he’s good enough at getting down, not always great positionally and has a bad habit of pushing into the danger area. Fine in the EFL (although clearly McKenna had his doubts with that as well) but not PL for me.

Fine if people disagree, I’d argue the club have told you enough times over the last years that they also don’t think he is.

The fact we signed Muric and Palmer shows Walton was not seen as the number 1 for prem.

He simply isn't. Doesn't make him a bad keeper, just not prem standard.

Second one was staying out then hit his other hand and went in. Unfortunate

Yep, well spotted, I wondered what happened in real time as it looked a bit odd. A replay confirmed it. Just unfortunate.

He did well to get a hand to it in the first place, two very unlucky bounces.

He's not perfect but he's not the reason we lost today, far from it.

Yeah TWTD is a bit insecure with any criticism but obviously he wouldn’t be starting anywhere else in the league and I think there were better keepers in the championship then him last year. He had a very strong defense in front of him and a lot of teams playing low block but there was some shaky performances down there as well against the likes of Sheffield United and Wrexham.

Is what it is, just hope it doesn’t cost us too much this year. Personally I think this will catch up with us and we will be in the loan market in Jan.

Thought today summed him up. 3 goals not necessarily clangers or his fault but all ones a better keeper has a chance of saving. He’s not a poor goalkeeper, just an average Championship one. It’s the area of the team where we are weakest and the obvious position where we need to upgrade unless Scherpen comes back in and shows why we signed him.

Tbf, I've not got an issue with Scherpen and was surprised he lost his spot.

But I really don't think for the second he could have done much more. Powerful header on the floor, he gets a strong glove to it and it bounces up, hitting his other hand at just the right angle to bounce backwards. It's just one of those things.

Think that's where Joes comment about better keeper comes into it. Potentially a better keeper palms that away from goal or directly over the bar. What is was doing again for walton until it hit his hand, was coming directly central into the area. That's one of his biggest flaws. Same with Palmer and 'that level' of goalkeeper, the best manage to do things others don't. You look at some of the saves Pickford pulls off, Martinez etc. No i don't think we could have signed them, but when you're in prem you need something close.

The other two goals, maybe a better keeper gets there but I genuinely think the second was just really bad luck.

I don't disagree with Joe's (or the other) comments.
