What to do about Bournemouth... 06:18 - Nov 1 with 1304 viewsWolfieAtTheBack

I had this down as a nailed on 3 points a few weeks ago when they got battered by Chelsea but oh how things have changed.

They have won their last 6 games in the league and Europe and not conceded a goal!

If we can score against them that would be an achievement in itself, going to be a tough game which we will get a hard fought point.

Hope they are knackered from Thursday's visit to Prague for a start. Make sure we are in the game for at least an hour then hopefully our relative freshness gets us over the line.

We owe ourselves a win against Bournemouth after last time. A truly irritating result as we led for an hour up until the last few minutes, then conceded twice.

Good point, hopefully they are tired and emotional when they land in PR. Tough game. 1-1.

Same, that said, I prefer to face a side who haven't lost or drawn or conceded for so long as law of averages suggests this won't continue.

Going for a 1-1 draw in this one and a game similar to Forest.

A point here would be a good outcome.

1-1. Clarke in injury time.

There Is no such thing as a law of averages. Chance means that even if you spin heads six times in a row it is still a 50-50 chance of heads or tails on the next spin.

GON has a point to prove against his old side Bournemouth and taking in this week's European games, we could be lucky and catch them cold. They play on Thursday have a rest day on Friday and probably travel to Ipswich on the Saturday. Good for us.

We have an extra day plus no travel, could give us the edge fitness wise.

No game in the PL this early in the season would be a nailed on 3 points - very entitled.

Unfortunately a lot of Town fans assume a season is defined on the first 3 games. Even though those who are actually involved in the PL like managers, constantly explain clubs have new players, new managers, sometimes new systems etc and that can take a lot of games to implement a fully integrated system.

Last season was a classic example, I laughed when some fans wrote Villa off after 3 games, look where they finished.

B'mouth was always going to be a tough game, the important thing is to stop worrying about the opposition and play your game, to your strengths.

Given the fact in the last two decades we have been mostly rubbish until recently it is called being optimistic, not entitled.

A streak won't continue indefinitely therefore the law of averages is a thing.

Hell, I even get an upvote on here once in a while lol to prove this.

You're right about the coin but a not the right example re football. The Six heads in a row and the next spin is still 50-50, because a coin has no memory and nothing is ever 'due'. What people call the law of averages is really the law of large numbers, and all that says is the percentage evens out over thousands of spins. It doesn't nudge the next one back into line.

Where it gets misused is football. A match on Sunday isn't the same coin spun again. The opponent, the line-ups, home or away and how well each side is actually playing all change week to week. So nobody is ever 'due' a win, a goal or a clean sheet just because of what happened in the last few games.

But that cuts both ways. Unlike a coin, form does tell you something. A run of results is evidence about how good a side currently is, so it's fair to factor it in, as long as you remember four or five games is a small sample with a fair bit of luck mixed in.

Where you are right is the game against Bournemouth will still come down to how the two teams play on the day, not to any law of averages.

Sorry, data analytics pedant is in the house.

A bit like centrifugal "force". Scientifically and mathematically, it does not exist*. However, there is an effect which does pretty much the same thing.

* A centripetal (inward) force is applied to keep an object rotating around a central point. The centrigugal effect is merely unsecured items within the object conforming to Newton's First Law of Motion, by attempting to carry on in a straight line and coming to rest against the outer edge.

I'm not sure how you can ever have had Bournemouth as a nailed on 3 points. No such thing in this league especially against their squad.

But yes bang on about their form. You just worry about yourselves and preparing. I try and look at it as they have had a good run and runs come to an end. With their Europe travelling around we can be that team to end their run.

Man City are a good example of recent run ending and now having a right dip!

We can give anyone a game and it's on our turf so let's just see what we can do. Don't want to be giving them any extra respect.

Tell that to Luke Littler!

The difference between tossing a coin (a neutral, random* act) and sporting performance is that fatigue and lack of intensity (for a variety of reasons) both have a major impact on results.

And, as we saw yesterday, so does the referee.

Having to play on Thursday evening away in Eastern Europe, in an historically big match for their Club, could well have an impact on fitness, fatigue and intensity against us.

Just as having to wait for advert breaks, and not having to break a sweat for an hour and a half had taken the intensity out of Luke Littler's game when he threw against Fallon Sherrock.

* Studies have been done which show that variations in the weight of the relief portraits and wordings on different sides of the same coin can impact a "large numbers" run of tosses.

They beat a poor AC Milan with the help of a dodgy sending off and penalty double whammy. They beat the worst Man Utd team in living memory, Villa in the cup, Leeds and Sunderland who are anything but free scoring, and a team I've never heard of in Europe.

All of those bar Man Utd were at home.

Going by results alone I wouldn't worry too much, and I fully subscribe to the law of averages theory, they'll concede again before too long.

that's interesting. Centrifugal force is an apt name for the effect as that effect is certainly real. Anyone who has felt a whirlwind or seen a tornado would say so.

A point would look like a great result on paper, although that would then highlight the need to have got more out of Hull. A point a game including the likes of Hull won’t be enough. We need to get another win somewhere sharpish and I fear this one is going to be beyond us. But you never know…
