That tax dodging tosser Jim Ratcliffe came in and thought he could be Mr Football genius, and he's finding out that he isn't so smart after all.

He couldn't have had an easier job to be more popular, and do a better job, than the Glazers. It's incredible how badly it's turned out.

True story: Some mates of mine had a table booked at a very nice pub in the Scottish Highlands, where they regularly ate while on holiday. Ratcliffe turned up in his yacht and was ferried ashore, but was made to wait until they'd finished before he could get in.

I doubt Ashton would want to go there, given the state of the place, the people who would be over him and the likely much more limited freedom of action.

It's got to be one of the biggest jobs in football for a CEO. And Utd are in such a mess, they would need someone who can shake the entire club up and implement a vision. Those are things Ashton is good at, so he'd be well qualified. And politically I can't see anything being a problem.

Yes, he has a fantastic job at ITFC, the backing he has from the owners and he is a shareholder. If he was to be tempted, it would have to be on his terms with a huge amount of freedom to change things.

How popular football club owners are with the fans seems directly correlated with how successful the team is on the pitch. When that's going badly, suddenly all the other little things seem to matter.

In what way has he claimed to be a football genius that have caused Man Utds woes which can be traced back to at least when Moyes was manager if not directly as a result of the Glazer takeover

All Ineos/Ratcliffe have done is gone you know what guys & gals at Man Utd, stop wasting so much damn money on stuff that actually doesnt improve performances on the pitch, it might have made some staff happier, might have funded Fergie in his dotage, might have kept the bandwagon of deceased season ticket holders attending games, but every penny you spend or lose on stuff like that is a penny they cant spend on better players.

And somehow this is represented as the wrong way to run a football club, because how dare a non football person explain real world economics and finances.

On the subject of Sir Jim I really don't like that he's still able to call himself that. Seems to me that if you choose exile from the "realm", for tax reasons or otherwise, you should lose the titles associated with that realm too.

I have a much better solution. Stop awarding ancient feudal titles to rich businessmen who have donated to the right party, celebrities or washed up politicians.

However, I can't see him being given that freedom by the likes of Ratcliffe and his underlings. Or the (necessary) spending money by any of the ownership group.

Man U are behind only Spurs in net spend on players in the last 5 years. Hard to argue that their problems are down to lack of spending on players.

Not sure sailing is a great example - GB had never got to the final of the Americas Cup before his investment - however, what has happened since the last AC is no doubt less constructive

And how is this 'real world economics' approach panning out for him?

Weird that you pick a dispute against a point no one has made. No doubt there was a lot of fat to be trimmed off the books on the off pitch stuff, none of that changes the fact that he has overseen a disaster on the pitch. Both technical staff appointments and crucially the on pitch transfer business has been dreadful.

I wondered that too! I wasn't aware that, apart from being stupid rich, he was such a failure. Then I saw the link below and realised there is indeed a pattern. How much can be laid at Ratcliffe's door I've no idea, but it's an interesting read.
