We've had a great, solid start to this campaign... 17:06 - Oct 31 with 1277 viewstonybied

...I truly worry about how many goals were shipping though. A leaky defence does not make for comfortable survival! We really need to get a couple of clean sheets, for the confidence of the defence.

Solid defences win titles.

Scoring goals will keep us up. We are going at more than a point per game and you don't do that by grinding out draws all the way. I am very surprised that O'Neil hasn't had us more organised but I am delighted to see how much we are troubling Premier League defences. Only 2 sides have kept a clean sheet against us.

Not sure why you have been downvoted for this, a perfectly reasonable concern given that we have conceded the second-highest number of goals in the league

Yep, it’s a problem. Just seen replay of Hull’s first goal. That would be embarrassing at Under 6 game. Wtf was O’Shea waiting for?

I don't expect us to have a title winning defence. I do expect that we should have got at least one clean sheet on the board by now though. It's a concern, you can't rely on scoring every game. We will have a period where we don't score for. 2-3 games at some point. If we are not solid enough at the back this will lead to some confidence-sapping defeats, rather than some swash-buckling draws. It's not sustainable to concede 2 or more goals so often.

I agree it's a concern but I think it is how O'Neil wants us to play. Sometimes we look far too open and defending like today's then makes it look a disastrous approach. Would changing to a low block at half time have won us the game or would we now be bemoaning inviting Hull on to us and how we threw away the lead and lost?

Of course, improving the defence is something we want to do but that can come at a cost and currently, what we are doing is working to have us mid table. I would be a little cautious about what we change and how. It's like how many people were screaming for Scherpen to be dropped and now want him back in. All players become far better players in people's minds when they aren't playing.

There is a strong argument that winning 5 and losing 5 is massively better than grinding out 10 draws. GON is right.

But O shea, who I have never rated as highly as some do, was embarrassingly poor on that first goal. Schoolboy stuff.

O'Shea was loved because he wasn't Woolfenden, who got brickbats from many on here. I never saw much difference between the two - especially considering the amount we paid for O'Shea.

I know people will come back and point out Woolfenden has failed to establish himself at Coventry, but we didn't help in that scenario by holding on to him until the last minute, so their team has settled before he even joined. From memory, they thought they would be selling Bobby Thomas as well, which never materialised.

We lost control of the game for the last 7-8 minutes of the first half. We didn't gain that control back in the second half. It was pretty obvious that something needed to change fairly early in the second half, as hull were in the ascendancy for a prolonged period. I'm not saying we should change to a low block, but we need to concentrate on keeping our shape more in these periods.

And Woolfenden was probably the most disliked player/boo boy target out of our promotion squad, which helped his replacement get an easier ride. Now he's being exposed and not just today. He's been at fault for bad basic decision making in practically every game this season.

If we concede what we are pace to do over the entire season, we will go down.

I love the confidence but we won’t score 2-3 against a lot of teams that we haven’t played yet and some of these lower teams will be more streetwise second half of the season and a few will likely be more solid with new coaches.

Some of the confidence I have seen is verging on delusional and pointing towards Palacios and Enciso every week is not going to matter a jot if we defend like 10 year olds and lose the plot like we can do in the face of pressure. I know it is triggering on here to be concerned and highlight our shortcomings but those shortcomings exist and need to be addressed sharp.

Yes, we have got points on the board but this isn't 2024-25 with a couple of no-hopers taking bashings each week. Even Coventry are a couple of points behind us now and the margin for error is narrower than a rizla paper.

We have 29 games to get 29 points.

Don't think we need to over complicate it and keep on doing what we are doing and remain methodical.

Unlike last time we are not getting rolled over plus in January we can build the squad again.

We really need an experienced striker for 6 months, even if they are at the end of their career but has the pedigree to be able to change games and give Emmerson some knowledge and support.

Jury is out on Flemming, unless anyone else is seeing something I am not.

We only have to stay up, if that means finishing 17 by 1 point that will do us.

Howler from O'Shea yesterday but he's well ahead of Wolfy, who I also really liked.

Physically, he's much more up to the challenges.

Board Police Rule #1 Thou shou not criticise!

A very valid point and I have the same concern, the ease at which Hull tore us apart numerous times down our left yesterday was a big worry as is the fact we are one of only two teams yet to keep a clean sheet.

Scoring injury time winners and constantly coming from behind isn't a trend that is likely to get success in the long term either.

That said it has been a very good start but I fear by the end of November we are going to be sucked right into a scrap at the bottom. December will make or break our season, lots of games, crucial we get to at least 25 points if we are to stay up due to the likely second half of the season tail off that happens to most promoted sides.

Pathetic wasn't it. I'd have been screaming at my mate if he did that in a Sunday league game, to see it happen at Premier league level is utterly insane.

He's better but I think people exaggerate the difference between the two. And I'm not sure if he's good enough for this level - yesterday's howler is hardly a one off from him though perhaps is the most memorable.

Town have shipped soft goals for seasons now, not just this season. Take your pick ftom the following possible causes.

1)poor concentration levels throughout the team
2) poor midfield defensive cover for the back line
3) individual defender errors
4) poor / weak goal keeping.

Probably a combination of all of the above. But we need to sort this out because poor defending will see us relegated. Hull and Coventry aren't anything special. Far from it. But they generally can defend better than us. Sort out negative GD out and we'd probably be in the top half of the division. We have three in form sides to play now and we now must get points from these games or risk slipping down into the bottom three I fear.

I think that both Man U fans and ours would agree that our game against them was a bit of an aberration. I fully appreciate that it’s all ifs and buts, but if you take the Man U game out of the equation, our average goals conceded per game is 1.63. The average goals conceded for all the other teams in the bottom half is 1.56 per game, which obviously isn’t hugely out of step. However I do agree that we need to tighten up. We do look very vulnerable to the quick break, which oddly was something that KM’s teams were vulnerable to, but he did respond to that really well in our last promotion season. Let’s hope GON can do the same.

The answer is simple

The minute davis is halfway we have to pull a cm back into a dm role to cover the counter

Having davis. JP and Palacios as well as diop inside hulls half was just suicide. Eso as they had the ball!

It really isn’t. Football is a form of chaos. Nothing is completely predictable. If it were simple….well you know the answer. The error here was DOS not coming to the ball. No idea what he was thinking. It’s something oppo teams obviously work on. As we attack with Leif going forward, the striker automatically drifts over to their right. If play breaks down, they look for the ball over the top, where Leif would be. If we can delay the attack, Leif gets back. If not, a CM covers. It leaves us more exposed in the middle, but DOS should have come across. GON wants to play Leif in an advanced role, so we will get caught out. KM did the same, then tweaked his formation and we became more solid. We still scored plenty of goals, but didn’t look quite as swashbuckling, which is another reason why KM was such a great coach - tighten up at the back, still scored plenty goals. Hopefully GON can do something similar.
